Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, feature films, and merchandise.
Naka, Ohshima, and Yasuhara developed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to provide Sega with a mascot to compete with Nintendo's Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of video game consoles in the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games, plus the spin-off Sonic Spinball (1993). A number of Sonic games were also developed for Sega's 8-bit consoles, the Master System and Game Gear. After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems. Takashi Iizuka has been the series' producer since 2010.
While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. Games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman's schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. Later games added a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, have starred in spin-offs. The franchise has crossed over with other video game franchises in games such as Mario & Sonic, Sega All-Stars, and Super Smash Bros.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.6 billion as of 2023. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 game, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.

The title describes how I felt when I saw the SonicxShadow generations trailer. They finally made a Shadow sequel. Which I didn't expect at all because you know that game's considered a bad one. As someone who enjoyed playing Shadow the hedgehog on ps2, I actually really dig it and I'm happy and hyped honestly! I guess the fact that Shadow content is being brought back also gives me hope that storybook content and Mephilies might get some love too sooner or later which is nice honestly.

I have been feeling the same ever since I saw the ending of the Sonic 2 movie. My teenage self, who dyed her hair with red highlights in high school, is giggling like nuts .
Imagine if they brought Black Doom back in order to advertize him appearing in Sonic Movie 3
if they're bringing black doom back, make him more of a dangerous threat and more well written but still be pure evil, and maybe a voice actor to make a sinister voice. regardless, i still like him for him appearance and that he has a major role in the sonic lore

I find it absolutely baffling that nearly TWO DECADES after the game’s release, people can not realize that the events of 06 still have happened, as they all lead to a version of Sonic and Elise blowing out the Flames of Disaster in the timeline. Even other games keep the bad possible futures like Stardust Speedway Bad Future
Yeah they keep referring to the fact that blowing out the candles wiped everyone’s memories and “reset the timeline”

Wait I'm a little confused, did blowing out the flames not bring us back to the beginning of the game? How could the events of 06 happen if by the end of the game were right back where we started and it ultimately meant nothing?
@@Khyon521I mean, resetting the timeline in that did erase their memory but people who say 06 isn't canon cuz of the ending obviously doesn't know how time works
06 is canon, eventhough the events technically never happened after the flames got blown out but they still happened cuz time still goes forward, whatever happens, happens so I never understand why people say it's not canon when it is
When Sonic 2 came out Jim Carrey said that he is retired and would only come for a new movie if the script was writen with gold inc, so Sonic 3 must be at least a masterpiece
My best guess as to how they got him back is that he'll also be playing Gerald in the movie so he'll get to show off some of his dramatic talent instead of just comedic

I think what happened is that not only the character may grew on him but the story also must be pretty good

If the script is really good and has value in the work and dedication, then it is worth the role. Otherwise, no amount of money is worth a second of time.
Man I'm so excited for the Shadow campaign in Sonic x Shadow Generations. I can't believe Black Doom is coming back after nearly 20 years.
It's taken to decades now but my Favourite character and hedgehog is finally getting the love he truly deserves Hopefully they will turn him back to being the mess understood hero

I find it clever that this Game will drop the Same Year as Sonic 3, I Love Generations, it’s one of my Top 5 Favorite Games in this Franchise that it helped me want to learn More about Sonic and its Lore and to this Day I have Found Memories of It, I can see some Issues with this Special Edition of Generations but if we get to explore places and Enemies from Shadow’s Past like Adventure 2, Heroes, Shadow 2005, and 06 then I would be Happy.

They didn't outright confirm anything. I don't think they legally can either.
@@ChannelPup SEGA owns the rights to Live and Learn. Crush 40 is a band started by one of their own composers. Even the creator of Escape from the City has gone on record to say he doesn't own the rights to his song, as he only got paid for the initial gig.
So yeah, SEGA has gotten more careful with their music ownership after the whole MJ debacle. They can use it in the movie. Whether they will or have Crush 40 make an entirely new track is another story.

Adventure remakes and Sonic P-06 remaster would go HARD.
Something substantial to me about Sonic X Shadow Generations is that despite how much we've complained about Sega relying on nostalgia for over a decade to sell their games, this is one of few instances the nostalgia is something to be excited for, mainly due to it being a less represented and popular era of Sonic.
Disregarding Shadow, I really hope this is a sign that more 3D Sonic remasters are on the way. While this and all the references in Frontiers are appreciated, I don't want these games to keep referencing the past while disregarding the source material.
Exactly, I really want something new with the stages and characters, that’s it.
Actually I'd like to see some levels and characters from secret rings, advance games, rush games and black knight being referenced and brought back. But of course new content is always more interesting.

As someone who isn't the biggest Shadow fan... I'm just glad to have Generations on the Switch with new content.
I am so happy to see my boy shadow the hedgehog finally get some recognition again and also a bonus seeing shadow the hedgehog being in sonic shadow generations makes me so happy 😀 in my opinion.
Man, I'm extremely excited for Sonic x Shadow Generations this year cause I can't wait to see Black Doom and the Biolizard. And I'm super excited for Sonic Movie 3. I can't wait to see Shadow in action and the return of Jim Carrey.

I’ve got a good feeling 2024 will be a good year to be a Shadow fan, now I just hope Shadow’s characterization will improve, I’m a broken record with this but I just seriously want Shadow back to how he was in 06 cause I stand by that that was when he was at his best, but I’d even accept it if it’s just how he was in Prime cause while there were some things about Shadow’s writing in Prime that rubbed me the wrong way, it was still a big step in the right direction for him and I’d definitely be fine if he’s more like that for a while but I just want the full on hero Shadow who’s legitimate friends with Rouge and Omega, even if he may not admit it to not seem too vulnerable, and who respects Sonic as an equal back

The cutscenes in Sonic Generations is a lot more pixilated than what was shown in the trailer. I could SEE the pixels on Modern Sonic in some spots, such as the stripe on his shoe
The biggest thing im excited for in X shadow is just to see how they touch on shadow's death in SA2, maybe explain what happened between that and heroes, and just all the weirdness between there, Seeing a modern shadow actually acknowledge his "death" would be rad.
Of course it's his year because he's the most popular character

I believe that it will not contain ANYTHING from Sonic Forces because this ties into Sonic Generations, and as it's been established, that's BEFORE Forces.
Yes, but Crisis City is from the future also, just an alternate averted one, so Forces isn't actually out the question based on the timeline alone.
How does Sonic Frontiers look ugly? I think it looks really good.
There isn't really any cohesion between the generic metal platforms and the natural earthy environments, and it doesn't help that they're constantly popping in and out. It's striving for realism yet it looks like assets dumped in a playing field. That's just my two cents. I adore the game but I think it's one of the worst looking Sonic games as far as art direction goes.

Yooooooo it’s Year of Luigi, but for Shadow! It’s Year of the Shadow!
I don't like Sonic Generations' story and I think It has tones of missed oportunities. However, I think changing this kind of stuff is disrespectful to the original. It's a matter of respecting the original artistic vision. If you want a game with a better story, go play a game with a better story. Believe It or not, there are people who like the way Generations handle It's story.
This remaster is a smart move because It more like a bundle. You buy Sonic Generations and you get both the original Sonic Generations + "Shadow Generations" that is kind of a different game. It's almost like a collection
Even with that said, there's still room for change in the localization, since they're not always reflective of the original text (which is a bad thing usually).
Besides, you can talk about the original artistic vision, but the response to the story wasn't really an artistic choice compared to what Like a Dragon or Megami Tensei would make (hell, Even Sonic Unleashed). It was a purely business one. I'm all for preservation of the original tale, but the scenario writer actually has to be on stage too for that to count narratively.
I love that SEGA games teaches us stuff
Sonic teaches us to stand by who we are and help those who cant
Shadow teaches us that our past doesnt define us, what we do with it going forward does
Persona games do this to
Persona 3 teaches us to live life to the fullest cuz we might not see tomorrow
Persona 4 teaches us to always accept ourselves, even the parts we don't want to admit
Persona 5 teaches us to be true to ourselves, no matter what society says, as long as you are happy, dont let others force you to be something your not
Yakuza mostly teaches us that strength isnt how hard we can punch and kick, but being honourable and having the will to show mercy, even to ones who you dont think deserve it
I hope Shadow Generations teaches us something like this instead of the recent years of "THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP CAN CONQUER ALL"
I hope in the remaster of Sonic Generations to add more stages like maybe Camelot Castle or the desert stage from Sonic And The Secret Rings and maybe more Heroes, Adventure and Adventure 2 stages
Maybe see stages from the DS games or Advance or maybe more unleashed stages, don't even have to fit the story, just more stages

I understand why people are worried about the shadow parts and why others wish a different game was remastered I’m just personally so excited to play this game again it has a special place in my heart despite the story being nothing special so being able to go on a nostalgia trip through this game with extra parts involving shadow my favourite character in sonic and as a kid I always wished you could play shadow in this game so it’s just perfect for me

i cant see them adding a new level to generations considering they'd need two versions of it but i imagine we will probably the pinball and maybe a couple new statues in the gallery?
its likely we'll be able to change sonic's shoes because they have as much history as he does and theres so many variations of them.

One thing came to my attention lately about remasters is that sometimes the things that need remastering the most end up that way because there's technical issues preventing them from being improved at all.
Like, take Sonic Heroes, which is built on a licensed engine that's now completely defunct -- you couldn't really make those changes to it without rewriting all the code from scratch.

i actually played sonic generations on the X-box 360 during my childhood and i still own it to this day along with my original X-box 360, it's great to see it getting a remaster along with shadow getting more love and attention this year. lets hope sega doesn't release it as a janky mess like they did with SA2

If they actually add content in the original generations it'll probably be some QoL like lives removed (or at least optionnal), drop dash for classic (as a base move or an upgrade) and maybe a sonic movie skin similar to colors ultimate
I'm fine with full price because I never played the original. Win-Win for me.

Sonic Generations is a game I've played but never owned and would love to.

I never played sonic generations so this is a huge W for me 😊
If they're really wanting to stick close to the Generations formula with their level choices here I'd expect to see two levels from each game (maybe with some mashed together?) because Generations itself technically had two levels for each game, even if they were just different interpretations of the same stage.
And I'd imagine a realistic total number of "acts" might be seven or eight as opposed to the main game's eighteen, possibly balanced out by a combat loop that's slightly slower, with tougher enemies that encourage players to use all of Shadow's abilities -- which will make each stage take a little longer.
Certainly wouldn't be surprised if we see the E-1000s and Egg Hammers from Heroes remade :)
This is just the Mario 3d world + Bowsers fury of Sonic games and im actually kinda hype for it
My guess is that they're basically making Shadow the Hedgehog 2 with Generations' concept as a template, but want to keep Sonic in the title, boxart, and have some Sonic gameplay because of the reputation of the original Shadow game.
People seem to leave out the Rivals games which Shadow was a part of.

Just think about it: they could use the ARK to tease Little Planet + after Robotnik probably certain death in Sonic 3, Stone could use his research on Sonic's quill to create Metal Sonic.

@@ChannelPup Lol, honestly same though when it comes to rail grinding i love Final Fortress more. But that's mostly because i like the rail grinding in that game, have you ever done the skip with the rail in Egg Fleet on PC version with the glide? it's really easy and fun to pull off

Honestly with potently old villains coming back in Shadows new story, I would like to ask. Is this the time that Mephiles gets to be prevalent again? Because Mephiles and Shadows fight in Sonic 06 was amazing. And getting them to battle again would be cool to see. Maybe some sort of Boss fight between the two back in Solana? Who knows. But regardless, I'm am existed for this. I love Shadows character, and seeing him in the spot light is great to see.
Hopefully it isn't like Forces where its just one level and one cutscene where Shadow beats up his villains and calls them weak. Hopefully its like what a story should be. A story that has beats that goes on until you get to the end, well portraying Shadow's character properly.
I wonder if gunplay might make a return in this game
I’m thinking they might keep Amy out of Sonic 3 in order to give some of those moments to Sonic to showcase his growth as a hero, since that’s been such a central part of these films thus far-not to mention an already stacked cast and adapting a story with a lot of moving parts.
However, there’s no reason to assume Amy won’t get her time to shine-but considering everything this film will likely be juggling, maybe it’s not the worst thing for her to wait until she can get an introduction the quality of Tails and Knuckles.
I really hope that Shadow’s Story in generations is as long as bowser’s fury 2 and a half hours long with 5 different bosses we know that black doom and biolizard are gonna be some of the bosses in the game but for the other 3 I really hope it’s Sonic, Mephilis and Infinite!
Edit: If you google Sonic the Hedgehog 3 you will see the casting and in it is Hayden Christensen as shadow coincidence? I THINK NOT! also they confirmed that Shadow Gens will be 2 to 3 hours long!
Prbly a safe bet the Shadow's campaign won't be as long as Sonic's - which I think is 9 stages and 4 bosses in total?
I'll prbly enjoy it whatever it is. I've enjoyed the vast majority of Sonic games I've played, with 06 as the only major exception.

The irony here is that Shadow often has some of the better stories in the series. SA2 and Sonic 06's Shadow story are some of the better Sonic stories overall. The Sonic movie is also going to feature this. So it wouldn't shock me if Shadow does have a pretty decent story here.
And yeah, I think we should get Mephiles as well.
I highly doubt we have the same number of levels as base Generations. I'm kinda leaning on some of Generations' stages being recreated for Shadow and at least 3 new stages, with the third game probably being Sonic '06. It would be cool if we get games that came after Generations, but I doubt it.
I don't think we're ONLY getting 3 stages, though. Again, I could see it reusing Generations stages just updated a bit. But we'll see how it turns out.
Sonic x Shadow Generations is the first time since Sonic & Knuckles that another Sonic character shared the headline of the game with Sonic

Are u all delusional or do I miss something? Generations was never an og story. Was always just a. Collection of og favorites. So how is everyone saying this is a sequel? Or that doom is the main villain here? Like don't forget it's still "generations" same as shadow and silver had nothing to do with the plot in generations. Like generations had litteraly no story then just put cutscenes to explain why u able to play these levels on 1 game.
Idk why you have to be so confidently wrong and can't just pitch in your thoughts without asking people if they're delusional. It's already confirmed that this one has more of an emphasis on story and is a separate experience that's just bundled in with the Generations remaster.
They only showed very similar things for generation so I don't think there will be any new content on the generation part
