omg!!!! "Let these people go!!!" They have kept this island as their home for 200 years. There are other islands to develop (destroy), look at what happened on Jekell Island, they came, they built, they left. These people have preserved a part of our countries history. They deserve to keep it and be left to continue their proud heritage and and community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a descendant of slaves some of whom were enslaved on the Georgia Sea Island. We are Geechie/Gullah descendants who are scattered, but retain our history. Thank you for this documentary and for your support of this community. They are a national treasure who should be supported and their history in every text book. This is a travesty!
My whole mothers side of the family is from sapelo, and I'veplayed in the Reynolds mansion when I was a kid; I've asked them about this and they said they are NOT gullah geeche, and told me why. We need to accept who we are, and not be ashamed of what we came from.
..property taxes are the most evil, unfair type of "tax" there is...you pay what they say, or else...they take your land..regardless of your ability to pay...very discriminatory toward the poor, people who have inherited their places, minorities, many others..this is happening to the old-time generational inhabitants of Appalachia...we can't afford to pay the taxes the rich new residents from Atlanta and Florida do, so we can't afford to live here anymore...and we are told how "low" our taxes are every time they raise them...I really feel for the residents of Sapelo Island.."cultural genocide" is right...sell the land to richer folks who can pay the high "taxes"..in the case of Sapelo, I believe the State wants the residents to lose their land, so THEY can buy it...and own 100% of the island...
Hi Kati! Just wanted to ask permission to use 1 or two very short clips (bumper stickers on cars + nature shot) from your video for a video we're making for a Sapelo Island nonprofit (SOLO)/Juneeteenth celebration, I'd greatly appreciate it
the government pays no taxes on 95% of the land, the government does not want the island updated due to wanting to keep it natural. Those people should be grandfathered in to keep their land the same as long as it stays in the family. If it is sold then it expires and taxes can revert to the county rate.
Yeah we know what this is about-Developers decided they want it & County Tax is jumping through the hoops-Despicable system-It will be changed-this corruption will not be tolerated any longer.Property Tax policy is the most corrupt. If you're not selling what difference is the selling price as far as tax is concerned? This system automatically ensures a property must be sold to pay the tax for it's "potential" value-outrageous.This group should form a corporation-May not have to pay tax at all.
So Jon-What development company are you working for? Sounds like you know a little too much more about it than you should.Your comment sounds like junk to me. We're getting rid of your kind of junk now-Nice try though.
They own 3% of the island. Be accurate. 97% is owned by the State of GA. It's not "their" island. Also, I wonder why an "island community of 50 people" would have deadbolts on their doors.
So WHAT if the developers want it? 97% of the land is owned by the State. In order for developers to build on that land, the land must be assessed. As it turns out, the 3% land left that people actually live on has not been assessed properly in quite some time. That's life. What's wrong with developers, anyway? Did you build your house? Did a land developer? Companies buy areas and then build houses that other citizens buy. The land they own must then conform to standards.
That's right. But only 3% of the island. 97% of the island is owned by the State of GA. Developers will build on the land and likely have some nice summer retreats or permanent homes for tax paying citizens who are not raking in the welfare dollars. You own land? You pay taxes. That's how it works.

Maybe we can find a way to support the island, this really touches my heart.

It is their land leave them alone!!
really so similar to the Nazis stealing the Jews land, business, life and history during WWII, well our government has not actually killed anyone yet
No, sadly, our land is NOT "ours"...we rent it from the Government, and if we don't pay our rent("taxes"), they take it... :(

There are 50 people left living on 3% of the land. A few acres. The rest of the island is owned by the State of GA. Time to move along now.

Bless your rotten black little heart.
