If my food fall on a not too dirty ground, I eat it, I don't wash my hands every single time I touch something dirty/pets, I walk barefoot and guess what ? It's been almost 8 years since i've been sick and I think it's cause my immune system is well trained.
+Greg Scott While I also think that my joke didnt provide any further content to this video, and others would deserve to be the top comments for their educational values, I dont think that a joke making propably a hundred people laugh and therefore increase the memorability of the main information by connecting it to a positive emotion is a bad comment overall. Since being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and possibly severe case of it, I've had skin rashes that would only heal with use of steroids. After becoming majorly depressed I moved home and haven't gone out pretty much at all, but in my depression I slowed my washing schedule down greatly. Suddenly I noticed that reducing my number of showers(used to be daily) my skin has been able to heal better.
You can put lots of herbs in your home; eating/drinking the tea of the herbs prevent cancer, depression, allergies, the leaves eat dust from the air, you can bury food scraps inside the potting soil to make more soil which after a while will go into the air helping your immune system.
My brother is too clean... Every time someone touches his Bed/Toothbrush/Laptop/ANYTHING He uses his hand and continues to pat it for hours and cries... Please pray for him to get better... please. I can't live with this.
We don't need more pollution, we just need to be a little less sterile, after all we only want to give out immune systems some exorcise, not overwhelm them.
+PlasmaMongoose Not so much exercise, as it is teaching the immune system what's good and what needs to be attacked. Immunity stays with you forever (unless its a highly variable germ like Flu), and you usually don't get infected by the same thing twice. Anti-body immunity is our main line battle tanks, whereas Macrophages are the clean up infantry that go in after the main fireworks go off.
It should be noted that it's not only hot water which removes the sebum, soap does the same thing, and both deplete the good bacteria which take 24 hours to rebuild their population. Shower with cool water, i.e. body temperature or lower, and only use soap daily on 3 areas--underarms, groin, and the gluteal fold (and maybe feet). Other than that, water pressure and manual agitation will remove the days' accumulation of bacterial waste products (which is what actually causes odor) and dried perspiration, and that only takes about five minutes. Use soap on your whole body only when needed, generally about once a week.
IMO, most of our modern hygiene habits are all due just to product marketing. You see toothbrushes with a kilo of toothpaste on TV, but you need just a 1/10 of that to effectively clean your teeth. And Im not even going to mention how the shampoo industry has made women use like 19 different products to wash their hairs. Or anti-bacterial soaps which make kids get sick with higher frecuency because they kill all the bacteria which would be used to train their inmune systems, etc. Please stop watching TV guys, read and watch youtube instead (:
Thank you! I've always been annoyed by germaphobes (like my dad), who constantly wash themselves and use antibacterial soaps. The only times I am wary of germs is when I handle raw meats or gross rotten foods etc. My immune system is fantastic, and I have very few problems with allergies...
So what I deduced from this is that my shower every three day schedule and habit of only wiping my important areas and washing my hair is actually good for me and not gross...Nice! xD
I grew up running bare footed, playing with dirt, and having many pets throughout my life. I have hay fever and intense allergies to many things, including cats and dogs. Bad luck for me, I guess.
When I worked in an assisted living facility they only used anti bacterial soap. We were required to wash our hands constantly. Well I got a rash on my hands and arms due to the anti bacterial soap. Of course it had Triclosan in it. My hands and arms got to be so bad that I had to buy just regular soap to use. I couldn't use hand sanitizer either. I noticed a lot of coworkers calling in and having antibiotic resistant infections. Now that I don't work I refuse to be too clean. I think that the more bacteria and viruses we expose ourselves too, the better. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a sky high immune system so that if we ate some food containing bad bacteria and didn't get sick at all? And we were able to be exposed to Ebola and hepatitis and our immune systems would be able to just fight them off and we wouldn't get sick? And we didn't have to get vaccinated against anything because our immune system fought everything off? I believe that it's highly likely. You know how anti bacterial soap creates super bugs that are resistant to antibiotics? Well I think that we should create an all natural environment that is super resistant to bugs and have super immunity to all bad bacteria and viruses so we'd never get sick. We can make it a reality.
I know someone who grew up on a farm shoveling hog manure. He suffered badly from allergies. I grew up in the city and never have had allergies. However, one of my older brothers has allergies.
You said it's anecdotal, not fact that you're less likely to be ill than a lot of folks who didn't play in the dirt. A dear friend told me, after I had my first child, "Every kids going to eat a pound of dirt." Now that country wisdom that seems to have a balance in fact. I ran around in bare feet, I played in dirt and as a child, I had major asthma and many infections, mostly upper respiratory. As an adult, I rarely get sick, but still have to deal with allergens and mild asthma, so maybe I played in the wrong dirt. ;) Anyway, love the series.
so for those who take it too literally, the subject of antibacteria is meant to understand that anti-B soaps and scrubs should be repeatedly used in place of basic soaps and should not be reapeadedly used. Antibacteria is something to treat areas that need foreign material removed or wounds before treatment.
+camron reynosa no, you don't want to use antibacterial soaps for when you just want to remove foreign material. Normal soap is what does that, and it's just the normal soap components and not the antibacterial components that make antibacterial soap clean foreign materials from your skin.
+Aj Goff im sorry, if you look at my sentance the first half "anti-b soaps and scrubs should be-" should was supposed to say "shouldnt" i was half asleep and had such a brainfart that the second point i made that you were refering to, i couldnt think clearly on a way to word what i meant. The instance i was trying to refer to is when handling bottly fluids as hospitals have to, or service stores like resturaunts when cleaning human blood from wounds from kitchen work, or cleaning vomit from those who vomit at theme parks or any other situation. there certainly are times where the potential of high consecration bacteria needs to be dealth with where the means to shower or simply wash hands is not enough.
I've been using that showering method he talked about since High School when I was sooooo tired from being woken up before sunrise for school that I would just sit in the shower for 10 min and then wash my hair. Since then though, I think it's clearly better and more hygienic.
John Doe not all the oil, there is a very obviously distinct difference in how your skin feels when you lather your skin with soap as opposed to just running it under water.
i think this hypothesis is true, i have evidence from my cousin beacause my aunt always overprotected him since he was born, she used to boil the all water that he will drink, he was not able to drink non boiled water until he was like 9 years old and also their house is always extremely clean. So now he is 15 and he is always sick. Meanwhile my neighboor has been really careless with her kids since they were born and those kids are always barefoot walking on the streets and they never get sick
This is an important topic to some extent I agree with you ! well showering once Daily or every two days is fine I grew up as a child playing bare-footed outside yet I still got Sickness but it didn't come from Being less Hygienic or not .. I actually got it from food .. much of our food is injected with all these chemical substances making them last longer or look better or taste better ! but people do not realize that these food are harmful until they take a slap on the face ! like me ... I was once super addicted to Carbonated drinks then I got poisoned and caught a chronic disease so I decided to permenantly stop these drinks so I switched to coffee and tea then i found out that coffee can also Cause the same sickness i have so now i still drink hot drinks like Chamomile and green tea but you need to learn to keep a balance the same thing applies to hygiene you've got to keep a balance ! so that's what i try to do now

So I haven't gotten sick in over a year and I had a water bottle that I didn't wash for over a year also. One day I was about to clean it, and I saw an earwig crawl out of it and bug guts. I think the fact that I didn't wash it could of possibly built up my immune system. Coincidence or not?
I wish I had a dirtier childhood. We would run outside, barefoot with the dogs and all that, but it was always followed by a good daily scrubbing. These days I am less worried about always being "clean". My kitchen is spotless, I wash my hands when preparing food and I will pay extra attention to any sores or scratches so they don't get infected, but I generally only bath 3-4 times a week and these usually coincide with my workout days. Even then its mostly just the important bits that I clean. I also walk barefoot whenever its socially acceptable :P Disgusting? Maybe, Maybe not. I don't care. No one has said I smell which would be my only concern. The only difference I notice is that my knees and elbows are less dry and cracked, which may be related to less cleaning. I get sick less often but I really don't know that is due to the cleaning change since I have made other changes in my life.
***** My friends would tell me. And my close friend has a very sensitive nose and would definitely tell me. So if you are trying to make me worry I don't :P move a long now
***** Yes every single person in my life smells or doesn't have the balls to tell me I stink. Every Single One Damn the world is a terribly smelly and spineless place. Get over yourself. Things can be different then what the media tells you.
Zastavan Well the media tells you you need to shower every day. Buy all that soap and deo and deep pore cleanser or whatever. Even if you are not dirty. And actually I just back from the shops now after stinking up the place. Having dinner so all done for the day, but I will be sure to stand super close to people tomorrow through. Hope to see you in a nice long queue some day ;)
If hot showers are bad for the skin, how about hot, long baths? Like in Japan where they have a bathing culture, whether it's public bath houses or traditional hot springs, baths seem to have a super long history. Some hot springs are even advertised to have health benefits and rejuvenating effects on skin and the body in general. Most of it has to be just another marketing ploy, but those natural hot springs with minerals and sulfur and stuff, are they at all good for the skin or overall health? Also, in bath houses, you've got all these baths, and among them are the cold bath and the super hot baths. Some people do this thing where they soak in one, then immediately soak in the other, experiencing a huge jump in temperature. I've heard it can dangerous, but I've tried it, and the tingling sensation is actually rather pleasant once I get my body used to the different baths. I've heard that it might cause shock or stress to the heart or something?... Is it really that bad?... And how about spending hours bathing. Would that be a very bad thing? I usually can't stand it for too long, but when I go to hot springs or bath houses, I wish I could stay in longer, because I find it pleasant and relaxing. Especially seeing those old ladies who seem to spend a good part of the day in the bath, I'm kinda impressed by their bathing rituals. I don't go a lot, but it's one of the things I really like about Japanese culture, but is it bad for the skin to do that too much? Does it strip the skin of too much oil? Are Japanese people just better at soaking?
i was a c-section baby and my immune system sucks :( but it seems to have improved since I've become more physically active and have been working with kids!
Because Trace is talking about something interesting. I can put an entire class to sleep in ten minutes by talking about the Fourier Transform and Laplace Transform.
One big problem is diet, you should stop eating meat, fish, dairy, oils. If you have a high protein high fat diet your skin will produce too many oils and sweat and your body will just be too smelly. A mostly vegan low protein low fat diet is what your body is designed for and results in much healthier skin and much less acne where you don't need soap. And the dishes in the kitchen become so much easier to wash where you don't need dish soap anymore. As far as clothing detergent, you should just use less for sure and try the more natural detergents but once your body produces less BO then the casual wash really needs very little detergent. The diet really matters.
Some times go more than a week without showering though I'll normally clean my bits with baby wipes daily and I'm a bit OCD about cleaning my hands and use alcohol gel I know I shouldn't but I get it for free and cleaning my hands 20+ times a day for no real reason is a bit nuts .
i used to play in dirt piles skin my knee and dirt would get in it etc etc and as an adult I never get sick like ever and I see people going round coughing and sneezing spreading disease and sickness and I never catch it
no mate, anti-b soap kills the unfit (weak) bacteria so there will be no weak bacteria left to reproduce. Hence why only the fit (strong (fit genes)) bacteria will survive and reproduce. Their DNA will be past on and one of those bacteria might contain a mutated gene to be resistent against anti-b soap.
As soon as I have the funds for it, I'm going to start using AO+ I've stopped using shampoo I don't use deoderant I only use minimal amount of soap for my armpits I'm also adjusting to cold showers and will eventually stop taking warm showers
I use Castile Soap on my whole body. I use dilute apple cider vinegar as conditioner and im taking luke warm baths. Its great to see someone else doing the same
i'm kinda embarresed to ask. but brian says 'good bacteria is' instead of 'are'. now i know i'm wrong for feeling like are would be right because tt is a proffesional show and brian is really bright. but can someone explain to me why 'is' is sometimes used for a plural word like 'bacteria'. thanks
The presenter keeps using "theory" and "hypothesis" interchangeably, but they aren't, there's an important distinction in science. A theory is well-tested and established, from what I can tell he's talking about a hypothesis.
Does hygiene really increase lifespan that much ? I mean, the fact that we have a lifespan that is more than 40 years old is mostly due to the decrease of infantile mortality. So does having a good hygiene really does matter in the increase of our lifespan ?
So basically we are directly helping Bacteria progress faster than it normally would? Isn't that breaking the Prime Directive? "You shouldn't interact with underdeveloped worlds or lifeforms as this might alter their path of development" We are forcing Underdeveloped bacteria become more powerful developed bacteria.
@testtube plus: when you say "It's a hygiene hypothesis; it's basically a theory" changes the definition incorrectly. It's not the hygiene theory like germ theory or something established by enough evidence.
Please don't misuse hypothesis, theory, and fact. That is one of the worst hurdles for people properly understanding science. "It's not a fact, it is just a theory," is an incorrect way to state something is unknown or not settled. A Theory is an explanation of not only what is happening, but how it is happening that is backed up by all applicable data. A hypothesis is an idea about what is happening, and/or why, that has not yet been proven. It is what guides the development of analysis techniques to find out if it is correct. If enough evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, it becomes a theory or a law and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon. The difference between a theory and a law is that a law only describes what will happen given certain set variables, without any explanation as to why that may be the case; whereas a theory also explains a bit as to why it happens. Newton's laws of gravity (only actually correct in very specific applications) explain how gravity works in the sense that we experience it (an apple falls to the ground with a certain acceleration that is due to comparative mass and distance to/from the earth, coming out to roughly 9.8m/s^2), whereas Einstein's theories on relativity (both general and special) add up to (among other things) explain how gravity actually is a function of the warping of space time, between objects, and therefore also has other considerations, such as relative velocity, to consider. For all practical purposes, to the extent that we are able to analyze them, theories and laws are about as factually proven as science can allow. If they are shown false by new information, they discontinue being theories and laws, and are eventually replaced by new hypothesis that account for the new information, that are then tested until they are either replaced themselves or they become new theories or laws.
A hypothesis is either a suggested explanation for an observable phenomenon, or a reasoned prediction of a possible causal correlation among multiple phenomena. In science, a theory is a tested, well-substantiated, unifying explanation for a set of verified, proven factors. A theory is always backed by evidence; a hypothesis is only a suggested possible outcome, and is testable and falsifiable.
If she doesn't work in healthcare, have you guys considered taking her to see a psychiatrist? Washing your hands to that point is many times a sign of OCD.
Verbux It's not a clear insight into anything, but something's usually wrong if someone's washing their hands to the point of pain.Pain typically makes people adverse to whatever caused the pain.
I was referring to my own psychology. Also, I don't believe diagnosis helps people and considering this has only happened on a few occasions we chillin'
So fucking true. Weird story but when I went to India, I began to puke and my body could not tolerate the bacteria. BUT, later I felt even healthier and better after my body adapted to the bacteria.
I KNEW IT! MY MOM TAKES A SHOWER EVERYDAY AND I DO IT EVERY 9 DAYS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT, I knew there was something fishy going on, wash, scrub, cover every area of your body with itchy body wash, i'll never shower again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Gabriel Smythurst OMG 9 fucking days ? that's over a week I can't stay one day without a shower I immediately feel dirty and my body n hair gets itchy esp if I go outside
Now you're just being too much and ironic showers don't damage ur skin .. maybe long baths do or over showering .. but bacteria builds up on the body way too fast esp in the ears and mouth .. that's why Muslims do Ablution 5 times a day and I don't care if u are an anarchist but you see ? even ancient folks used to clean up more often but I agree doing Excessive obsessed cleaning could be bad
I was a filthy child oh god. My parents had to bribe me with pizza to shower and the soles of my feet would get black and I'd be kinda proud of it ngl. Also, grew up with a lot of cats and dogs. And I rarely get sick and have no allergies.

The only difference I notice is that my knees and elbows are less dry and cracked, which may be related to less cleaning. I get sick less often but I really don't know that is due to the cleaning change since I have made other changes in my life.
Oh nice
***** My friends would tell me. And my close friend has a very sensitive nose and would definitely tell me.
So if you are trying to make me worry I don't :P move a long now
***** Yes every single person in my life smells or doesn't have the balls to tell me I stink.
Every
Single
One
Damn the world is a terribly smelly and spineless place.
Hope to see you in a nice long queue some day ;)
To get clean the ancient Greeks would coat themselves in oil then scrape everything off with a bent metal or wooden implement know as a strigil
I think a series (or episode) about the psychology of athletes and why sports are so popular would be interesting
Why hasn't this channel got more subscribers?
Why is there only a iTunes version. Not everyone has an iPhone. Please make it available on SoundCloud too
'...more polluted areas of germ-any' ='''D
I love you Trace! honestly you're the greatest
Gay
i was a c-section baby and my immune system sucks :( but it seems to have improved since I've become more physically active and have been working with kids!
Watching this in the bathtub, I was just washing my face and he said "We should stop scrubbing them away."
+luke Fugate XD *whispers* let them grow to protect you
Why can't you be my teacher? I am never more engaged than when Trace is talking.
Because Trace is talking about something interesting. I can put an entire class to sleep in ten minutes by talking about the Fourier Transform and Laplace Transform.
when I was young I drank ditch and run off water, I lived, haven't gotten sick in 3 years.
Wow
Wat
I still like sulphurous well water better than the bottled stuff. It's what I grew up on, tastes better to me.
Tracy darling, that Hy Giene! joke.... so bad, srsly, so bad! Great video!
Some times go more than a week without showering though I'll normally clean my bits with baby wipes daily and I'm a bit OCD about cleaning my hands and use alcohol gel I know I shouldn't but I get it for free and cleaning my hands 20+ times a day for no real reason is a bit nuts .
I really enjoyed this video! There are so many things that I believed that is proven wrong in this video. Thanks DNews!
i used to play in dirt piles skin my knee and dirt would get in it etc etc and as an adult I never get sick like ever and I see people going round coughing and sneezing spreading disease and sickness and I never catch it
One time I drank water that had plants in it(probably algae), and it tastes really bad, but at least nothing bad really happened to me.
Could the opposite of the anti-bacterial soap be done?
Like help very weak bacteria reproduce?
no mate, anti-b soap kills the unfit (weak) bacteria so there will be no weak bacteria left to reproduce. Hence why only the fit (strong (fit genes)) bacteria will survive and reproduce. Their DNA will be past on and one of those bacteria might contain a mutated gene to be resistent against anti-b soap.
I feel like this would be a lot more dynamic with two people.
Isn't there a link between hygiene and intelligence something to do with the immune system and neural connections iirc
As soon as I have the funds for it, I'm going to start using AO+
I've stopped using shampoo
I don't use deoderant
I only use minimal amount of soap for my armpits
I'm also adjusting to cold showers and will eventually stop taking warm showers
I use Castile Soap on my whole body. I use dilute apple cider vinegar as conditioner and im taking luke warm baths.
Its great to see someone else doing the same
i'm kinda embarresed to ask. but brian says 'good bacteria is' instead of 'are'. now i know i'm wrong for feeling like are would be right because tt is a proffesional show and brian is really bright. but can someone explain to me why 'is' is sometimes used for a plural word like 'bacteria'. thanks
That can't be true! I need antibacterial soap, normal soap never works for me even though I wash my hands for two minutes.
Then use some Gojo, that shit works on everything, all without the extra crap.
hygiene hypothesis creator called Doctor Scratch'n. lol
Brb gonna go play in the mud like I always wanted to keep doing.
I dont clean too much my room hehe
great video!!informational
Is it possible for you to add your podcasts to Spotify as well?
Nosocomial infections... Scary shit!!
a very interesting topic
The presenter keeps using "theory" and "hypothesis" interchangeably, but they aren't, there's an important distinction in science. A theory is well-tested and established, from what I can tell he's talking about a hypothesis.
Does hygiene really increase lifespan that much ? I mean, the fact that we have a lifespan that is more than 40 years old is mostly due to the decrease of infantile mortality. So does having a good hygiene really does matter in the increase of our lifespan ?
I only wash the important parts with olive oil in shower
and my family thought I was just stupid BUT I WAS RIGHT not being clean makes you clean..... I haven't showed in two weeks.
Over brushing your teeth can take off the enamel but not brushing enough will rot them as well and is very grosse and bad for your social life :)!
So basically we are directly helping Bacteria progress faster than it normally would?
Isn't that breaking the Prime Directive? "You shouldn't interact with underdeveloped worlds or lifeforms as this might alter their path of development"
We are forcing Underdeveloped bacteria become more powerful developed bacteria.
@testtube plus: when you say "It's a hygiene hypothesis; it's basically a theory" changes the definition incorrectly. It's not the hygiene theory like germ theory or something established by enough evidence.
Some dirt don't wash off just because you soap and water your body.
I'm not sure how much credibility someone has who says "it's just a theory"
Very true
Thank you! This is why evolution also is not taken as fact, because theory is taken as just an idea.
What's the difference between a theorie and a hypothosis?
A hypothesis is either a suggested explanation for an observable phenomenon, or a reasoned prediction of a possible causal correlation among multiple phenomena. In science, a theory is a tested, well-substantiated, unifying explanation for a set of verified, proven factors. A theory is always backed by evidence; a hypothesis is only a suggested possible outcome, and is testable and falsifiable.
how many times you will add intro end it
Bacteria don't "breed", they just split apart when it's time for them to multiply. There are no male and female bacteria.
pls talk about acne
When I was a kid I ate dog shit... twice.
That was good ?
+xLurycz lol
I'm making a year abroad in Thailand right now and I have to shower 2-3 Times a day😭😣 at least we don't have any warm water😂
Like George Carlin said: We never got sick, because we *swam in raw sewage!*
Amen, I'd like your comment but I'm on a smart phone (love him)
Belly button bacteria? Seems to me to create a holding area for bacteria. Is it good or bad? And why does it stink!
Yes it is.
Well my sister cleans her hands so much that they sometimes blister.
Guess I'll have to break the news to her..
If she doesn't work in healthcare, have you guys considered taking her to see a psychiatrist? Washing your hands to that point is many times a sign of OCD.
+Verbux Take her and yourself for that comment to a psychiatrist.
You believe that a comment gives a clear insight into somebodies psychology?
Verbux It's not a clear insight into anything, but something's usually wrong if someone's washing their hands to the point of pain.Pain typically makes people adverse to whatever caused the pain.
I was referring to my own psychology. Also, I don't believe diagnosis helps people and considering this has only happened on a few occasions we chillin'
So fucking true. Weird story but when I went to India, I began to puke and my body could not tolerate the bacteria. BUT, later I felt even healthier and better after my body adapted to the bacteria.
keep scrubbin clean and drink some Yakult or Actimels
I use to drink my pee when I was 7...yeahhh.But hey at least I never got sick even though I wished I was because I have school!
Hi Jean!!!!
I will get jock itch if if I go 2 days without bathing!!!
if there is kim suk yung then im pretty sure there are jean's out there.
I really love you but if it's possible please put the script below your camera to give the illusion that you're talking to us
halo

picking your nose?
Gay
+Devin Basden Totally harmless, and potentially helpful to strengthen your immune system. But also totally gross to everyone else.
+Punching Guy fat
+Devin Basden In the privacy of your home ;D
+Adam Daniel I don't think cows would like you
I wonder if there was other harm done to the lungs of the german children
What if we use a UV lamp after washing our hands wouldn't that be effective in killing nearly everything
Muh cancer
I was a filthy child oh god. My parents had to bribe me with pizza to shower and the soles of my feet would get black and I'd be kinda proud of it ngl. Also, grew up with a lot of cats and dogs. And I rarely get sick and have no allergies.
