    Congratulations on getting Scottish Highland Cattle !!! ( My favorite breed of cattle ) I used to follow an annual national beef carcass competition. The winner over several years was a Highland crossed with another beef breed. The long hair if groomed ( combed ) should yield a great fiber that could be carded, spun, and woven, knitted, etc. Best Wishes.

    The Longhorn is the Highlander of the South. It can graze on scrub, has very lean meat, with lower cholesterol, good calving ease, and generally a very docile temperament. And it has those horns, too.

    As soon as I saw the thumbnail I clicked so fast lol. When I get a cow, it's gonna be a highland. I love them looking so shaggy just like Molly, my Old English Sheepdog. They look so awesome with a little dusting of snow and they're known to be docile too. Very awesome video folks. I didn't know they didn't need to milked, that makes them even cooler. Thanks for the info guys. Cheers, Chad.

      My exact thoughts! I went with Dexters. Polled option. Great meat and milk. Hardy, friendly, good browsers. Etc etc. But my husband dreams of Highlands for the same reason as him, such eye catching cattle.

    The horns are not a problem with a station unless you are pulling them in. The cow knows exactly where those horns are. They will get into the station no problem. My cows are part highland. I livecon the dessert. In the summer they are sleek and short haired. In the winter they fluff out. Not as fluffy as a full breed, but charming. Personality is calm and cool. Best of luck!

    We at The Laughing Tractor Farm have been raising registered highland cattle for 3years in WV and love them. Slower growing yes but don’t really cost any more than other cattle. We grass feed only and the removal of using grain outweighs the cost of a extra year to grow out a steer. Hay cheaper than gran in the long run.

  • @betpatpatten3840
    @betpatpatten3840 3 года назад +4

    The fact that they’re smaller than the other breeds of cows that do usually find on a home stead. Also they don’t eat as much grain etc. They can survive foraging for them selves eating stuff other cows won’t eat. (Smaller grain bills)

I’m still thinking Dexters will be best for me (which I discovered thanks to an old video of yours about them btw). Plus I don’t think I’ll have space for a seperate beef herd. I the heritage style beef shorthorns are a great homestead beef animal. Though for handling I think disposition is more important than size. My bull I had for the last 2 years came when he was called and is halter broke.
    I like shorthorn because of the marbling and build, which is important on a grass only operation.
    Also I heard on your last podcast about the goldfish/shark analogy, which I haven’t really seen as my beef animals have always had a better disposition than the dairy cows I’ve worked with. Except for a Brown Swiss cow my friends had, she probably had the best disposition of any cow I’ve ever met. Think giant pet that’ll sneak up on you and randomly like the back of your head.

    I love following all homestead things. Would love to start one but too old. Wish would have done it when I was younger. My husband just turned 82 I will not tell you my age. But this is to let you know I watched a lot of stuff wishing I could do it but it's impossible. I do can and garden. Man been so a lot of my own clothes and my husband's. I was raised as a child working on farms and ranches love to ride horses but as I got older and had my own children jobs take over. If there would have been the internet like there is now I probably would have done it. I just had no clue how to start. Now for why I'm writing.
