"Non-tune"? You're NOT serious. This is a terrific song with terrific melody and lyrics which she knocked out of the park!

I agree, the song is clever, entertaining, and the waltz feeling is right for a hard-working waitress who embraces her job. I'm a big Rita Moreno fan (who isn't?) but she's just not quite right for this. It needs more of a classic Broadway belt voice and more variety in vocal choices. Also, this tempo is just too slow - it's nearly 30 seconds longer than the original cast recording, and that takes away the "go/go/go, no time to waste" waitress feeling. Here's the original recording with the delightful Lenora Nemetz (for musical theatre trivia folks - there's an ironic connect to the casting -- Lenora was understudy to Chita Rivera in CHICAGO and THE RINK on Broadway ... and of course Chita Rivera was the original Anita in West Side Story, and Rita Moreno did the role in the film), ruclips.net/video/uWIGBiDY8VE/видео.html

I had the privilege of performing in the orchestra of a 1988 production of Working. "It's an Art" was, and still is, my favorite song from the show.

The designation of this great number (and performance) as a "non-tune" says far more about the poster's perceptions than it does about Mr. Schwartz's talent.

David N Agreed. A few of the lyrics are a bit much but musically, it's a real showstopper, a lost art.

Pretty snarky title - a non-song? It's a great song, and Rita serves it well.

I work at a University Chick-Fil-A, and depending on my mood, I find myself humming this, Millwork, or Delivery (which is the song I actually sang when I was in a production of this years ago)

My company just finished our production of WORKING. It's An Art was the craziest number in the show, there was parkour and flips. I guess it really is an art!

    1) It's a great song and well-performed.
    2) Why post a "non-tune"? Do you not enjoy it?
    3) I never realized...the waitress is an alcoholic!
    "I do get intoxicated..."
"I remember one day, as I do now and then, I had shakes...down I went."
I know a lot more about the restaurant business and alcoholism than I did 35 years ago when I first heard this song. It went right over my head at the time!

I just got cast in this role! I'm really psyched! I think Rita's subtlety is cool and effective but I'm hoping to be allowed to play it bigger and more theatrically. XD

It’s a great song and Moreno is wonderful as always! What ways this down is the total lack of choreography. When I staged it the gal danced all over the stage w her tray.

Agreed on Rita Moreno. Superb. I am confused by your opinion about the character. Are you suggesting that "putting on an act" in the face of poor working conditions will make life more joyful? For whom? Look again for Rita's dripping irony you might have missed. Studs, like Barbara Ehrenreich, marvels at how workers sanely cope with mistreatment. He certainly does not suggest that they should "know their place" in the social/economic order. The song is a call for reform, not for the status quo.

I've played this role twice and never once noticed that those were intended to rhyme. Pretty sure I always said "lee-zure" 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@jenniesantelerkruse2050 Yep, they are supposed to rhyme. :) "leh-zure or rest"

    • @Gary_Jaffe
      @Gary_Jaffe 11 месяцев назад

@@jenniesantelerkruse2050 Oh yes, it has to rhyme, each time the character sings “It’s an art, it’s an art, to be a fine waitress” the pleasure, treasure, leisure line follows. There are other triple rhymes that work nicely with the ¾ time signature (waltz): “steak in, take-in, bacon” and “they like, tray like, ballet-like” and “glow, pro, Michaelangelo.” Whoever musically directed and/or directed your productions should have been on top of that and guided you.
