Dark Ambient with the Roland SH-4d - such a fantastic synth!

  • Having the Roland SH-4d synth for a few days now, I quickly created a pattern for dark ambient sounds. Part 1 consists of a supersaw wave, a square wave, noise, and a saw wave. The supersaw would have even been enough to create creepy ambient sounds but I wanted to add flexibility, so I could play with the mix of wave forms. In this video I tweaked this part from desert winds to helicopter sounds, from creepy textures to phone rings.
Part 2 is added after about 3:40 minutes and is the Bell 02 preset from the SH-4d factory presets. Part 3 starts at about 5:00 minutes and is the Juno 106 factory preset Glow Pad. Part 4 is still free for further experimentation, and there is also no rhythm part in this recording.
No external FX. I used Chorus, Delay, and Reverb from the synth.
There is a lot more that can be done in the ambient area, but I love this synth already now.
    Recorded with Zoom LiveTrak L-12.
Disclaimer: I bought the synth from my own money. This video is not sponsored.

I would love to know what you’re doing here, in addition to what waves are selected. Like what envelopes and modulations are setup and what are you manipulating in real time to create each effect? Maybe a tutorial would help?

Thanks for your comment. Actually, I am currently learning this synth myself so I wouldn't feel prepared enough for makling a tutorial. For this video I used the wave forms with the factory values and changed only semitones. I also played a bit with the pulse width of the square wave. Most of the time I changed cutoff frequencies and resonance, distortion and the depth of the filter envelope. And of course the mix of the wave forms. Maybe this helps a bit.

I would love to see you play this with lights on. I want to see the buttons you’re using 💗

lol I looked up reviews, you can keep playing in the ambient lighting :)

@PurpleKoco To be honest, it was the first time that I tried this (bad) light. And I was (negatively) surprised that my HD camera (meanwhile more than 10 years old) did not make sharp pictures under these conditions. My smartphone camera is even better. But as you probably know know, I mostly tweaked the cutoff (high pass filter) and resonance plus the depth and drive of the filter section.

@@RainerMuenz technology surprises us with let downs all the time. I’ve done live production before and I’ve made the decision I want to make music. I want to use synths. I found you bc I watched some tools that Animal Collective uses and yours popped up 42 minutes old.
I dig the sounds and exploration.

@PurpleKoco Wow. I am almost always suprised what YT does. My videos does not appear where I think they should... on the other hand this brings me visitors that usually won't find me... ;-)
Have you already decided which synth(s) you want to use?
