As a person from Latin America. I need to say:
The World "Latinx" is grammatically incorrect; On English, there is not a gender use like in Spanish.
You don't use "Mexicanx" to refer to someone from Mexico, you use "Mexican".
This is why the term "Latin" is the correct one. Not Latino, or Latina (Demonyms from Spanish) If someone wants to learn proper English, this is the correct term. (in Grammarly, a grammar application it says so.)
Also, a Latin may be from Europe or the Americas. You may use "Latin-American" for the ones from the Americas and "Latin-European" for the people from Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, and Romania.
If someone that barely speak English with some grammatical errors, need to explain that, something is wrong with society.

What pisses me off about this whole ideology of Latinx, besides erasing an integral part of the basic structure of the language, is that y'all are even trying to use "le" as an alternative to el and ella. Le already has a use in Spanish, and using it incorrectly takes away from the language. It's also "the" in French. So you're asking to be referred to as a "the," which is dehumanizing. Saying Latino is NOT erasing a non-binary person's identity, it's just how our language is structured, when we address our people as Latinos we are not using it under some sexist agenda. It does not make you male because of the -o. Fucking come on. We'd have to change our entire lexicon, and nothing would make sense. Lx cilla. Lx manzana. Le caballo. You are mocking your own culture. Learn Spanish.

Second point. My ex-girlfriend is Brazilian, and I also lived in Spain for three years, and I can tell you that almost no Brazilian refers to themselves as Latino (opting instead for Brazilian) and no Spaniard refers to themselves as Hispanic (opting for either Spanish or Spaniard). Then what is the difference between Latino and Hispanic? I understand Latino, someone from Latin America. But if someone who is Latino is born and raised in the USA and doesn't speak Spanish then are they Hispanic? If they are then the two terms are interchangeable and mean the same thing since Brazilians really don't call themselves Latino. If they're not (meaning it only refers to Spanish speakers) then Spanish speaking people from Philippines, Morocco and Equatorial Guinea are Hispanic, as well as nonnative Spanish people who learned the language and now speak it fluently.

    • @lidiareyes7048

As you saw in the video, being Latino is for a geographical location, and in that case you can say American of Latin American (xx country) descendance.

And yes, people from Equatorial Guinea are Hispanics because they speak Spanish as a result of the conquers

1.-Most people I hear referring to Latin or Hispanic people as "Spanish" are third and fourth generation Latin-Americans.
2.-I have yet to meet a non US born native speaker of Spanish who doesn't think of "Latinx" as ridiculous. Even those who want to use a gender neutral term use "Latin@" or "Latine" for this purpose.
3.-The geographic vs linguistic explanation for Latin vs Hispanic is wrong. Both are geographic. Latin refers to people from former colonies of Spain and Portugal. Hispanic refers to the former Spanish colonies in the Americas. As far as I know "Hispanic" is not applied to (or claimed by) people from Spain, Equatorial Guinea, or the small Philippine minority who speak Spanish nor is "Latin" or "Latin American" applied to the Québécois.

I never identified myself as an Hispanic, in fact no one in my country use that term. We do use Latino, South-American or Peruvian but Hispanic (Hispano) for us means someone who is from Spain, and I believe it is the same for the rest of the South-American countries. I don't want to be disrespectful for those who identify as Hispanic but in my case even when I know I have Spanish ancestry I know I'm not Hispanic because I wasn't born in Spain. For example if you call British to an American just because they speak English and they have British ancestry, they will get upset because they are really proud to be American and they have their own culture and tradition, well is the same for me. By calling me Hispanic is like denying I'm Peruvian so to be honest I hate to be called like that.

Therefore, Spaniards are Latinos and French people are too. 2. Being Latina/o is not really based on geographic location, is language based. Although, Hispanic could be (is) someone from a country that was colonized previously by Spanish people (Spanish-descendent) well, obviously they are from Spanish-speaking countries. If you said Latin American that would be more based on geographical location than language based but it's still language based.

Origin of "Latino"[edit] Further information: Latino -The term Latin America was first coined by the French in the 19th century as Amérique latine, during the time of the French Intervention in Mexico. It is a combination of the ancient European word "latino" and the New World; "America". It was used to symbolically sever Mexico's Spanish roots, while at the same time, reinforcing a
notion of belonging between the two nations. The Latin race, as defined in this
context, was composed of all people descending from nations who spoke romance
tongues, descending from Latin. This definition would effectively include French,
Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian peoples as "latinos" along with the people
descended from Latin colonies. Napoleon III used the term to justify the French
occupation, saying that France was interested in preserving the Latin race against
Anglo-Saxon, or American imperialism, as the French nation saw the emerging nation as
    a threat.
The adoption of the term "Latino" by the US Census Bureau in 2000[31] and its
subsequent media attention brought about several controversies and disagreements,
specifically in the United States and, to a lesser extent, in Mexico and other
Spanish-speaking countries. Regarding it as an arbitrary, generic term, many Latin
American scholars, journalists and organizations have objected to the mass media use
of the word "Latino", pointing out that such ethnonyms are optional and should be
used only to describe people involved in the practices, ideologies and identity
politics of their supporters.[32][33][34][35] They argue that if "Hispanic" is an
imposed official term, then so is "Latino",[36] since it was the French who coined
the expression "Latin America" (Amérique latine) to refer to the Spanish, French, and
Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere, during their support of the
    Second Mexican Empire.[37]
These definitions thus arguably do not include Brazilian Americans,[11][22][41]
especially since the Census Bureau classifies Brazilian Americans as a separate
ancestry group from "Hispanic or Latino".[42] A surge of Portuguese-Americans faced a
big scare when the Census Bureau revealed plans to categorize people of Portuguese
descent as “Hispanics” in the 2020 National Census. The unified feelings of dispute
were displayed in a national survey conducted by Palcus within the Portuguese-
American community. The results were an overwhelming 90% of participants objecting to
Portuguese-Americans being classified under the Hispanic ethnicity. Fortunately for
those opposed to the Portuguese-as-Hispanic classification, the Census Bureau later
released an update stating that they never intended to classify people of Portuguese
descent as Hispanic in the 2020 National Census.[43][4
What most of us know and what the results from the 1992 Latino National Political
survey demonstrate is a preference for place of origin or national identity in what
we call ourselves. Face-to-face interviews of 2,817 people were conducted in 1989 and
1990. Some 57 percent to 86 percent of Mexicans and Puerto Ricans-whether born in
Mexico or born in the United States, whether born in the island or in the mainland-
preferred to call themselves Mexican or Puerto Rican rather than panethnic names like
    Hispanic or Latino.[58]
    A Pew Hispanic Center survey[59] conducted November 9 - December 7, 2011, and
    published April 4, 2012, reported:
Nearly four decades after the United States government mandated the use of the terms
"Hispanic" or "Latino" to categorize Americans who trace their roots to Spanish-
speaking countries, a new nationwide survey of Hispanic adults finds that these terms
still haven't been fully embraced by Hispanics themselves. A majority (51%) say they
most often identify themselves by their family's country of origin; just 24% say they
    prefer a pan-ethnic label.

Latin Americans have no right to twist the term Latino, change its meaning and use it for themselves when the Latin European colonizers called that area "Latin America". They are Latin Americans and have no Latin anything. The Latin is only in the language.

You got that right. The Latinos or Latins which is the same are those in Europe: Italians, French, Romanians, Portuguese and Spaniards. Those in Latin America are "Latin Americans" and Latin/Latino is not a Skin Color, not a race and not an ethnicity. Latin/Latino refers to Language and culture. Everything Latin/Latino be it the Latin People, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Roman Italy. Latin America was called this way because the languages spoken brought there by the Latin European colonizers, French, Portuguese and Spanish, are Latin-derived languages. There is a lot of confusion among the people of Latin America. Latin/Latino is interpreted as being their Skin Color or DNA or their race. Latino/Latin refers only to language and culture. Then it's not grammatically correct saying " I'm Latino or I'm Latina". In English it would be "I'm Latin". In Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish it's " Latino/Latina" but not using the English language.

This is a particular view of people from US. Latin is a culture, because comes from the Latin language and places that were "colonized" by the ancient Roman Empire and developed languages of Latin origins. So, yes, Spain must be included and also Portugal, France and Italy itself. Of course, countries in America that were colonized by any of these peoples has developed Latin cultures (or inspired by) also. That includes Argentina, Mexico, Cuba and, of course, Brazil. By the way, most Brazilians do not identify as Latino precisely because of the mislead explanations given from the people of US on the subject. It is not a race or a ethnicity or a matter of Geography. It is a cultural thing and also a language thing. FYI: Morena Baccarin is Brazilian. Period.

Cave Beast Hispanic is a Roman Latin word used to identify the people of Hispania. Hispania was the Roman territory of the Iberian Peninsula. Today that is Spain and Portugal. So yes the original and only Hispanics who have a blood claim on the word are the Spanish and Portuguese people.

Hispanic actually means descended from Hispania, the Roman province that includes Iberia. So Brazil and Mexico are Hispanic. So are Gibraltar and Portugal. Latino is an English word and a Spanish word. In Spanish, latino means Latin. In English, latino means descends from a Latin speaking country, usually in the American continent. So Haiti, Quebec, and French Guiana are Latino. America refers to North and South America. Latino was borrowed from the Spanish language.

Latines is still slightly ludicrous and unnecessary in most circumstances (because well over 99,9% of people actually do identify as male or female, including the first four letter of the LGBTQI ‘community’), but at least it’s not made up by some yanqui.

The Latino term changes its meaning according to the language. You can't translate "Latino” from English directly into Portuguese, for example. It doesn't work, they don't have the same meanings, especially when it carries ethnic meaning.
In Portuguese “Latino”it does not have the same ethnic meaning as in English. In fact, I venture to say that in Romance languages, no “Latino" has the ethnic meaning of English. In general it means Latin linguistic heritage and not genetic heredity.
Latino can be everyone who speaks languages that originated from Latin or from nations that were within the ex-Roman empire, including English itself if its 60% vocabulary and other French grammatical influences put it in the Romance language group.
Latino is a weird concept because the USA itself was not colonized by England, even Canada. Both were largely colonized by Spain and / or France. In the case of the USA, only a small coastal strip in the Atlantic was colonized by England. And that little by little it was taking and buying land in the west until the Pacific, mainly after independence - when it was no longer an English colony.
It is important to remember that the French, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian and Spanish languages are all of Latin origin.
Finally, the confusing term "Latino" in English, Canada is officially spoken in French, in addition to English. Canadian native French speakers are Latino?
