C5 Corvette Exhaust Tip Upgrade (This was LONG overdue!)

  • The stock C5 Corvette Exhaust Tips are small and bland. The mufflers flow very well and aftermarket cat-backs are $1400 and up - so save a bunch of money and upgrade your exhaust tips for $96 and a few hours of time.

    I totally agree about the stock tips. When I got my 2000 Z51 coupe one of the 1st things I did was change the tips out for ones I got at one of the Corvette after market sites. They were still oval but much bigger in diameter. Made a BIG difference in appearance. I'm so glad that my 2003 Z06 tips are way better than the coupes tips were. Thanks for another great video.

    I had to have more noise but didn't want to risk drone. I went with Borla S Type II and X-pipe. No drone, sounds just right. But as you pointed out, not cheap. Impressive work on your tip mod. Looks great.

    Refreshing to see some thought put into an exhaust modification. So many guys go only for a sound, and use about as much thought as when I was a kid putting playing cards against my bicycle spokes.
    My used car came with a magniflow axle back system that I am pretty happy with. It has similar looking exhaust tips, but certainly didn't cost a hundred bucks. Comparative gas milage figures against other C5s seem to indicate it adds a bit over stock beyond just noise. The car was set up as a corvette shop's racer in stock Xcross class when the previous owner bought it out of the back room to use as his transportation back and forth to Vegas from SoCal before the clutch got noisy and I got a good deal. I figure a pro shop would have an unusually informed ability to select parts, so I figure the extra noise is a tolerable tradeoff.
    In the old ads around from when the car was new, Andy Granatelli said the system sounds," just right". ( this is the same Granatelli racing who put a jet engine into a corvette that my brother followed until it parked, where the driver told him that you drive that car around town with only the brake , you never need to touch the throttle. )
    Besides the axle back exhaust change, which the class allowed, it also had the early year wagon wheels rims, which don't flex as much as the correct 03 rims the car now has, a mix of Kumho tires, with a handling tread in front , a put down the power tread in back, similar to what Pirelli uses in some sports tire sets, and what seems to be the absolute minimum of screws necessary to hold the interior trim, although I can't truthfully say that mildly infuriating deal was intentional in a car that old. It's also lowered a bit .

    These videos are great! I’m hopefully picking up a 03 tomorrow that comes with both the stock and Z06 exhaust. I’m thinking of doing the bypass mod and this to the stock exhaust and leaving the Z06 one intact. Since the Z06 one is currently installed, can i do the tip install without the exhaust installed in the first place?

      Would likely be harder to be sure they are aligned if you don't have them on the car to measure and ensure they are where you want them before welding

    I just dropped off my stock exhaust to have the bypass welded in and new tips put. The shop said the 2.5 inch inlet was too big and to get a 1.75 inch one. How did you fill in the gap between the 1.75 inch pipe and 2.5” tip?

    I did something similar to my early C5 Corsa Touring or Sport system as the early Corsa tips were pathetically dated looking. The only thing I did differently is I used a longer 2x4 that spans all 4 tips at once making it even easier to insure level. Also got my tips from amazon in a black stainless steel. I never made a video on it as it is just to niche of a thing to do since I was starting out with the corsa mufflers. Your scenario I think has much more appeal to more people in the same boat.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  Год назад +1

      Thank you! The other big part is there is a myth out there that the stock mufflers are restrictive - which is false!! Companies have an interest in selling complete 1K+ cat back systems when in reality, only the mufflers really need an upgrade for performance. SOUND - is a totally different thing and subject to a vast variety of owner tastes!

      @@Toys4Life No doubt the c5 exhaust is one of the best flowing out there especially for it's generation. Now almost everything is great from the factory except for some of the early Ecoboost ford stuff for example. It would be fun to see you go to catless longtubes and see some before and after in the dyno department. At your power level I would be worried about the crappy gm cats. Mine had a destroyed drivers side cat at 26k miles on the stock engine let alone with a blower forcing the issue.

      Also running the Bassani X pipe. Great functional piece. I was lucky enough to get it for free from my original dyno guy. He gave it to me because he said my car sounded like shit with the cam I was running and the original open H pipe. IT had this weird terrible farty fluttery noise at idle. It really did sound bad. Normally I like the sound of an H pipe over an X but in this case the X is a thousand times better.

      Check out my videos on the C5 exhaust mod bypass for non ZO6 cars. They have a titanium exhaust which takes specialty welding. Inexpensive and makes it a little bit louder when you're on the throttle. Not much difference driving down the road normal. If money is no object, go with a corsa sport system.

    I would say the corsas are worth the high dollar, but always good to keep an eye out for a used pair, I picked up the corsa sports with the quad center tips for about 820 used vs 2000 with tax new. The reason they are expensive is because they do not drone, even catless headers to corsas they will still cancel all drone, and second they arguably give the c5 and all other corvettes the best sound I’ve ever heard. Just my 2 cents
