The arbitrary item placement and camera recognition is amazing. You build something on the right end to feed them in and have it running all day long. Simply incredible.

I'm just glad when you showed the F1 I used my Amex because it broke within a month (and dozens of others have reached out to me about theirs doing the same) and they ghosted me but Amex had my back.

@@peterbrownwastaken IR diode dies on some fast, they police the Facebook group too deleting posts with the issue, fortunately I screenshot a ton for the Amex dispute.

Aww dang I can't reply "can I has cats?". But your excitement for this new laser reminds me of when I upgraded my old sewing machine. There were so many more stitches and cool features, and I found out I could embroider on it!

If anyone wonders why you keep the cover down, look at what that laser does to metal. One stray reflection. And you lose vision before you can blink.
Do not mess with high power lasers, you only have two eyes and this will help with changing that.
Stay safe out there, just because a lot of cheap laser engravers out there don’t have a shield does. Not mean it doesn’t need it.
In my uni, they banned laser cutting mirrors unless it was mirror acrylic and covered in the protective paper

Especially since your brain has a system for ignoring gaps in your retina. You can't see the gap where your optic nerve is, and that same "gap ignoring" means your brain ignores spots of laser damage.
So by the time you notice vision damage, it's already way way too late.

Could you do a super light pass with this laser on 3d-printed stuff to smooth out the layer lines? like for mostly flat stuff lol
I doubt it, unless the filament happens to be laser-safe
Some materials cannot be safely laser cut/engraved becauase they give off dangerous fumes or are prone to catching fire
I'm not sure. I'm getting my hands on my first 3d printer next month.
I was familiar with fiber lasers and their capabilities, but I was surprised at the conveyor capabilities! I feel like this is fulfilling a promise of technology that hasn't been filled in a long time...

peter has slowly transitioned to making practical things made of wood, to practical things made of resin and wood, random stuff made with resin and other stuff, to stuff made purely to look cool with resin with other stuff dipped in, to laser carving stuff and filling it with resin, to laser engraving. cant wait to see whats next

I had no idea they could do the engraving in color! That was really fun to watch. I hope to see you make more stuff with the engraver and incorporate it into some of the other fun experiments and things you make.
It's not so much a laser thing as it is a Stainless Steel (and Titanium) thing. They form oxide layers at different thicknesses depending on heating, so you can do this with a torch if you're careful.
Looking forward to what you can whip up with the laser anodizing thing!

Clicked the link at the start to see just how much the F1 Ultra costs (well outside of my price range), and after seeing the features you showed off I can say the price is entirely justified for anyone who can put it to use. That thing is insanely cool.

Seriously though, that's such a neat technique; it's basically a more controlled version of flame painting, and since the color is being added to engraved metal rather than directly on the surface layer, the color might actually be more durable. It'd be interesting to test out, at least.

Can I has cats. I’m sooooo close to pulling the trigger on this. I guess fiber is definitely well above diodes and CO2s. Between the color in stainless, the amazing detail in coin and the conveyor table will auto alignment for engraving, this is a no brainer. Then again, like computers when they first came out, they develop so quick that your state of the art machine could be obsolete by next year. 🤔💭

I suggest you to try the color engraving on titanium, or niobium, if you can get your hand on it

How about a frosted glass globe (or similar) lampshade or ceiling lamp cover with a colored metal framework? Maybe replicating a piece of art or just some fractalesque pattern.
VIDEO EDITING:
You can get a color white balance card and put it in the chamber with the shield down. Record a few frames and without changing any lighting remove the card and set up for the filming with the shield down. You then color-correct off of the sample frames image

That is cool... seen a couple other creators with one of these recently, and its ability to engrave metals is amazing... I have a GlowForge Pro CO2, it is phenomenal, and have gotten its money's worth, but you have to use a spray coating to "engrave" metals. It's just not the same as etching. Adding one of these to my wishlist...

When in a room operating a laser, always where laser rated eye protection, even if there is a cover. A stray flash with lasers at these strengths will blind you permanently, even just a little bit of it. You know if you have your laser shades on. The machine might run with the cover not on. Don't risk it.

I run a 1200 Watt fiberoptic laser for work. We cut thru up to inch thick mild steel like a hot knife

I know this is morbid and we all don’t want to think about it. However what if you did up an urn, as a project. You could incorporate both wood ( the part I love most )& resin that gets more views. It might be the last ride you ever take, why not do it in style?

I am adding this here - Can i has cats? - since I seem unable to reply to the pinned comment as there are already so many replies in the list. For the coloring, I assumed it was a color-interference thing in the way butterfly wings work rather than heat temper colors, though I guess direct heating is a lot easier to do.
