This was basically his last professional game, as he got his second carreer-threatening injury a couple of days later during training. He was of course the UCL's topscorer at the time and had scored something like 13 goals in 12 serie A games since the start of the season, a rate that was just unimaginable in the defensive bunker that was mid-90's serie A. Plainly, he was at the peak of a legendary career, he was at his absolute best. He tried an early come back from injury 6 months later, for the last game of a serie A season Milan had already won hands down, scoring a header. He then played a few minutes in the unfortunate CL final against Marseille. Then he got injured again and never returned on the field again, officially announcing his retirement in a grey autumn day of 1995. This game, ladies and gentlemen, is the swan song of the Swan of Utrecht, the greatest center-forward to have ever lived.
All correct what you wrote, but i think he played much more than a few minutes in the champions league final against Marseille.
@@michelebaratt8403 he came off in the 83rd minute , his last game at 28 years old , a tragedy , he woujd have played at WC94, Euro96, WC98, not to mention he would have probably been part of the glorious Ajax 95 team as his intention was to go back to Ajax after 94 World Cup to join up with Rijkaard , now how good that team woujd have been they were already Brilliant
In a grey autumn day of 1994 😢
Injuries were already happening before December 1992 but he still managed to score enough goals before his injury and that’s how good he was
If he he stayed fit Milan would have won CL 93 and 95 cause he he was in his early 30s at that point
@@michelebaratt8403Yeh but he was literally coming back from injury and not the same at this point
Bole tackled him and that was it
As an AC Milan fan, I've had the privilege of watching some of the best footballers in the game play. In terms of sheer skill and finishing prowess, Van Basten was the best striker I've ever saw. It was horrible to see his career cut short by injury. It's also horrible when you realise this was due to the fact players in those days didn't have as much protection from fouls as they do now. Van Basten in the current football environment would annihilate teams.
I absolutely agree with your sentiment. Van Basten was the consummate professional and a credit to the sport who did not crave the limelight. He was a humble player of few words who allowed his footballing abilities to do his talking and they spoke volumes! I miss players of his calibre in today's era, but will fondly reminisce his time with Ajax and AC Milan.
Absolutely true. I love Van Basten and how he played. What most people do not realise that he had amazing ball control and was also a good playmaker in addition to his abilities as a striker.
Mate the van basten it’s a COURAGE a top top top striker is maybe best striker when it’s fit is so shame was career to short for an injuries.
Didn't people said Zalatan is the modern day van basten?
That bicycle kick was the best of them all and he became the first player to score 4 goals in a UCL match. That was a 20 years long record until Messi scored 5 goals against Leverkusen in 2012.
@Dan Swildens IFK Göteborg was actually a fairly good team at the time, and finished 2nd in this group in front of Porto and PSV Eindhoven. They weren't a great team in the sense that they would seriously challenge the better teams in the CL, but they weren't pushover either. And as for "smaller nations", Sweden finished 3rd in the World Cup two years after this game.
@Dan Swildens Two years later, during the 94/95 season, IFK Göteborg again played in the Champions League and won their group in front of these two scrub teams Barcelona and Manchester United. Lol.
@Dan Swildens Ya, in the mid 90s that's when smaller nations (half joking here I know the Netherlands are a great football nation) still could compete with the bigger leagues, because the Bosman effect hadn't yet pushed all the talent to England, Italy, Spain or Germany.
Dynamo Kiev had a similar run in 1998 with a domestic team spearheaded by Shevchenko, they even beat Barca 4-0 on Camp Nou.
Basten betterthan Messi & Ronaldo
I think it was a tie when Lewandowski scored 4 against real
Although I am a diehard Liverpool fan.. Van Basten will always be the best striker in the world for me.
Fair play. When it comes to proper legends like MVB, any football lover should be able to appreciate and enjoy these players
could've been Alan Shearer if he signed for United instead of Newcastle

My god. What a performance
A one man wrecking machine that night and on other matchdays. He was unstoppable.
The build up between Jean Pierre Papin and Van Basten for the first goal was🔥🔥!
I believe that was Jean Pierre Papin that linked up with Van Basten for that first goal.
3 Ballon Dor at age 27.. speaks volumes in an era with so many brilliant players.
@Dan Swildens Giroud is like Van Basten but without the consistency
@Dan Swildens stop being jealous of the Italian football era
@@imamoronand9199 minus the technical ability, and the pace and everything else. Giroud 😂😂😂
@Daniel Thor Copperfield
@@imamoronand9199 😂🤣 yeah, sure
My favourite player of all time. His header v real madrid in european cup in 89, is the best header Ive ever seen.
you are right
I dream of watching the full match, the San Siro stadium is full of fans, the best period for the Italian teams, especially the great Milan, in every position there is the best player in the world, please publish the full match.
my childhood idol...
Nederlandse honderd procent 🇳🇱 💖 ✔️ 🥇 🏆 🏆 🏆
There's also another goal from Van Basten from this game, which was ruled off-side, a beautiful first-time strike from just outside the box.
Should've been 5 lol.
That's true. It was an excellent finish by van Basten as well.
He got 5 against Malta in a WC Qualifer & Bergkamp got 2 in an 8-0 win.
This man is my Favorite player EVER!
Nederlandse honderd procent 🇳🇱 💖 ✔️ 🥇 🏆 🏆 🏆
What a wonderful memory...he was unlike anybody who graced the pitch
Saludos mundo
Mate is a Silvio berluosconi was a spending $$$
And he also had one chalked off for offside, I remember being allowed to stay up n watch the highlights, i loved Marco van Basten n I thought he was the best striker ever.
If he'd played (like this) in the Prem' he surely would be in one of them greatest XI's sides. Absolute class...
I miss van basten
Ti amo ♥️
Genius at work.
Beauty and classy
That was some era at AC Milano as football back then was most enjoyable. The stadium was full or close too for every home game and the fans created such an atmosphere that made the games memorable. Sadly nowadays, the stadium is nowhere near full, the atmosphere uneventful and the team lacking the quality of the past. How the passing of time has reversed the club's fortunes as they are now the Liverpool of Italy as no-one knows when the next league championship title will come.
Mate football ITS NEED AC MILAN be good again for is not same when a Milan it’s lousy side.
That’s football in general No atmosphere, no characters in the game , no superstars anymore, a sad state of affairs , Boxing has gone aswell …..
The last cry of the swan !
Great footballer
...and two out of the four goals are ridiculous. The bicycle kick, obviously, and the first goal where he's literally falling down and scores with his left. I know a perfect hat trick is scoring with the right, left and a header. But maybe some special consideration for scoring with the right, left and a bicycle kick?
I also love the fourth goal. The one-two flicked through ball to Rijkaard, on a pudding of a pitch, gets better every time I see it. He reads the bobble and reacts at lightning speed to play that! Then the switch from appealing for the foul to latching onto the loose ball, despatched with ease, shows his natural predatory instinct. The great man in microcosm - he really could do it all.
That was probably best team ever
That Milan would tear apart both Guardiola's Barca and Cristiano's Real Madrid. The best team I ever watched
Marko Marković easily beat them 👍
@@markomarkovic5729 lol, don't let nostalgia get in your mind , this very team was humbled by Marseille and ajax , and in no way sacchi or capello is better than pep guardiola.
Absolutely phenomenal player. Worth £200 million in today's market.
Super😀👍
Greatest striker
MVB one of the deadliest strikers in the world 3 time Ballan D'OR winner fantastic.
What a striker he was!🔥🔥so sad he retired at only 31☹
@Dan Swildens yes 28 was his last game, the last surgeon he saw nearly crippled him as he says himself he’s lucky to be walking, the surgeon tried a brand new technique on him where they polished his ankle bone, unfortunately they did more harm than good, absolute tragic as a fit Marco would have played in 94&98 world cups and the 96 euros and plenty more European cup and club football, one of the greatest ever players, a truly natural talent ......
Ogni trent'anni ne nasce uno nel mondo ( forse)
Legendary striker MVB🔥
Van Basten had surgery directly after this game, and sadly was never the same again
@Dan Swildens 12 goals in 9 league games to start that season, 6 goals in 5 European ties. He scored 0 European & 1 Serie A goal in the rest of his time at Milan. When he came back from the surgery later that season he played in the CL final but was a shadow of his former self.
The Best
Van basten, Romàrio, Ronaldo, Careca, Klinsmann.
Agreed , but I’d replace careca with a Batigol and Klinsmann with a Gerd muller
@@hrantesserian6439 Careca was much better than Batistuta.
Cup 86 and napoli with maradona.
Batistuta player of physical strength to fight with defenders
Hugo Sanchez instead of Careca & Stoichkov instead of Klinsmann
