Ah. I see Jon has officially graduated from skepticism to paranoia. Yay.

I know Jon does actually care about him and all his assistants, but I feel like Martin’s kindness has got to be recognized more!!
I think Jon cares deeply about Martin and the other assistants, else he wouldn't have had Martin stay at the archive after the attack on him. He just doesn't like showing it openly.

The geologist in me got excited about the "warped stone" because it sounds like phyllite (which photographs just cannot do justice - it's SO weird in person) before coming back to my senses and realizing that it was supposed to be creepy and supernatural, not a specific type of real rock xD
You never know mate, all the historical characters are real, the archiving is correct, maybe the geology is too
is there anything specific about phyllite usages? is it uncommon to be built with?
@@TheJuliana0901 I genuinely have no idea. My overwhelming urge to give Jon a hug is growing exponentially with each episode. Martin please hug this man for us
ALSO the fact that he didn't erase his chalk coming back is giving me so much anxiety like THINGS CAN FOLLOW THOSE. THINGS CAN FOLLOW THOSE AND BREAK YOUR FLIMSY LOCK. NO.
@cak01vej well, I'm not sure he would have time to collect all the rope while running in panic... Though, simply cutting it and leaving would probably the same level of bad as leaving drawn arrows...
@cak01vej to be fair, he probably didn't know where to get that much thread + drawing arrows is easier to follow in a panic than having to pick up the thread and trying not to fall over it. At the beginning he was also sceptical over whether or not there's even somebody down there.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, in all of the recordings has filled me with more dread than the realization that... We are hearing those tapes. I love spiders, I watch mango worms being squeezed out on RUclips, darkness and tight spaces mean safety to me, I've never been afraid of being alone, I don't have any phobias at all, and I don't believe in the supernatural. But this? We seem to be the next archivist, or perhaps someone else who got to them, and this makes it oh so much more close and personal. This makes it almost... Real, at least at the moment.
what if we are the thing that is watching him? He has said in the last three episodes that whenever he goes to take a statement with the recorder, he feels that something is watching him, and we can only hear the statements that he makes with the recorder
@@jonathanmeans506 I won't spoil it for you, but in the context of what we find out later, your theory is basically canon. (I wrote this comment with the limited information we have)
A remark I'd like to make after reading this is that we have established that modern equipment doesn't mesh well with these recordings. He's using a goddamn tape recorder in 2016! Soooooo.... how can we hear all of this? Has every case been resolved? Did they make a breakthrough? Who is reformatting and uploading these recordings to youtube? John? Or someone else? It's this aspect of this series, these 'rules' that are being established that hook me in the most. To be honest I've only felt true dread once: when Sasha 'met' not-Sasha.... I hope she's alright but knowing the attitude these things generally have towards humans ... :(

21:00 ish is JUST WHAT
this whole episode is reminding me of lost johns cave with the changing routes and the darkness, and the confusion but this is so close to an actual quote. and when he said the walls were getting narrower it reminded me of gerard keayes in .. old passage? lost passage? or something who kept asking if the passage was getting narrower
lost jon's tunnels
Yeah I agree... creepy shit...
The changing paths remind me personally by the novel “House of leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski. It is really quite similar to the episode as a whole; the missions of exploring, the way of telling the stories and the general spooky vibes. Great book.
First time listener...when Jon says he’s being watched could it possibly be the thing that ‘gets’ Sasha? I remember an eerie voice walk up to the tape recorder and say “I see you.”
The “I see you” I think was John talking to the spider lol but I could definitely be wrong, but if u read the transcript it should say who talks.
Btw it could be.. But I think it’s something way bigger. Like the entity in the tunnels.. that feels more powerful than a shapeshifter and it was definitely watching him bc of the arrow the warning etc but maybe it is something even bigger than that. I feel like the plot is very intricate
@@alessiapalma8823 i don't think its an entity in the tunnels, I think the tunnels, and maybe the archive too, is an entity itself
I'm on my first listen and I feel like there's 2 "classes" of horror, the monsters, and the concepts. And I feel like the watching feeling is probably a concept
finished writing my dissertation on jeremy bentham today. suffice it to say, jon casually name-dropping the object of my academic obsession gave me a start more violent than any jumpscare. also the panopticon was actually his brother’s idea. lore drop out
Oh shit, that's so cool
holy shit it is so much more stressful hearing the account of my main guy heading alone into danger then hearing all the previous statements
"Why point me down only to tell me leave"
Quite sure that, once again, there were multiple forces in the tunnels and what ever told our theatre nerd to leave probably did them a service
Jon: Feels like he is being watched
Me, listening to Jon: 👁👄👁
Jon: “And yet I still feel as if someone is watching me”.

jon seems very healthy and mentally sound
Someone needs to take a mug of black coffee - no sugar, no milk - and a bottle of brandy, put the brandy in the coffee, and give it to Jon.

Martin and the jar of dust is adorable
Why did my mind think about a certain phrase that goes "I got a jar of dirt~"
When Jon mentioned the feeling of being watched last season, I thought he might be referring to us, but in this episode, he mentions that he feels it even when reading statements, and we don't watch him then. And with all the tapes that have gone missing... It makes me wonder who is playing them to us.
Who approved Smirke's construction? It sounds like the opposite of what was needed.
Smirke does what Smirke wants. No one tells him what to do. lol
I think the idea is that it would be hard for a prisoner to escape if the prison is like a maze.
Omg Martin is doing the post ep description from now on? What is this lifetime of blessings?
I enjoy the creepiness of these.
That chalk arrow pointing down the stairs gave me PROPER CHILLS
Two sides opposing. One wants him to discover something down there, the other wants him to stay out. Which means one thing. Jon is a threat, one that each side is either working to eliminate or exploit. Very curious.
Closed eye/ open eye motifs?
And Robert Smirke appears again.
he was the architect from the other tunnels, right?
@@f_mva
Yes, and it appears that he was also a real person. Adds a bit of realism to the files...
There is something about Jon finding out that Gertrude recorded tapes, just like him, and I think it shows that she wasn't quite as careless or chaotic as Jon made her out to be in the first episodes but it is also a little scary. We don't know what she recorded, but it could be that she did it out of the same fear of becoming a mystery, that makes Jon record everything and now he can't even access them to be witness to her existence. I don't know, but to me that thought is so tragic and so bitter
I wonder if that had to do with the twice forgotten thing that popped up on the gravestone
I finished S1 like idk 10 minutes ago, and I’ve just been crying over Martin’s lil apology for that time. But I’m pretty good now, so I’m starting S2. I guess this is kind of a metaphor for Jon being in too deep. His first monster attack came from the tunnels. Before that, Jon could hide and lie, but now he's in it for real, too deep to back out.

Oh, those ruminations on the nature of the tunnels. Hindsight is 20/20 and all, but it really is amazing how organic and well thought out even the "normal, background" descriptions are. Like, to have all this potential included right from the start and planned to this degree, so it matches absolutely perfectly, without any plotholes (at least none I could notice) and still with so awesomely ample room for speculations it is not only truly amazing, deeply humbling writing but also perfect for the genre!
Glad they kept the comments on for these videos! It’s kind of like a helpful guide and also connecting clues!

Oh man, people are saying Jon's mental health gets worse over the course of the seasons, and if it's already at this point now... How bad is it going to get? Poor guy.
Season 2 is kind of a meme for being the "Paranoid Jon" season. He gets better, but because it's the Magnus Archives better is kind of relative.

Woah, coming back and re listening to thisc podcast is so interesting, theres so much hints and foreshadowing. its almost a diffrent story
Mad ramblings aren't so mad when you know the context. Also....... Spoiler
I love the idea of uragan just trying his best to fascinate Jon and then running out of ideas then going "can you please leave now"
I caught a lot first time through for where Jon's story went, but the other characters arcs definitely hit a little different.
The arrow pointing down.... We heard previously how the things were studying how to imitate humans, studying anatomy and what-nots. I think the arrow was supposed to be the same kind of imitation, but the thing hadn't understood the reasoning of it. I don't think it wanted him to follow it down. Maybe it was imitating that arrow because it noticed he wasn't going down any areas that had been marked, and it thought that by marking it, he would skip over it too, not understanding how they were pointing back to the entrance
Great thinking! I'm going to now assume that this is what happened

I can't believe they mentioned the Panopticon this early???? I know it's an actual concept from the real world but they did say they've had the ending planned almost from the start
The foreshadowing in the series is insane.

I thought that maybe instead of chalk john could've used like a string or something but then I thought that maybe whatever demons lurked in the tunnels could cut the string and the chalk seemed to make perfect sense to me then lol
I would have taped a few hundred glow sticks to my body so I would have light all around me
Honestly I first thought of glow sticks too. I imagined just putting like a hundred of them in a net and carrying it with you but taping it to your body seems more practical tbh
I didn't think of that, but the string also occured to me! (But then again, wouldn't they just draw more arrows? Or change their direction?)
Such a twisty and turning episode
I listened to tma for the first time about a year ago. A few days ago, I decided to start over, and I was a little worried it'd be less creepy or entertaining, but thankfully I was extremely wrong. Knowing what happens later in the series makes all the little details dropped here and there wonderful :) Truly an excellent series!
He seems healthy
R E A L L Y?
THIS episode reminds me of the expeditions in the book "House of Leaves"
Not that they have a lot in common, there is just something so scary about exploring tunnels and isolated labyrinthian corridors, while something/anything could be down there. The thrill of maybe finding something amazing 🤩 and the dread of maybe finding your own end 🪦
Cons: finding your own demise
Pros: maybe you'll find a little treasure chest at the end with a plastic spider ring in.

Jon finds both!
Something I recently started thinking about is that the Magnus Institute was founded 1818, but the Millbank Prison was finished 1821. We know the Institute was build in the location of Millbank, but was it in another location while the prison was build and active?
I think so. The Institute, as in the organisation, is separate from the physical building.
It was originally located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and moved to London some time _after_ Millbank was demolished. The current institute building, like most of Kensington-Chelsea (including the Tate Gallery), is sitting on top of the site of Millbank Prison.
