  • Doug and Mindy came to see us in their MCI bus conversion while I’m in Alaska, and when they got here we discovered a problem with the fan clutch on their bus and a multi day repair sequence has begun - basically in the middle of nowhere as far as parts availability is concerned.

What a great demonstration of guys successfully problem solving with very limited resources. I found humor in noting two old guys (my age), recycling prescription drug bottles (to hold parts).

Glad I was "in the right place at the right time" to get those bearings on their way to you, Doug & Scott. Good luck with reassembly and testing!

Use fiberglass and cover the damaged area, and sand it down
    And spray paint them.
    Probably hold for yrs.

Looking forward to the final fix video. What a drag being so far away and to have such a unique problem! I always wondered if there were any serviceable parts in those fan assemblies (grease fittings, oil ports, etc.). Looks like the answer is no!

This is an odd one for sure. The electromagnetic clutch is a clever but proprietary design. The special spline nut has given us the most trouble. One supplier said a reman hub was $1600 and 12 weeks out if you can even believe they’d get it. Fortunately the bearings are standard and will arrive tomorrow or Saturday.

Great video! Well MCI has that part for $2500cdn if you want to replace, but I'd keep going with the new bearings and possibly leave off the electromagnet cooler ring. Not sure how much jbweld will do for allowing heat dissipation, might act more as an insulator...

Not sure if you saw the fix.. we ended up ditching that jbwelded oart completely.

Why are you under an aired up bus?

You know better Doug. Block that up. You saw what it can do to a driveway. You are not stronger than concrete buddy.
