Thanks Leo. Missed this video when you released it - very interesting. Yes, definitely some (unnecessary) awkwardness in areas of the UI and room for improvement there. And the AU simply doesn’t auto size itself correctly as you pointed out. You’re right: i can’t get the volume envelope Decay modulation to do anything either. Hopefully Wadorf make some fixes and improvements along the way. Personally, I’m loving the way it sounds though, but, as you said, that’s subjective. Cheers.
I'm glad you did an honest review of this. I've been playing with it for hours. There are some really nice places you can go with this. Takes a while to get there though..
I had already decided to pass on this one but your review revealed a lot of problems I wasn't aware of. Seems like a beta quality release. Thank for your honest review Leo!
…this was a harsh critic. Do not think the synth deserves it so hard. Bought it, explored it the weekend, love it, sounds really great. 8 different oktaves played by 8 different synthis in one synth, nice it is!
Thanks! Some valid points You mentioned. One point I‘m other opinion - preset management, I like it, that no preset is loading when I choose a soundset, it helps that I don’t loose the changes of my work on the actual preset - which nerves on newer apps. A critic to the app from my side: the resolution of the Wave Env - could be smoothed with smoother transitions from one wave to the other - I understand it only as reminiscence of the original tool. I like the Microwave 1 app a lot.😊 But valid critic is never bad either. 👍🏽🧔🏼🙏🏽
It is a good deal for 12.99 no doubt. Just bought it..I still like Nave.. wish that was auv3. The main concern is how Waldorf completely abandoned Nave. It sounds good and the gui problems are minor.
@@soundformore well I’m surprised by the Waldorf video….from the CTO he is raving about this product…how it identical in sound to the hardware and goes on to explain that digital hardware synths are just software running on special computers called “Roland or Waldorf “. SHHHH….dont give away the secret…..that’s what I was driving at its 12 bucks and sounds just like a hardware Waldorf. I may but another synth later oh yeah I already bought it….it was 20 bucks that oberheim auv3 that is really good. Anyway check the video it’s on RUclips on the Waldorf Music page. I am confused I had not seen this before but it says over 4 years old on the App Store. and everyone is talking about it? Those new Waldorfs look sick but they can be an app …..my m4 iPad with high end DAC made in England has better sound a more sophisticated processor a way better tandem oled screen it is about the same but the software is way more versatile.
Thank you Leo I agree the app will need some tweaking and then it will become something well worth a play Maybe it’s not quite your cup of tea we know you love presents with arpeggios but the bottom line is this synth may surprise you with an arpeggio or two of course
Yes! Just discovered my favorite audio app tutorial vlogger is now making review videos! Is there a way to filter your videos to sort just the review ones?
@@soundformore how would you rate this app's "worthiness" at the current holiday sale price? Seems like it might be somewhat redundant with other synths I already have, but people are enthusiastic about this one. I can't tell if it's actually about the app itself, or only older musicians thrilled that a legacy hardware synth is being emulated, ie. for nostalgia
@SkipHunt i paid it myself As Waldorf never came back, download it, played with it, reviewed it, and now although it is installed in the iPad I haven’t run it once since the review… some nice sounds but as the review says lots to fix. But of course if you had the hardware you might be dying to have it on the iPad…. So it always comes down to preferences… big companies like Waldorf, Korg etc. should listen more to youtube creators, send them the apps to review, make them part of their teams to get early feedback more…🤷♂️
@@soundformore agreed! I was considering this one, but after watching your video, might pick up the Frost Bite 2 app while it's on intro sale. Though, Frost Bite seems redundant with other apps I already have like the FAC Alteza, Blackhole, Unfiltered Audio effects, and Cascade. What do you think?
I like the sound of this, it has a lot of character. The worst thing for me is the preset menus. When running it in a DAW where it is half height most of the time the up down arrows on the dialog is really horrible to use, you don’t know where you are in the menu and it’s easy to miss and close it by accident.
@@soundformore It works quite OK in practice when using the fingers (The iPad is a 'Touch First' device). The built-in keyboard doesn't even transmit midi so it's pretty much unusable in practice...
I like the sound . It’s “good” digital.. Strange you should have the delay, I also have an iPad Pro M1 and most apps run fine including Logic Pro/ipad . Limited polyphony is a concern though. Thanks again for the great video
We need more reviews like this that remind us, are these apps essential. Unless this provides a sound that no other app does, it's a legit question. I used to rush off and buy every new app because it was cheap compared to hardware. When I remembered it's the sound that matters, I've saved money, time and got back to playing with what I have. Anyone who thinks this is a harsh review, has not yet arrived at this revelation on the journey. Thank you sir. Well done.
Thank you, I am getting some feedback as you can imagine… yes I changed a bit my style… lots of what said in this video could be used as input for their next release… :)
I think you've given them enough input for the next update. One of the things that bothers me is that you can't set favourites for the presets. Thank you for your honest opinion.
Yup, the way I’ve been saving favorites is to select the one I want from their included preset list(s), and then maybe do a very tiny change in something, and SAVE it to my USER bank as a new preset.
I can relate to your frustration…I bought it immediately cause I have some Waldorf hardware and they know a thing or tow about synths 🙃 But this app has too many glitches that make it cumbersome It’s still sounds good - for what it does…but… It’s not a versatile synth and definitely not a must have…
Great vid, Leo. The price of this app is way to much imo for what it does. The whole app is meh. I'd rather save the money towards taking my wife out to dinner lol. I'll give this a pass
@@soundformore I’d sooner have an honest opinion, warts anatomy all! We rely on reviews to inform us and enable us to make a reasoned decision whether to buy an app or not and is especially important when considering more expensive apps. If subscribers leave because you gave an honest opinion then they’re foolish!
Wow, Leo, you’ve reviewed some much lesser apps much less harshly than you did this one. It has quirks, yes, some of which may be related to its function as a controller for the original hardware, but it troubles me to hear criticisms like "it doesn’t show a preset when you click initialize". I click init when I want to CHOOSE a preset. IMO, too many of your criticisms were "this app doesn’t do this thing just like other apps do it". I’m a huge fan, but I’m going to assume you were having a bad day with this review.
I just wanted to do an honest review of an app that came out in 2024. To me lots of the items here could be fixed with an update… other times I get told you do not criticise enough and shows mainly the positives, so tried something different this time :) 🤷♂️, shall i adopt this approach moving forward?
@@soundformore Absolutely do not change what you have been doing- you are a most valuable resource for the iOS music making community and we all appreciate your honesty. Sounds like Roland abandoning previous models of Fantom and not releasing anymore a decent workstation…
