The hardest part was finding something that would be a challenge because the AI loves spamming trash units even late game. FINALLY! Someone used Satsuma to create units with supperior Accuracy. I always do this when playing because I realized having superior quality is way better performance and cost wise than just sheer numbers when playing FOTS because one good unit can destroy multiple inferior units. The army in this case could have used some melee just as fodder to catch a shogitai spam army. Also why how hasn't he unlocked the suppression fire ability? Doesn't he know that the debuff on accuracy pretty much is negligible when you have elite units with modified accuracy. Suppression fire causes morale damage and increases fire rate by alot it's broken when used with very accurate units.
Suppression Fire drains A LOT of ammunition though. It's not worth the long research time and in my opinion the benefits of it are marginal at best. No scenario where suppression fire is necessary or desirable can't also be achieved with gatling guns.

That shogun superior gameplay. Pikes walking directly into machine guns on an flat open terrain map. This is why Shogun was best, no game can match it today.
Not worth the effort, gatlings would do unacceptable friendly fire and the protruding flanks would end up taking the brunt of the enemy army, honestly the best tactic on flat ground is just straight spaghetti lines so every single man can shoot in kneel fire, Gguns dispersed throughout. Legend deployed his Gguns badly imo they became a constant distraction for him, just set them up in line with the infantry and if you’re worried about cav charges just proactively set up your own gun cav behind and nothing will get through
@@jamiemcerlain5897 Seemed to work alright for me. I've also tested a zig-zag arrangement, with infantry covering the frontline at an angle and shielding the Gatling guns behind them (which are perpendicular to them), which then enfilade the front of the next unit of infantry along the line, and repeated.
Something I find incredibly interesting is how well shogun 2 is doing on the channel. It was a fun battle but really demonstrated the fact that both Gatling guns and carbine cav needed another patch. Gatlings are still inefficient for their cost and research requirement and the cav still cause way to many friendly fire incidents for the amount of micro they require.
The Armstrong cannons have longer reach, so they start firing when the enemy is still tightly clumped together, easily getting LOADS of kills. With their shorter range, the Gatling cannons excell at taking out infantry formations, but can also be well used against Cavalry as they have little aim issues against fast moving targets. Of course there still is SOME issue, the unit takes time to turn, but the projectile speed is much higher in-game.
FOTS battles are so much fun, and very satisfying! One thing I wish CA would've thought of though is the option to define the direction of fire for units. Maybe someone could make a mod for this, if it already doesn't exist?
Every FOTS video has been so sick and definitely helped me decide to cop it on sale. Seeing the bullet trails fly across the battlefield gives me so much hope for the prospect of total war warhammer 40k. There could be so much potential for that title as long as there are large maps
I think it wouldve been fair to put the gattling guns on some elevation to limit the friendly fire since that's how you use this stack. Still a great video as always Legend!
after playing with gatlings for a few hours i gotta say, 2 in one army are more then enough, have a stack of 16 units: general, 2 gatlings, 4 armstrong, 9 line inf.(3 foreign marines, 2 republic guard and 4 republic inf.) and i smash anything and everything. the otehr 4 slots where for some cav. but as a republic, i was lazy to research carbines and not in the mood to micro revolver cav. probably will train yari cav when i get another armor smith province xD
I think one of my gripes is that the AI is so dumb in these total war games. They've really bumped up the abilities of the AI in recent games and im excited to see that implemented in future gunpowder age games
Imo even though the gatling guns are a bit less efficient, the shock and morale damage is in practice extremely useful; just by putting a lone gatling gun in the middle of your formation you can inflict massive morale issue on the enemy before they even get in range of your infantry for killing. But Armstrong guns are of course excellent units and quite a lot easier to get early on
(Apologies off video topic) Have you taken a look at the current work on the LotRs Attila mod in progress Dauntless Days? I saw they are looking for experienced testers, would be neat if someone as experienced as yourself threw some feedback their way to make the finished product as good as possible.
I used almost the same build. Just one gatling gun. 6 armstrong 4 imp guard cavs 6 imperial guard inf 2 royal marine. The other army is i swap cav with tosa rifleman. I only use 2 offensive army 1 under daimyo 1 under his heir. I occasionally make a generaless army with 8 imp inf, 6 katana kachi, 2 bow ki, and 4 armstrong to def chokepoint castle. Now controling half of japan in legendary difficulty as sole imperial vanguard. Kinda fun because there is ton of big battle with 3-4 stacks of enemy hahaha
18:34 look at the space between the group in front that the cav is firing at and the main group behind. What are those floating lights, are they ghosts?!?
Whats really missing is a big ass navy with a big load of cannons with explosive shells. Now that shit is devastating. And the biggest counter to a solid army, like this one, and to armstrongs...
Yeah when you have a big offshore fleet it’s a beautiful firework show combined with the armstrongs, makes offensive sieges against large garrisons actually feasible in the late game
I feel like it's closer to a 9 or 9.5/10! A few point sof criticism for this army: For one, as mentioned, armstrong guns in general are better; You miss out on one Royal Marines (Maximum cap is 3, not 6) And I do believe that gatling guns are pretty overrated. The kills in which you achieve with gatling guns can more often than not simply be done with normal rifleman, or armstrong guns. And for the former, your increase of vulnerability to siege and cavalry is less pronounced. I'd have probably cut down gatling gun down to 2 instead of 4, and added 1 armstrong gun and 1 gatling gun imo!
As for the best army possible in FotS, I'd probably lean towards a Shogunate army: Shogunate Guard Cavalry is a cut above all other cavalry (It's a boosted Yari Ki), so it has the speed, and the strength to run down enemies; Shogunate forces also have access to the French Marines, which are statistically better than the British ones (Better ranged stats, worse melee stats)
I think sending out the cav to deal with artillery that was out of range was a bad idea, Ive tried the stagger infantry with gatling before but the micro to stop friendly fire is a bit much, putting the cav behind the gatling guns and a marine on either side with the infantry on the flanks is what I would have done, the cav and respond to high pressure in certain parts of your line fast and fire over heads better than being a harrassment force.
The gatling guns are just a prestige weapon really. Yeah theyre deadly as hell but for what you have to go through to get them its just not worth, whereas you can be recruiting armstrong guns from like turn 30 and slaughter all comers
That army is a 8/10 max. -No gattling needed -More Armstrong would be better -Its mandatory to see more than one foreign infantry. The cap is 3 per nation, and 1 extra Royal marine from event, I believe. So 9 or 10. Not 2. -At that point is probably better to have a second general for more constant gangbatte
It was more of a compressed checkerboard... Which is more common with the empire in any case. I think the FF mitigation is more effective in WH, so you have a bit more freedom with regard to formations. It would be nice if you could form company level infantry squares with infantry units, or use canister shot with cannons.... But I don't know how you'd overcome that with traditional units.
Would have been better without the gatling guns or the guard cav. 8 Armstrong Guns and 11 line infantry is the best army for this sort of battle, but I understand this might be boring.
Not a big fan of gatling guns. Yes they are cool and deadly, but they are not very dynamic. I would rather have either more armstrong and a couple extra elite infantry. They are easier to use and are still deadly in almost all situations.
FOTS imo proves that CA (well the CA team that made FOTS) is capable of making a WW1 game, doesn't even have to be a proper TW title, just a WW1 game. Of course, i think it might end up being really frustrating and not fun at times, but that's trying to balance WW1 for ya.
I don't know about that. The Western and Italian fronts were dominated by trench warfare but the eastern front was far more open and mobile. How would they properly simulate that? A map encompassing most of Europe, the Middle East, USA and large swaths of Africa and east Asia with a large number of settlements might just break CA if they tried to make it. The Great War mod for Napoleon shows that a game with soldiers using bolt action rifles and machine guns would make cavalry useless. Tanks would be a solution but they would only make sense in the late game. Having them at the start would not be historical and not to mention imersion breaking. The ultra accurate and deadly artillery would be a big problem as well. I just don't think it would be possible. They barely got linear musket warfare right.

Hills, as delightful as they are, are not always available in this game, that's why they're a delicacy worth cherishing
The guard infantry also should charge the wooden cannons. Not shoot them.
after playing with gatlings for a few hours i gotta say, 2 in one army are more then enough, have a stack of 16 units: general, 2 gatlings, 4 armstrong, 9 line inf.(3 foreign marines, 2 republic guard and 4 republic inf.) and i smash anything and everything. the otehr 4 slots where for some cav. but as a republic, i was lazy to research carbines and not in the mood to micro revolver cav. probably will train yari cav when i get another armor smith province xD
I agree this is pretty much the most optimised army possible
No hill to begin with, but there sure was a mound of enemies at the end there o.O
I think one of my gripes is that the AI is so dumb in these total war games. They've really bumped up the abilities of the AI in recent games and im excited to see that implemented in future gunpowder age games
With all this fots content I'd love to see a campaign of it on legendary 🥰
Imo even though the gatling guns are a bit less efficient, the shock and morale damage is in practice extremely useful; just by putting a lone gatling gun in the middle of your formation you can inflict massive morale issue on the enemy before they even get in range of your infantry for killing. But Armstrong guns are of course excellent units and quite a lot easier to get early on
(Apologies off video topic) Have you taken a look at the current work on the LotRs Attila mod in progress Dauntless Days? I saw they are looking for experienced testers, would be neat if someone as experienced as yourself threw some feedback their way to make the finished product as good as possible.
hello, just wanted to ask how you manually man the gatling gun at 14:08 .. thanks!
...he presses the button? You can see it quite clearly.
Wooden cannon: don't disrespect me!
4:15 omg thanks 400hrs in didnt know that and always did troops mixed with cannon
What are those floating lights, are they ghosts?!?
i use 1 general, 4 cav revolver, 4 arty and the rest just inf..... Seem your army is good composition.... i will use this formation
That's not a battlefield, but a slaughterhouse here !
Do you have a tutorial on winning the early stage of the campaign in Total War Shogun 2?
Oh man. Grand Cathay is looking fuuuuun.
Friendly fire is hilarious in this game, just blasted a cannon into the back of the heads of the troops 4 feet away. Whoopsieeeeees, sorry Carl! :]
Wait what game is this? Attila? It just auto played as I was watching other legends videos and I tuned out and boom there’s rice hats on my screen.
Zigzag, don’t be Rickon Stark 😂
ratling guns > gatling guns
How tf is 90k income even possible in this game? Any tips how to strengthen ecomomy in early game (Jozai leg diff)
why dont you put your infantry in 2 stretched out lines? also you could do ganbatte earlier ;)
Absolutely, legend just gets bored of waiting for the enemy he always has to be pushing and exploiting something
The gatling guns are just a prestige weapon really. Yeah theyre deadly as hell but for what you have to go through to get them its just not worth, whereas you can be recruiting armstrong guns from like turn 30 and slaughter all comers
Gatling guns provide +100 style points, you just know they only put them in the game because they watched The Last Samurai
New content ideas: you react viewer unwinnable battles and predict how they play it
This is a disaster battle for the Shogun lol
What’s the finance build? 90k+ per turn?
That army is a 8/10 max.
-No gattling needed
-More Armstrong would be better
-Its mandatory to see more than one foreign infantry. The cap is 3 per nation, and 1 extra Royal marine from event, I believe. So 9 or 10. Not 2.
-At that point is probably better to have a second general for more constant gangbatte
You can only get the units of one foreign nation. The AI never recruits them so you can't bribe them either.
Gattling Guns seem to get diminishing returns if your army consists heavily of rifles deployed efficiently in 3 ranks.
they could do a WW1 total war. only tricky thing to work out would be the diplomacy.
13:53 was a really dramatic sequence.
Really thought you would use a chevron formation here, like with the empire in WH3
I would watch a "Rating your hill" video.
Try it with the cav behind the gats and more inf on the sides instead
Gatling guns, more like Ratling guns.
Would have been better without the gatling guns or the guard cav. 8 Armstrong Guns and 11 line infantry is the best army for this sort of battle, but I understand this might be boring.
Any mods that refresh the graphics guy's??
Not a big fan of gatling guns. Yes they are cool and deadly, but they are not very dynamic. I would rather have either more armstrong and a couple extra elite infantry. They are easier to use and are still deadly in almost all situations.
what if Total war fall off the samurai, but it's actually Japan from Red alert 3?
@@jessiemeisenheimer8675You’re right, CA is just not capable of pulling this off
Iesu Kirisito, soreha Jasonu Bornu
is kinda funny how early u can get armstrong guns considering how strong they r for the whole game
The general should be renamed Ikit Yes-yes!)
Dont be Rickon Stark 😂
I wouldnt position units like that, gatling guns will friendly fire the flanks
Gosh seems like Total War games only became A LOT WORSE or just stagnated for such a long time
Tosa rifleman doomstack when? watch enemys melt
13:50 absolute pleasure
too bad we can't see a good hill in action this time
Maybe i should consider to buy FOTS🤔
If you haven’t bought it yet do it now it’s easily the best historical total war
@@jamiemcerlain5897 How about ROTS?
So much levies supercrindge
no hill :(
great
Honey, wake up. TW daddy has uploaded 🥵🥵🥵
Stop pretending you got a honey. Unless your honey is fat and hairy. In which case, maybe I could be your honey
Nice
LEGEEEEND!!!!!
