    Great video, had to show it to my wife. One thing I think I would change is to screen off the drain and put a hose connection on it to redirect the water to the far side of the yard or even collect it for garden use. Great project April!

    A project upgrade that might be neat to consider: Wind mill driven mini water tower and a fountain or water fall into the pond.
    Maybe even adding a secondary pond off the outlet valve, and do a planted water filter section?

    You’re very thorough with all your planning considerations and it is much appreciated. Could you post a pic or video of the pool with the pups on it? Thanks in advance.

    I admire how it seems like you don't care what a project may entail, you simply learn how and then tackle all things you want in your home and life. You are a fantastic role model.
    Maybe describe your new property sometime. It looks very interesting - in the country. Maybe a fly over with a drone.

      That is exactly my approach. I don't care about how much work something involves. I figure out what I want, then do what it takes to make it happen. :)

    Oh my goodness April..... I JUST LOVE how AWESOME that turned out.. I'm planning a brick walkway for the front of my house, and I'm a little skeptical to tackle it, due to lack of experience with mortar, but seeing you do this... gives me hope!!! Once again you've done an incredible job!!! Your pups are SO proud to have you for their mama!!

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 лет назад +2

      I was very pleased with just how easy it was to use mortar and work with stone so definitely give it a try. Just think of it as gluing rocks together. Be liberal with the mortar and know that you can use tools to make it look nice and neat after you put your rocks into place.

    • @christinasimmons9809
      @christinasimmons9809 7 лет назад +2

    Wow, I like that! A fountain on top of that wall would be cool. Use Dawn dish detergent for mosquito control, it doesn't take but a little squirt. Fountain would help that too, moving water and mosquitoes don't mix.

    • @shutupsavannah2195
      @shutupsavannah2195 5 лет назад +4

      I don’t think dawn is a good idea, bc the dogs would still want to drink the water/ get some in their mouths while swimming

    I use a wet sponge when mortaring a rock wall to smooth the joints and clean the face of the stone.

  • @clydecessna737
    @clydecessna737 5 лет назад +1

    To get an attractive finish on the cement mortar between the rocks I was taught by Breton masons to over apply the cement initially; let the cement almost dry and then to brush it with a metal brush to the desired shape.

  • @cup_and_cone
    @cup_and_cone 7 лет назад +1

    Great idea! It got me thinking, the way you plumbed the drain, you could do two more PVC hook-ups (register and return) to add an external filtration system, which are very cheap these days because of above ground pools.
    Unfortunately the geology where I live is a swampy mud and sand base, with zero rocks. It would cost a small fortune to import all the rock I need. 😖

    I LOVE it!!! One drop of soap, any kind of liquid soap breaks the surface tension of the water and mosquitos will die. I use soap and water in a spay bottle to douse down even your lawn or anywhere it is muddy moist, if you have them there. Skin-so-soft is amazing for applying to dogs and horses and humans and mosquitos will absolutely HATE you...GREAT JOB!!! LOVE IT!!! I even LOVE the color of the bottom of the pool, once there is water in there it will be perfect!

    That's awesome. I feel you missed an oppertunity to also use it as a nice garden pond. It would have been really cool if you had incorporated a waterfall into the rear wall. And had some kind of solar circulation pump pulling water from the bottom and "powering" the waterfall. If you don't plan on using it all the time and leaving water in it, you may want to consider putting a recirculating pump in it anyway. I'm sure you know this but for those who don't, the moving water won't get so gross from algae or bugs.

  • @BronkBuilt

    I'm certainly not a pro, at all, but having built several koi and turtle ponds one tip would be to first lay pond liner down, then follow all the steps you did. Over time, this will develop cracks which will ultimately leak. With the pond liner behind all the rock and mortar cracks no longer matter as the liner would still hold the water in. You don't see the liner since it's covered by rock and mortar. This is a great idea for the dogs and I'm not sure if you guys are into it or not but should also attract all sorts of other wildlife.

    I miss riding my motorcycle out that way. When I lived inTexas, I rode about 25,000 miles a year, and drove my truck less than 2,000. Now I'm in Michigan and rode the bikes about 3,000 miles last year. Not happy making.
    I am glad I don't have to try and dig anything out your way. Some places it seems all there is is sod over bedrock.

    Hi! Greetings from Ukraine! Just in case you didn't know there is some plasticizer for concrete, which will make a work with stones/bricks much easier. In case you don't have it locally you can always add several drops of washing-up liquid (Fairy or whatever you have there in the US), that will do the trick as well.

    I'm a builder by trade muliti trade "Bricklayer/stone mason" but at advanced masters level. stone is naturally pourus to an extent it holds more water that it let passes. using a higher Portland concentrate mix also helps repel water penetration. if you consider more stone work fill your beds and select rock that are different is size don't cut on bed joints but try and keep perp joints to a maximum of half an inch also don't cut spill over or oosing mortar until it's relatively tacky this helps to point better. once pointed use a soft brush and go over joints to shine them👍 this prevents cracking and holes.

    I have always wanted to do something like this. Unfortunately, where I live, if I want a pond in the backyard, all I have to do is wait for it to rain really hard.

    I have 4 large dogs, one collie, one Shepard, and 2 Jindos, all rescues, and i am trying to build a pool just for them. have you ever looked into the natural pools?
