- In today's viDEBO I'll be using my airbrush to paint a chartreuse sexy shad pattern on a lipless crankbait. I'll cover each step as I turn this crankbait from a blank lure into a colorful feesh catching machine! I'll also share the things that I've learned not to do when you start out with an airbrush. Scary good for a beginner. The scary part is you will only get better and you are already pretty good. Try a bluegill pattern for those of us that don’t see Shad in our waters.

This was a super interesting video, with all the great lures that are available in so many places, I kind of take for granted how much effort goes into all the hand painted, custom lures I buy at fishing expos. I fish, in part, to eat.. here in So Cal, this could get a guy or his kids killed.. someone threatened my 4 year old son over a calico bass I didn't want or intend to catch when I threw it in my bucket because it was bleeding heavily when I pulled it from the water.. sigh.. ah well

I've been painting my on cranks for awhile. Good job and some of the blanks off amazon are good. Some not so good. Also, check out lure parts online. Thy cost a little more but I like them and so do my customers. Debo' if you don't clear coat it the paint will come off the first time you use it.

Trying to get all caught up on your videos. Good start to painting brother. I would have left the flo-green out. When the blue overlaps the flo-yellow it'll give you the green stripe. Hopefully by the end of the day I'll be all caught up.

DEBO'S Fishing it’s like making creepy crawlers for adults and used for fishing. It’s very fun, stinky and a bit expensive to get started if you go with injection molds but I’ve only been going with a hand pour finess worm mold. Can’t wait to try em our in the spring.

Yeah, you'll be able to see the sparkling more on this after the clear coat. The pearl colors have glitter in them!

Yeah, I just fish and try to share the real experience. Not every day is filled with 10lbers. I'm going to keep practicing these and may sell them someday. I'll be giving some away soon as well!

Not bad at all. I found there is a market for custom painted baits around here. I'm not a professional lure painter but.... I can airbrush my ass off!!! I've painted guitars, gas tanks, skateboards, & even gun stocks. I can draw anything pretty well. Now when it comes to the winter months, fish turn a little pale. So when it comes to colors you have to be a little " light handed" with the application. But that's just an observation I learned 30+ years ago. Try a bluegill color

Debo, just a heads up the small threaded tip that the airbrush needle goes through is considered a delicate part and not covered under warranty. Fortunately I was able to use the tip of my exacto knife to spin out the broken threads and was able to get a new iwata tip from amazon for $15. So I'll be back in action!

Hey Debo, I love to airbrush model tanks and planes. I’ve tried to do it on 3D printed bait and it’s super fun but I still haven’t got it down but it’s fun having some practice with my models

Ive just recently started making my own jig skirts. I use the jig and living image skirt kits from skirts unlimited on tackle Warehouse and I use the BOSS brand jig heads which are also on TW. It is really fun and addicting

Great video I am wondering what it costs to get started? Do you plan to add a finishing clear coat to protect the paint from chipping. I painted old batter lures using nail polish and Hard as Nails clear coat. I also bought unpainted jigs and did the same thing. You might laugh but I even painted small fly poppers and spoons with different color sharpies and a bottle of compressed gas you use for removing dust from electronics. You just hold the tip of the bottled air on the point of the sharpie and it works like an airbrush. I bought a bunch of different colors of glitter and sprinkled on both spoons and lures while the clear nail polish was wet. Then I painted over the glitter using more clear coat. The cool thing is they looked good and they lasted better than I expected. With a good airbrush, you can do all kinds of things. You can even customize soft plastics. All those bargain lures that no one buys because of the odd colors are perfect for customized paint jobs. You really don’t have to incorporate a bunch of different colors unless you want to become a custom lure maker. Lots of super fish catching lures are often only a few colors. There are lures that catch anglers and lures that catch fish. I prefer the ones that catch fish. You don’t have to paint like Michelangelo to make lures that catch fish. We all know where most fishing lures end up and it is not in an Art Museum. Trees, stumps, rocks, weeds and God only knows what. That is no place for a perfect masterpiece, so why suffer the pain if you don’t have too.

@@DEBOSFishing It looks like it's a blast. I've thought about making and painting my own. This year I started making my own spinners for trout and this seems like the next step. If you haven't tried making spinners you can get wire pretty cheap and parts pretty cheap. With a airbrush you could make it any color pattern you want too.
Just an idea buddy instead of using wire mesh have you tried using lace iv used lace on other projects I fount it worked really well.

Looks like you are rocking some badger paints? Am I correct there? Have you considered a zenithal highlight then using some of their ghost tint line? You think that could create a bit of a feeshy transition? Just a thought. I honestly have no clue, but you sir appear to have an airbrush, cold weather, ice covered water and time... maybe give it a pull?
