Herbie is one of the greatest musicians of all time, but absolutely not because of his 'beast mode' moments. Because of his tone, sound, timing, groove, imagination, feel, overall musicality, openness, diversity, humor and sensibility.
I'd second that, Jim... He's always right there amazing us. Once I heard him and Wayne Shorter... we were all on a vacation in Mexico in a little Resort and there was a lounge with a Hammond Organ in it. Wayne didn't have his sax so he just whistled. But Herbie sat down and turned on the Hammond and just tore up.... it was just a fun impromptu with about 10 of us there to hear and still Herbie... cooked... even though he is not a Hammond player... still a keyboard.
You gotta have the players to play with for beast mode. Omar. Dave. John. Wayne. Jack. Brian. Stanley. I'm not surprised. Birds of a feather play together.
Herbie was at his best with THE quartet. Many bass players and drummers can vibe with Herbie, but you'll NEVER get that synergy with ANYONE else, that you'll get with him, Ron Carter and Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter.
@bernie's bootlegs & more ........i am not on your crack, but you should check nevertheless, someone might be on it, cause you look like they don't even ask you when they want it, they just slide in.
Great video! Personally I think that not only best Hancock solo but perhaps the best jazz piano solo of all time is Herbies solo on All of You, on Miles Davis live album "My funny valentine" '64. The way he builds up the solo, and breaks it down again, only to build it up yet again. superb. Hancock kind of reminds me of Beethoven. Neither are very known for heart melting beautiful melodies, like Mahler or Bill Evans, but what the way they use music is more focused on rythmics and harmoy. I actually didn't think of that comparisson untill just now! Quite fascinating actually
Thanks for the post, Bernie. Herbie IS a beast. But I believe that ultimately, any band is only as good a its drummer. I believe Herbie feel that way too.
Douglas Gorney I got to see him live last night and play for him at motor city wine in Detroit. James held a high C Sharp (circular breathing) for so long I thought I would die before he stopped.
Betty-Alexandria that sounds beyond awesome!! Wish I'd have been there. I've seen him two or three times and he always does something that leaves people shaking their heads with disbelief.
Betty-Alexandria Pride Haha! I was just thinking God speed to anyone trying to keep up with Herbie Hancock. That would also apply to James Carter. You must be amazing to even get the chance to play with any of these guys. What instrument to you play?
Number 4 is so great #4 - [7:04] - Dolphin Dance - Lugano / Supertrio in Concert" Recorded live at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Lugano, Switzerland, 1984 Thanks !
7? i'm guessing we could easily add another 6993.... to maybe make it an even 7,000... and I'm sure there would still be a lot more. But 7 is a start. Herbie is a Beast pretty much any time he plays. He gives it all...
I believe that #4 - the solo version of his exquisite classic 'Dolphin Dance', is from the 1983 Wold of Rhythm - Live in Lugano tour he did with Ron Carter and Billy Cobham.
shit this guy really kills it... I been on my jazz kick for a year and half now haven't even started listening to this guy yet. my earth science teacher showed me him one morning before I got into jazz I was just turned on by some obscure swedish jazz or Norway or whatever the hell but I was really only into Brubeck at the time. don't get me wrong but he just doesn't swing like these guys can. damn I missed this guy on the upper west side I was there the other night with my bro! we walked by the beacon theater it was over already. gotta catch him again when I move down there for college
I’m watching this in a nail salon waiting for my mother to get her nails done and laughing so hard that I started crying, thanks for making this bald experience enjoyable
Missing is concert solo on Solar with Metheny, Holland and DeJohnette - absolutely amazing solo - when he goes into beast mode, you can see Holland and Metheny just laugh in amazement
I like that u do these type of videos. Because there are so many vidoes of herbie and other great musicians. But these are hand picked selections that are great. Keep it up
Even if he's not my personal favourite (my personal favourite IS George Duke, upon whom Hancock is possibly the biggest influence) I kind of consider Herbie the objective GOAT jazz pianist... he's the Miles of piano, mastering and driving every new era of jazz - bebop, hard bop, post-bop, modal, fusion, right up till the present day. And you're not gonna tell me that Cantaloupe Island solo isn't one of the greatest keyboard solos ever put down. What a fucking lineup too, Shorter is just as much of a legend, Stanley's one of my favourite bassists and that drummer is monstrous!
Herbie is one of the greatest musicians of all time, but absolutely not because of his 'beast mode' moments. Because of his tone, sound, timing, groove, imagination, feel, overall musicality, openness, diversity, humor and sensibility.
Let's be honest...there may only be 7 times when he didn't go beast mode.

Thanks for the post, Bernie. Herbie IS a beast. But I believe that ultimately, any band is only as good a its drummer. I believe Herbie feel that way too.

Herbie propelled his band.
