      This was great, I been tryin to find out about "quail raising equipment" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (do a google search ) ? It is a good one off product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.

    When I started my Quail last spring they were on a starter feed then switched a Quail Grower crumb and I was surprised to learn that there isn't a layer or maintenance feed available here you just keep them on the grower crumb.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад +1

      +Dale Calder That's is surprising - yes we have a starter, grower/finisher, and a maintenance here in Oz. Having said that, the grower feed is fine to keep feeding breeding birds it's not going to hurt anything really and I only use the maintenance feed because it's available to be honest. If I could only get finisher (which does happen sometimes) I simply add a little crushed egg shell grit to the feed or throw it in the pen so the breeders get enough calcium in their diet...

    hii,
    by feeding them all feed from store, is it worth it ? you can feed chicken less by letting them to scratch in the lawn or compost for food.. that is one way to save some penny on chicken feed. but can you do the same to quail ?
    i didn't see them eat grass so far..

    • @rp101aquatics6
      @rp101aquatics6 5 лет назад

      So Andrew chickens make plenty waste the quails peck for bugs too and quail eggs have much more protein than chicken eggs and have more health benefits

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад +1

      +Graham R Dyer True, yes quail aren't for everyone and you need to have them separate to chickens or ducks in their own enclosure (or some use cages) which does make extra work. Cheers :)

    hey man. hope you can help me out about my problem. my quails are 2 weeks old and i ran out of feeds for them so i give them chicken feeds (concentrate) will this affect my quails? thanks

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 лет назад

      Chicken feed will do ok for awhile but quail generally need more protein than hens so I would supplement the chicken feed with sprouted seeds, worms, or soy meal to bump up the nutrients.

  • @ozarkmountaingirl8620
    @ozarkmountaingirl8620 8 лет назад

    I have A&M, only a few, I ended up with 3 roosters and 2 females. I had to separate one of the roosters as he became very aggressive actually hurting another male. I want a larger cage so this perhaps won't be so much an issue. I was wondering how that incubator is. Do you still think it is worthwhile? I was thinking even of buying one of those small 7 eggs things, just for the quail eggs. I wish spring was here and winter is just getting started here. sigh

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад

      +Ozark Mountain Girl Hi, yes I actually prefer the A&M and yes a larger enclosure with some obstacles around does significantly reduce fighting. Do you mean the small blue incubator? If so, it's going well and I'm planning to incubate some more quail eggs after Xmas. I've only had it less than a year so I can't speak for it's long term lasting qualities just yet but so far I do like its operation and the price! Thanks :)

  • @ruthwilliamson862
    @ruthwilliamson862 8 лет назад

    Just a quick question: do you know what the protein % is on that maintenance feed? We don't have that brand in my area, but we have other choices, and my quail are just reaching 8 weeks at this point, and I need to decide on the next step with their feed. Thanks!

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад

      +Ruth Williamson Hi Ruth, yes it's 15% but don't worry too much if you can't buy it because they will still do fine on a grower/finisher feed with a little grit/egg shell thrown in. Yes I do prefer using the maintenance feed but there have been times when I've only used the grower/finisher and my breeders still did well. Cheers :)

    Cool video 😆 I'm curious (sorry if it's obvious) you eat the eggs? do they just lay anywhere because they would otherwise lay in tall grass?

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад +3

      +Jess Chappell Hi Jess, yes the eggs make awesome hors d'oeuvre or snacks (chilli pickle is good). Generally though, I do prefer chicken eggs over quail because making an omelet is much easier with a few chook eggs instead of a dozen quail haha... Also, quail eggs have a slightly stronger taste than chicken eggs although they're not as "earthy" as duck eggs, but most people don't notice much difference in taste (I do). The reason they lay anywhere is due to their domestication over 6000 years ago since first kept by the ancient Egyptians they have lost the urge/knowledge to collect and incubate. Cheers :)

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад

      +sochy winzies You can buy feed for quail at feed produce stores in bulk they usually market it as Game Bird feed rather than calling it quail feed but it's not something every feed place will stock so it's best to go to a specific produce store that specialises in domestic animals feed and then if they don't stock it they usually will order it in for you. Cheers :)

  • @Sheila6325
    @Sheila6325 8 лет назад +3

    Cutest little things ever! How often do you have to fill the feeder? It looks like a nice size too. Great idea the cone! I've always wanted to keep quail, ever since I found out how many keep them, and seem to really like them. I had no idea how popular they were here in the States. I love chickens, but I'm thinking that quail may be a better choice for me. I can't do what I used to, (getting old) and they seem to be a little easier than chickens. Is that true or is it just the ones I have seen on RUclips? I'm not going to have that many, no matter what I choose, but I do hope to have some by this spring. Just can't decide on which ones. Can you also tell me how much room they need, and if they need the boxes to lay eggs in? I know chickens just not quail. Is there a huge difference? With winter coming in, I figured I have plenty of time to read up on them and try to decide long before I have to order them. I value your opinion, so let me know what you think. Bless, Sheila

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад +1

      +Sheila6325 This sized feeder gets refilled about each fortnight but it does depend on how many birds I have of course. Yes Sheila, they are easier to look after than chickens in my opinion because they can be kept in smaller areas, don't eat or drink as much, are easier to catch or handle. However, they do need different housing primarily a full enclosure with roof or a cage otherwise they will escape or get eaten! They don't normally lay in boxes and can lay anywhere, which does annoy some people and wherever you keep them I would allow at least 1 square foot per bird as far as space goes. Hope this helps, cheers :)

    • @Sheila6325
      @Sheila6325 8 лет назад +2

      Self Sufficient Me Oh wow Mark, that helps a great deal. Now I'm really excited! Running after chickens has been a worry for me, and although I'm sure I would have to run after the quail too, if their even the least bit easier, that is what I am looking for. It's also good to know they cost less too. I wouldn't mind the eggs laying around, in fact that would be good for me. I have the plans for housing, and it does include a full covered roof, however not much else. Well, now I can start some serious research on caring for quail. One square foot per bird is a lot better than I thought it would be too. Thank you so very much for the information, it's a true blessing for me, and God bless you for helping me. Sheila

    can you free range quail

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  8 лет назад +1

      Yes... to an extent... Because quail can fly pretty well and are small there are certain restrictions that prevent us from fully free ranging them such as predators and containment. However, keeping them in a large predator proof enclosure, which may even be large enough to grow grass or other plants could well be properly defined as free ranging simply due to the small size of the bird.
