Ryan Holiday wrote something about a month ago that upset my overly sensitive political beliefs. I became offended and unsubscribed from The Daily Stoic. Until that point, I believe listening and reading from Mr. Holiday was truly helping me be better both emotionally and logically. So instead of choosing to not be offended, I rejected all of Stoicism. Fast forward to yesterday. Someone was having a hard time and I wanted to help them see things a little clearer. I am sure you can guess where this is going. I told her to simply not be offended and she wouldn’t be. She got it too. Later I saw this video. I watched it. That is when I realized I was a hypocrite. I am now subscribed. Thank you Mr. Holiday.
@@labornurse I would interpret it in the most basic form. When you're a child and you get called a name. The harm come 100% from how you react to it. You can just ignore it and it won't do anything, or you can internalize it and it can turn into a anxiety that will rule your life, it's your choice. And you can extrapolate to the rest of life.

Ambition that causes profound positive change comes from a place of curiosity and exploration. There is a love and an embodiment of the craft. A view of beauty. A desire to improve and not a desire to be the best, there is no cap or limit, there is always more. Just continue exploring.
What I understood is : Learning not to conquer but to learn more about the art, and being involved in the journey > learning to conquer and trying to reach a destination, an end. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think you have to realize when you are putting ambition on a pedestal. I don't necessarily think there is anything wrong with having ambition. Nor do I think there is anything wrong with striving for greatness. However, doing so to the point it becomes your obsession, and you cannot enjoy anything else, when you detach from everything else in pursuit of your ambition, that is when it becomes a problem.
Good interview. Steven Pressfield is one of my favorite authors as well. But I have to admit he’s not the best at being interviewed. His strength is his writing. He’s best known for War on Art but his fiction is top notch. “The Profession, Virtues of War, Gates of Fire , are simply life altering great. If you want the best explanation of Stoicism don’t listen to him speak, instead read his books. Every generation there are a handful of great people born who will literally change the world. Alexander was one. Some people are simply better than others. It’s a simple fact. Marcus Aurelius was another. Though average people like myself may not be that high caliber we can still aim to be the best we can be.
I have no idea who this author is but I sense he's pretty smart. The way the interviewer made the author open his eyes and be like "wow what the fuck, I'm actually in a real conversation right now" made me feel 👍
Great video but you forgot to mention that the curse of ambition is also linked to Memento Mori, in fact they kinda go hand in hand. Indeed, because people know their time is limited they naturally incline to seek greatness in order to be remembered throughout time. This was obviously true back then back in ancient Greece with myths about Heros such as Achilles, it is said that a Greek's worst fear was to be forgotten. I've heard many entrepreneurs state that their ambition was partially fear-driven of being forgotten and they wanted to leave something behind to be remembered. This could equally be true about people who seek fame and celebrity status, as John Green pointed out: "If we all wanted to be rich we would become investment bankers but instead we seek out fame to bring awareness to ourselves, to be remembered... to be great".

The need to conquer the world starts with passion the joy of getting what you want, upon having it, only to realize the need for more. And it becomes difficult to stop like smoking cigarettes....
This is completely congruent with the stages of life in hinduism, when at the end you retire from the world and pretty much live as a monk meditating on the oneness of the universe
When you look for succes (in an ambitious way) you finally realize there are always places beyond that, that you have to reach for. Its got to be literally exhausting... Do we know what is real succes?
Amor Fati is the flip side of what he is talking about. In the thor movies it's about a boy proving him self a man and many Amor Fati moments happen. At the end he no longer following the man he is supposed to be but the man he is.

Welcome back buddy.
It's always a good thing to be self objective ie., aware. Great story!

How do you interpret "choosing not to harmed"? Is it turning problems into opportunities?

"The War Of Art" is amazing. Stellar stuff here.

Ryan your messaging, succinctness, story-telling, articulation and duration is brilliant.
Steven Pressfield helps us look in and contemplate the depth of ourselves. Thank you.
What drives your ambition is it's foundation.
With the right reason and genuine dedication, everything else will fall into place eventually.

Self-mastery is the ultimate form of power.
I will look forward to his books later.
Great vid
What a great talk I'm speechless
GREAT conversation, Ryan & Steven. Thank you for sharing, I needed this.

A problem or a passion like no other
Fascinating, truly 🙏 and brilliant, too
Finally, something new and great. Really nice video, i was waiting for something like that
Excellent interview with a Master of the Art of Art!

awesome content
is there a longer version of it?
Let Steve do the talking!!! Gosh
Haha we could actually see in Ryan's eyes that he was trying different ways to put forward his point.
RIP KOBE
“I have conquered the need to conquer the world.”
This is seriously an eye opener for me..what is life lmao
today is friday and it feels like I am sitting with the wise ...
Conquer yourself first....

Having "enough" and not waking up at 3am fretting over your problems
To be happy.
Ryan are you ever going to do an event or social get together in Austin? asking for a friend lol
Did you stop your "Ryan Holiday" channel?

Ambition when driven by unchecked, insecure, self-centered EGO becomes a great problem to the individual and their sphere of influence.
"aaahh"
Allow your guests to speak though
This was hardly an Interview... What a waste, dude talk so much just learn to listen
Everyone cried out to be heard differently.
I noticed the same thing ! What a pity! I mean, let's keep your guest talking, wasn't that the point?
Hold back a little Ryan...
Enough, the knowledge of enough.
Ryan, with respect, why interview if you are to speak so much?
... Isn't conquering the world kind of a pathological stance to take? How about not being a mark, instead?
Somebody will rule the world, why not be you? I think it's a very sane ambition.
