World leaders began arriving at President Emmanuel Macron's Élysée Palace office Friday afternoon ahead of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in the evening, a reminder that the Games, as well as a sporting spectacle, also come with a diplomatic dimension. But will geopolitical wrangling and global conflicts such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza overshadow the showpiece event? Douglas Herbert takes a look.
