2-4 times as much product??? Yep, I use too little. Worried it will make my hair look dirty or weigh it down. Just the opposite! I have Bed Head mousse at home....will try that trick. BUT I also just ordered Powder! Now, when I leave my hair curly....almost too much volume with no volume products. Go figure! LOL!
Layers up top, mousse and blow dry upside down or keep diffuser with fingers on top of head stationary a couple minutes at a time. Root lifters or dry shampoo
Thanks Justin! I love how invested you are in this series! I never get the feeling that you are just after likes, but really trying to help women like their own hair. You have lots of great topics and ideas, and always respond with appreciation and enthusiasm 💕
Hey Valerie! Thank you so much! I definitely don’t hunt for likes. I truly want this channel to be about helping people build confidence. It’s something that I’ve always struggled with and constantly work through. Helping others also helps me so win win. ;) AND…it feels great to know I can help.
What a brilliant video. As Einstein once said "If you can't explain it simply, you don't know it well enough". This gentleman really knows his stuff. The attention to all the little tips, is something that I have never had from any other hairdresser (e.g. bend in the mid shaft). Thank you Justin, for your generosity in sharing. This Aussie girl is going to have better hair from now on!
I learned about drying my long hair upside down many years ago. It does work very well. Also, I saw a girl at work who was curling her hair with a hand dryer and round brush to refresh her curls on lunch break. I always wondered how she kept those curls all day. ❤️
I’m somewhat new to your channel, but I’m hooked! I’ve been binging as many of your videos as I can. I love the “hair sage meets National Geographic” aspect of these videos! They are informative & interesting, with stunning backgrounds. Thanks for your earnestness and great tips! Your personality is infectious!
I have a chin length bob of thin, fine hair. I use mousse or gel (or any free sample I have) and then put large, velcro rollers in my hair, spray my hair with hairspray and then do my makeup, have breakfast and get ready for my day. When I finally remove the rollers, my hair is big and bouncy. I basically shape with my fingers and give a final zap with hairspray.
Right video at the right time for me : ) I guess I haven't paid enough attention to your other vids on the topic but thanks for going through it all again. I'm 58 and have never had a problem 'doing' my hair because it's always had good body from loose perms. Now as I age and after chemo my hair is so thin (& it's always been fine) that a pony is smaller than my pinky finger. I've been so discouraged I wear hats & head bands ALL the time and that in-and-of-itself has caused even more fallout. Thanks Justin for remembering us who feel like life has thrown us for a loop and don't know how to do our hair anymore. I have dreaded the men's style haircut most women seem get after a certain age. I am pleased to try another tool - dry shampoo rather than hairspray - to maintain some lift, Thank you!!! : D
Thanks for sharing Katherine. I feel your struggle and hope this video helps you. Justin featured Dominque Sachse in this video and last week she did a candid video on hair loss that might be helpful. It was an eye opener and might give you even more ideas. I'm trying Justin's suggestions right now to see if I can disguise my hair loss at the top of my head. Hugs to you🥰
Thank you for that! I’m glad I can help and I don’t come across to obnoxious! I can be a bit much at times…I’m ok with that but not everyone else is! Lol. Thank you.
I needed this. Thank you! I just love watching you! And your sweet wife! I struggle with unruly hair cowlicks and Perimenopause wave. And I have super fine thin hair. So I am always battling taming my hair by drying it how I wany it to lay but then also drying it opposite for body. The struggle is real. Thanks for all your wisdom! We love it!
Perfect Timing! I'm suffering from covid/age hair loss at the top of my head but the rest of my hair is thick. Styling used to be a breeze, but now I'm styling for two different heads. It seems to look best when I leave the natural wave, but I still like to blow it out. I'm going to try using product just where I need the lift and volume and leave the rest without it. Wish me luck!
I just found you today on youtube. Was praying I could find away to get more volume it never worked before , but this sounds like it might can’t wait to try it. I’m in Nashville tn would love to have you do my hair. I’m needing a makeover. I’m a widow and trying to find what looks good on me nowadays is hard. Thanks for this video I’m very excited. Love all the scenery it’s a bonus. Blessings and safe travels. Sabrina 💕
Hey Sabrina! Welcome to the fam! Thanks for hanging out. I hope this helps, make sure to check out my other videos linked in the description, it sounds like they may help you a lot. Thanks again for the support here!
Thank you Justin ! So helpful. I loved seeing the video inserts of you teaching clients how to blow dry their own hair. I would LOVE it if you would consider another series where you do just that. Show / explain to clients how they can create their own hairstyles (as you would set it), letting them actually do it themselves. That would be super useful. Styling your hair after that first wash after you have had it styled professionally is such a let down! Well for me it is anyway. Thanks for considering this and reading it as I am pretty sure you read most of the comments. Happy travels !!
I've been fighting flat hair all my life. I found a product called Puff Me that works really well. That and your tips work well when my haircut is fresh. Thank you for your videos!! I look forward to them each week!
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that. I’m actually on the hunt for a good volumizing product. I’ll have to try this one! I appreciate the insight.
Hey Justin Hickox! Great video! I love your communication style, your expertise, and the interesting, beautiful scenery for your shoot. I am an elder with thinning hair, so I appreciate all your tips and product suggestions!
Hi Justin, that was really helpful. I've picked up tips from your other videos, but this one just kind of tied them all together. My hair is naturally wavy, and more so when I keep it short and layered. I buy a volumising spray from the hairdressers and then I just tip my head upside down and scrunch it - the hairdresser did that when I went and it worked perfectly, so I've just carried on doing it. I've really taken on board what you've said about getting volume in the right places and it's made such a difference! So thank you again. And just for the record, that view does not suck! 😀
I have been blessed with very fine, limp hair and have always kept it short because of my face shape and small size. Great tips, I've certainly struggled over the years getting/keeping volume on top! Can't wait to try these.
Thanks for all the tips in 1 place. Liked the reminder, to showcase the volume in one place, maybe remove it in another. Adding bend = adding volume. And of course, my fave from forever, dry against the style. I almost always start the blow drying with my head upside down, I have done this since I was a teen (and that was a long time ago). I always learn so much from you, thanks for your, and your wife's efforts.
What, we’re you reading my mind about this? Your videos are so helpful and I look forward to them. Thank your wife too as I thoroughly enjoy her “cameos” and views!
Hi Justin, Always always always... learn something new when I watch your videos! So yep, yet another week of great video addition! Today, I learnt that I am using a wrong size brush to create volume! Can't wait for your van life! I am so excited floor is done! Lots of love from Charlotte, NC ❤️
Hey! Great seeing you as always. I’m so glad that he picked up another nugget of information. We’re really excited about vanlife to! Well, I am, my wife is partly excited and partly terrified about being stuck in a small space with me for too long! Lol. How cool that you saw the floor, what do you think about it?
You are WAY TOO kind! Thank you Olivia! There are a TON of stylists that are amazing and many that I could learn a lot from. I appreciate you though for saying that!
Thank you! Another awesome video. I am always struggling with products. I keep buying more and I guess the problem is not using enough. I hate sticky hair, too.
I’ve had some great hair cuts. I have an old friend who used to cut hair she does a light crown lift cut around the top of head. ALWAYS always gives my hair an awesome lift across the top of my hair. No one else seems to be able to duplicate it! A lot of time no matter how good the hair cut is the crown of my hair lays flat and they sell me products or tell me lift it this way or that. It never seems to work! One quick root lift cut from her and boom! Root lift, no product. I think I might film her do her little magic to show the gals that cut and color my hair
I have been following your videos and playing with my hair. I tend to wash my hair Saturday nights before going to bed. I don’t add any mousse or root lift, just a pump & a half of heat protectant. Then get up in the morning and attacking it with a flat iron (or curling iron recently, if I want to kick it up a notch) to calm it down. I’m one of those women who don’t like the stiffness of product, although I have been using hair spray to help it after straightening/curling in the morning. After watching this video, I want to try using the root lift and applying it as you say, blowing it out with a round brush and putting a bend in it. Thanks Justin!
That’s awesome Diana! I totally hear where you’re coming from with the feeling of product. The roundbrush (if you’re not used to using it) will have a bit of a learning curve but can work REALLY well. Make sure to watch the video I put in the description of this video about how to roundbrush hair as there are some nuances that make a HUGE difference. Also know that it won’t make your hair feel quite as “slick” or “soft” as an iron but that’s also part of the reason they tend to give better volume. Hair that’s too “clean” feeling doesn’t get volume well at all.
Thank you Justin for the tips & tricks for volume. I recently got a graduated bob cut & have been struggling with getting lift & volume on top. I'm excited to try your suggestions. Thanks again!
My last perm was 16 months ago, and my hair it TOTALLY unmanageable. It really helps that I've been drying my top in the reverse direction. I wish your salon was closer 😏
I'm taking your advice and have started using a volumizing gel that I have. Yes, I have noticed a difference. :) I know you and your wife are traveling now, but I would love to book an appointment someday when you are back in Portland.
I've got baby fine hair, bang straight and not a lot of it.My 2 saviours are blow-drying the opposite way and dry shampoo as you say. The drying technique was a game changer for me. I let it cool while I do my makeup and it makes such a difference 👍
I don't blow dry my hair (haven't for a decade or more), so after a shower I oil then french braid my hair, use hairspray, then leave it in for 2-3 days, then take it out and use volumizing dry shampoo.. that volume will last 3-4 days. I don't use a curling or flat iron either, so I do mine all without tools.
I think I am product impaired. When I try to use volumizing products and blow dry my brush gets stuck and I feel like I am tearing my hair out or I don't get enough and it slides thru too easily. Maybe I am not pulling it thru enough and leaving too much at the root. You have given me some good things to think about. Thank you. As always...good info! I have beach envy by the way.
Hey Justin! Great video! I have fine, flat hair so I HAD to watch and actually learned a few things 🤓 Thanks for schooling me haha Sending love your way 🤍🤍🤍
I have hair that cannot handle much product at all. It’s very difficult to give my roots lift and add volume to my hair. My stylist tries. In fact she’s AMAZING! In spite of this I leave the salon with completely flat hair. Not a good look for me at my age. Flat hair is aging. My routine. We cut my hair in a Bob that just grazes my shoulders. We added highlights (best volumizer fir me) I leave my hair in a towel until my makeup is done. I dry my hair upside-down. I use the products recommended on this channel. I curl the bottom of my hair in very large sections. I stopped using so much hairspray. I currently have root lift and volume. My secret is very little product and following tge above steps.
Hello Justin, I am really enjoying advise and tips in your videos. I am wondering if the flat irons that you suggest here are the same ones you would suggest to someone whose hair length is to my earlobe? Thank you.
Love your content! I'd love to see more of your wife and her beauty tips as well. I love her style! Also...have you ever considered doing online consultations? I have seen at least one other youtuber offering these (at a fee of course). I think you'd have many including myself eager to have some guidance.
Great video. Thank you. Batisse volume powder works best for me...it takes some getting used to..& a tad too much totally weighs it down...it looks how I want it to look but it makes my hair texture feel not like shiny clean hair.
Great tips! Sadly can't use the Powder dry shampoo because it contains lavender, to which i am allergic. I don't know why beauty/care products use lavender. It seems to be a very common allergy. Arghh.
Where can submit pictures for advice? I'm 52 and have brand new white hair after chemo for breast cancer last year.. I'm a blank slate and would love your advice for the hairstyle I could grow into! And you can help me decide if I should color the white (and I mean WHITE) or embrace it. 😁
@@justinhickox yes. It’s the bending at the ends. I have wavy hair and like to wear it straight but not flat (I was a teen in the 70’s). Big hair was cool but not in fashion anymore! Love your tips! Binge watch when I can.
Oh, a lifelong quest. I would be rich but for all the hair brushes, tools, products. And, so, digging through comments for more! Stopping. . .to listen. Your turn, Justin!! "an optical illusion" - my hair firmly embraces reality, LOL!
Justin, I have the exact opposite problem. My hair is very thick and coarse. Extremely difficult to find a hair dresser who can cut my hair without seeing blunt lines where cut. I’ve recently had layers cut in my shoulder length hair. Looks great in the front but shaggy and frizzy with the layers in back. Any suggestions? Is there such thing as having too thick hair for layering?
I totally hear what you’re saying. I’ve actually done a video that will teach you how to blend those choppy layers in for yourself at home. I’ll link it below, definitely check it out. Not only will it explain why this is happening (no it’s not your hair texture), it will give you super simple steps for blending it at home. It’s actually much easier to fix this than people think. Hope it helps…. ruclips.net/video/GVFTdDVFxDs/видео.html
Lol! It definitely didn’t. I had to question though….aren’t vultures scavengers that feed on dead, or dying things? Did all those birds look at me and think…”ehhh, this guys about 150 years old, he’ll probably die in a few minutes….let’s hang out”??? Lol!
Nice view. And your model is beautiful. I mean your wife. This was very informative. Thanks. And I was wondering what kind of birds those were, before the close up. They looked huge from far away.
I need your help! I need volume or a haircut to give me volume. My hair is thin and long. Noone can truly say they can do hair if they only work on nice thick hair. I feel if they work on thin, fine hair and make it look good thats the true challenge and shows true skill. Just dont trust anyone. I haven't done anything with my hair for years. Are you in fort worth texas 😆
@@justinhickox the amount of product to use. I've only used mousse when I have my hair really short. Since my hair is currently long( waiting to decide what to do with it) I don't use it, my hair gets curlier when its long.
I have long hair, I stay away from blow drying and let it dry naturally. The same goes for curling irons or flat irons. I do use products in my hair. I usually wear it up or half up. Do you have advice for those of us who do not use any heat on our hair? I thoroughly enjoy your videos and the scenery! 🫶
Velcro Rollers! Air dry with Velcro or after dried use them. They do Work better with Some Heat (diffused air) for a few seconds. Then let them Cool. Check out RUclips so Many creators Have Velcro Vlogs. Shoot Honda Abs Kathie Lee used to use them So good enough for Me !
I saturate my hair from roots to ends with Redken Guts. I towel dry my hair really good first, until it's almost dry and then saturate. My husband annoyingly says I use too much but I only shampoo every 4 days. Once I get the product in the first day all I have to do is touch up with the dryer and use a little dry shampoo the other days. I also use a texture paste only on day one after the blow out. My stylist tells me the difference in my hair with no product vs. styled is huge, literally. lol
Any tips on hiding Grey on darker hair? How to find a good stylist in Houston, TX? I have not been able to find a stylist to cut my hair the way I want it. I always get the trendy hair cut, waves.
These are great tips- as always. Do you still have clients at a salon or do you mainly teach? I would fly in from Michigan. I would have great hair and my husband could enjoy views that don’t suck 😂😎
Thank you Jill! I currently do have take clients at my salon however I’m only at the salon one week per month and currently booked solid with a cancellation list. I feel very fortunate that I’ve got such amazing folks out there that actually want to trust me with their hair but feel bad I can’t get through everyone.
Absolutely. I’ve done a couple videos on curly hair in my “Hair Mistakes…Subscriber Edition” that may help, if you haven’t already seen them. Here’s a quick few tips though: 1. Diffuse dry hair upside down so your hair is off your scalp on top. 2. Make sure you have enough layering on top that the layers are short enough to help take some of the bulk from the sides. 3. Depending on length, you can layer the sides to help remove volume from them. I know these are mainly about the cut and not styling tips but, as you know I’m sure, you can only style so much of the volume out of the sides…most of it has to be cut out. The shape is REALLY cut into curly hair more than styled. Styling mainly deals with the curl amount and removing the frizz etc. Hope that makes sense.
Same here! It seems to go through spells of flat on top and then give it a few weeks and it seems to remedy itself. Wonder if it has to do with the pattern of curl in the growing process? So yeah Justin, help us curly girls!
@@justinhickox I've suspected it's my cut but I've avoided trimming the sides since they add to the length at the bottom, but I'm going to try taking a bit more from the sides. If it doesn't work out will always grow back. Thanks!
I flip my head upside down to blow dry. This adds a ton of volume. Also blow dry hair upside-down just running fingers & scrunch hair until almost dry. Flip head back over and finish the blow dry with large round brush. Be careful not to use scorching heat, nor pull on the damp hair or scalp. Wet damp hair is prone to breakage. Once a hairstylist used high heat on my hair and scalp, digging the round brush into my scalp. I was too afraid to speak up. Man did my head hurt when I left there.
What do you suggest for straight hair from scalp top to ears then moderate wave from ear down it seem I end up with too much fluff around my ears and then the very ends go straight again about the last inch or two. Although I have embraced this as years go on I need the volume at the top to balance the fluff.
Im 43 and have absolutely no idea how to style my hair. I wash & go dye to my hectic lifestyle. I wish I had more time to really do anything with my hair. My hair takes forever to dry completely and curls refuse to stay. I can waste an hour drying my hair then an hour making tight curls only to have them completely disappear within 3-4 hours like I used no product at all. As long as my hair isn’t too dry, I can literally shake my head and knots untangle themselves. It’s very flat though & I’m at a loss :(
Thank you for these tips and for providing the links in your comments section - that is so helpful. Also, thank you for saying you should put 2 to 4 times as much product in your hand as your normally would...... this is so me lol Great views too :)
I recently had my hair cut into a shoulder length Bob (from mid back length). I do all of the things you mention in this video, but instead of my hair rounding under, it flips out at the bottom. It drives me crazy. How do I fix/prevent this? Is it the cut? My styling technique? Both? Something else? Please HELP!!
I saw a video where they said if it's a blunt bob, cut the back ever-so-slightly shorter than the front, and in the back cut a thin bottom layer just the teeniest bit shorter than the rest to keep it from flipping.
I have tried using round brushes but have not had any luck with them. My hair is thick and the brush just get stuck or pulls my hair out when I force it. Is it me or the brush?
What volume tricks have you discovered??
Blow drying my hair upside down. Putting it, loosely, up in a ponytail on top of my head while I sleep.
I use redken 18 mouse and gel combo and I used root lift by Kendra with a little back teasing.
2-4 times as much product??? Yep, I use too little. Worried it will make my hair look dirty or weigh it down. Just the opposite! I have Bed Head mousse at home....will try that trick.
Never heard of this. I think we'd all like to see a demo.
Probably taking the section of the crown on top and near the back, hold vertical, cutting straight across
@@labornurse I think so
I have been following your videos and playing with my hair.
Okay. I’m good with that.
Thank you Justin for the tips & tricks for volume. I recently got a graduated bob cut & have been struggling with getting lift & volume on top. I'm excited to try your suggestions. Thanks again!
Thank you Justin. Learned 3 tips today to what I "thought" I already knew. ☺
Another great video 🎥 I really appreciate when you speak about specific products to use 👍Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Justin! Awesome video! Any tips, hair products, etc., always help so much!!❤️
Nice tips , sir.. So naturally presented !! ❣🌹
Thank you for explaining why you do what you do (as in all your videos). I will try this volume issue next shampoo.
Love these tips!! Thank you for all the help!
Always good info and fun to watch, Justin!
I've got baby fine hair, bang straight and not a lot of it.My 2 saviours are blow-drying the opposite way and dry shampoo as you say. The drying technique was a game changer for me. I let it cool while I do my makeup and it makes such a difference 👍
Thank you Justin learned so much from you
Thank you so much really interesting about the size of round brush for length of hair!!
can you recommend a few good round brushes, please? love your channel!! Thanks and gorgeous view
Thank you!!! I really like the Olivia Garden brushes. I’ve been using them in the salon for over a decade and they’ve been amazing for me.
That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing this process. Sounds like it’s working perfectly for you!!
I have fine, flat hair so I HAD to watch and actually learned a few things 🤓 Thanks for schooling me haha Sending love your way 🤍🤍🤍
Always love your tips. Thank you!
I always dry my hair upside down.
That’s awesome! So glad I could help! Upside down is a HUGE one!!
I was just thinking about this, thanks for the tips!!
We added highlights (best volumizer fir me)
I leave my hair in a towel until my makeup is done.
Thank you.
Got to hate that view! Haha! Thank you so much for your videos! Im a fine hair girl and I need all the help (and lift) I can get!
Such good info ! !
When do you use a paste, mousse, root lift spray, etc? What hair length is best for each of these?
I can always use more tips about volume!
Great information!
Thank you. Was there a certain tip that stuck out for you?
@@justinhickox yes. It’s the bending at the ends. I have wavy hair and like to wear it straight but not flat (I was a teen in the 70’s). Big hair was cool but not in fashion anymore! Love your tips! Binge watch when I can.
Love your tips / advice! Always very informative and helpful. 👍🏻🇨🇦❤️
Thank you! I’m so glad I can help. Was there any tip that stood out for you?
Thank you so much for responding. I will check out the link.
That view definitely did not suck……even with the “Death Chickens”.😎
Just what I needed to hear. Ty
Great information 👍
I need your help! I need volume or a haircut to give me volume. My hair is thin and long. Noone can truly say they can do hair if they only work on nice thick hair. I feel if they work on thin, fine hair and make it look good thats the true challenge and shows true skill. Just dont trust anyone. I haven't done anything with my hair for years. Are you in fort worth texas 😆
Great info for volume. Views didn't suck.
Thank you! And yes, those views DID not suck! Was there a tip that stick out for you Julie?
@@justinhickox the amount of product to use. I've only used mousse when I have my hair really short. Since my hair is currently long( waiting to decide what to do with it) I don't use it, my hair gets curlier when its long.
I have long hair, I stay away from blow drying and let it dry naturally. The same goes for curling irons or flat irons.
I do use products in my hair. I usually wear it up or half up.
Do you have advice for those of us who do not use any heat on our hair?
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and the scenery! 🫶

Great advice! Have you found a dry shampoo for auburn or brunettes that doesn’t leave a white film?
This made sense to me 😂😂thanks I will try these tips .😀
Doing the no poo water only wash has given me volume and style everyday.
Your clients are lucky to have you-you are very talented! Maybe one day I will make the list!🤞🏻🙏🏻
“Death Chicken” that’s too funny 😂
I have curly hair and I love it...but...I do have a problem with it being flatter on top than I would like. Any tips for curly hair?
Absolutely. I’ve done a couple videos on curly hair in my “Hair Mistakes…Subscriber Edition” that may help, if you haven’t already seen them. Here’s a quick few tips though:
I have that problem as well 😏
I believe my issue may involve my cut and I'm not sure how to go about it to have that "lift" on top
Thanks!
Another doubt sir - while using heating tools , mousse applied on the hair became diluted by heat ?
I flip my head upside down to blow dry. This adds a ton of volume. Also blow dry hair upside-down just running fingers & scrunch hair until almost dry.
Flip head back over and finish the blow dry with large round brush. Be careful not to use scorching heat, nor pull on the damp hair or scalp. Wet damp hair is prone to breakage.
Once a hairstylist used high heat on my hair and scalp, digging the round brush into my scalp. I was too afraid to speak up.
Man did my head hurt when I left there.
Justin what are your thoughts about thickening tonics for fine, flat hair?
What do you suggest for straight hair from scalp top to ears then moderate wave from ear down it seem I end up with too much fluff around my ears and then the very ends go straight again about the last inch or two. Although I have embraced this as years go on I need the volume at the top to balance the fluff.
Sir, what about Revlon one step volumizer ? Will that help to some extent ?
Very helpful and grateful thank you. Deborah Ireland
It’s very flat though & I’m at a loss :(
Thanks for the great tips today. Also loved the view
You’re so welcome! Was there any tip that stood out for you?
Thank you!!!!!!!
Thank you for these tips and for providing the links in your comments section - that is so helpful. Also, thank you for saying you should put 2 to 4 times as much product in your hand as your normally would...... this is so me lol
Great views too :)
@@lauraoliver7238 Thankyou!
Your wife looks beautiful with “flat” hair and voluminous hair.
I have tried using round brushes but have not had any luck with them. My hair is thick and the brush just get stuck or pulls my hair out when I force it. Is it me or the brush?
Why can we not get white hair pieces to help? can't find them anywhere!
What do you think about root perms?
Thanks for the tips! You said everything except where you are with the view that doesn't suck!?!???
