I've had quite a few comments and both of my Buffalo Bill videos and many people either don't know who Buffalo Bill is or they are confusing him with Wild Bill Hickok. I decided to share a little more of what he did so everyone who understand how big of a showman Buffalo Bill was.

I recorded an "American Experiance" episode on her once, she was an exceptional person. Not only the shooting part, but how she fought to keep her well deserved honor on tact from lies written about her in a newspaper, they tried to ruin her name. I can't remember all the details, but now I've got to find that tape. Its also rumoured her death had something to do with lead poisoning from handling all those bullits, don't know how true it is but its a possibility.
It really would have been something experiencing all of the changes in that time period. I would have loved to have seen this wild west show in person. What a massive production it would have been. We can no understand why he has such a huge barn on his ranch. Thank you for watching Ron!

I so appreciated this! As a very young kid, I went to Ireland to visit my grandfather (first & only time as he died soon after). He spoke of seeing a Buffalo Bill show in NYC & his travels across the USA working for Union Pacific. I didn't know who Buffalo Bill was but loved my grandpa's stories of wild adventures. He absolutely loved America (came at 16 or 17 & lived here for many yrs., ) but for some reason was deported (we think it involved bootlegging). He went back home, married & had 11 kids. One of those kids was my mom who came here to live as an 18 yo. My grandpa always dreamed of coming back to see the land he loved just one more time....I spent most of my life in NYC, but recently moved to Co. where my son has lived for a few years. Not too long ago I had the opportunity to see Buffalo Bill's resting place on Lookout Mountain....much like this video, it brought back warm memories of a visit so long ago & a time I will always treasure. Who knows, he may have even been in that crowd of onlookers : )
That grave is quite a place to see. Bill was a larger than life figure and it's really incredible to think about what he did to make this show happen. Thank you for watching and telling about your grandfather. Sounds like he had an interesting life as well!

We've got some old tinplate hand me down photos somewhere of his trip to Wales where he returned many times and performed up and down the country. The pictures my dad has were taken in neath in 1904. Must have been quite the event for miners, farmers and factory workers. Interesting film 👍

Wow, that was wonderful. So much of the film was so clear. It was pretty amazing the way he put together that show with so many people. I was glad to see Annie Oakley there towards the end, my great grandfather went to school with her when they were children in Darke, Co, Ohio.

Oh my gosh, how many people behind the scenes just keeping this show- all the people and animals- keeping them all fed, arranging for transportation and places to sleep, keeping everything organized and moving. U have to wonder how the different groups of people got along, for instance , the native Americans and the troops. Just amazing, an amazing fete of organization.
That was fun to see. , I’ve only seen short clips here and there. I remember in the mid 60s my great grandfather telling about seeing the show a couple of times.
@@RhettyforHistory Could you imagine trying to keep all of those people together nowadays with today’s climate? I can only imagine what Buffalo Bill had to do to keep the show alive and well. There was a fairly recent movie about Buffalo Bill that I remember that made an effort to cover his life. Mr Cody was very active within several bodies of the Masonic Fraternity in which I have actually seen photos of him through some of the Masonic publications that I have read in the past in which Mr Cody was wearing his Commandery uniform and hat. Unfortunately I am drawing a blank as to exactly which Masonic lodge and Knights Templar commandery that Mr. Cody was a member of. (Mr. Cody was also a Shriner) To be quite honest, I was very disappointed that the movie really presented Mr. Cody the way that they did because if he was so bad, He definitely wouldn’t be in the Masonic Fraternity - Period. Rhett, I enjoyed your video showing actual footage of, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. It was quite a tremendous group of people in his shows, to say the least. I was really shocked to see that he included "horrific" scenes of battles in the shows, I would have thought people wouldn't have been comfortable seeing it. Bill was 6ft tall which is actually tall for his day. Now it seems closer to average. You're definitely seeing him here in his older age. He was about 63 in this and died when he was 70. Thank you for watching!
This is grrrrreat, Rhetty! I had to watch it a few times as I noticed more and more each time. But I had a good chuckle at horses playing 'football' - especially Cowboys Vs Indians - and shooting standing on your head! Buffalo Bill himself and Annie Oakley were real treats, to say the least! Seeing the spactators under tents reminded me of a documentary I saw recently after Lamont at Large took us to the memorial site of the Hartford Circus Big Top fire of 1944 where 168 people died.. I found out some more information on Google about it, as it was particularly disturbing. I've ordered a book about it, and I wondered if you've ever heard about that? Truly horrible. I have not heard about that disaster but it sounds horrible. Obviously these shows were not realistic at all but they were sure entertaining. I would have loved to to have seen one in person. I have been to small scale reproduction ones but as you can see these were huge! Thanks for watching again!
@@RhettyforHistory Just the sheer scale of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show would have been something special to see! And he kept it up for 30 years - now that is something it itself! Just getting the show from one town to another wouldn''t have been easy. Like the circuses of the day, they probably had to transport everything by train? So they followed the towns with railroad routes? We might think some of the acts were a bit cheesy by modern standards - but taking the Wild West into the city like that would have been the highlight of the audience's ENTIRE YEAR! Circuses of the day were a bit cheesy too - but the audience loved it back then. People would flock to see the exotic animals every bit as much as they wanted to see the flying trapeze artists - especially those who 'flew' without a net! They wanted to see anything at all that took their minds off the stresses of mundane, ordinary life. Anyone with a pronounced physical anomaly could find a home within a circus .. for a quarter you could see the fat bearded lady, or the siamese twins - whereas these days we only have to Google it. I've even heard of a little-known outlaw who had been embalmed after they hanged him - and he turned into a Mummy - and they displayed his mummified body as a side-attraction for travelling shows and circuses. Then when the circus went broke, the mummy ended up in a warehouse and, not knowing who he really was or that he wasn't just a 'prop', he ended up being purchased for exactly that - a prop for a ghost train ride at some permanent fair - maybe Luna Park or something like that. And one day he was noticed by a mortician, who examined the 'prop' and he was discovered to be a genuine human mummy, and was later identified as the hanged two-bit outlaw (sorry, I've forgotten his name) and he was finally given a decent burial. But that's the kind of thing people would pay to go and see, LOL ... Oh, great - a mummified dead body, LOL!! Or the car wreck that Jane Mansfield died in! And the Hartford (Connecticut) Circus wasn't much different in 1944. You really should Google it, Rhetty - it's a huge story, and I found LOTS of information about it including actual film-footage of it as it burned on RUclips, and there are documentaries about it on RUclips as well - plus a seminar with the man who wrote the book that I've ordered, who knows more about the history of the fire than anyone. Lamont at Large channel took us to the circus ground where it happened, which is where the memorial is to those who died. The Big Top had been waterproofed using parafin wax dissolved in diesel ... waterproof, yes - fire-proof - hardly!! Someone must have flicked a lit cigarette - no one knows exactly how it started - but a band member saw it start low down behind the bleachers - and within seconds it raced to the top. Many of the dead were trampled to death - and being 1944, most of the men were off at war - so it was mostly women and children. The parafin melted into globs and rained down on people, burning them horribly, and when the big top collapsed it came down on those still trying to get out - but 2 of the exits had been blocked to allow the Tigers and other animals to get into the big top safely to perform their act, which had only just finished. between 7 and 9 thousand people escaped - but 167 people did not, and many were burned beyond all recognition. So Lamont at Large showed us the burial site of the 6 people who were never identified or claimed. The 168th 'person' was actually a collection of unclaimed and unidentified body parts, which was buried as one person, although it wasn't really - the official figure is 168. The video footage is truly horrific ... in just 8 minutes the largest big top in the entire world was reduced to ash. Chaos reigned as families tried to find their missing loved ones ... hundreds of people had also been horribly injured in myriad ways - from jumping from the upper bleachers, to being trampled, to being actually burned. The bodies caught in the entrances when the 19 ton big top came flaming down on them were 3 deep in places - and two young children were actually pulled out from underneath the adults who had trampled them - alive! But far from unharmed. One boy interviewed spent 6 months in hospital and still has scars to this day. And then in the aftermath, people seem to have claimed the wrong bodies. One little girl has lain unidentified for 70+ years because of a mix up. The woman who was missing her 6yo child said it wasn't her daughter, while another family must have claimed her 6yo as their own 9yo daughter. So now the 6yo is very likely in the wrong grave now. It was such a story that I was researching it for two whole days - and I then I ordered the book. I think you would also find it fascinating, Rhetty! It was a real 3-ring circus - but it ended in this tragedy. Several circus members were charged and imprisoned - it turned out that they were late getting into town due to railway delays, and the fire extinguishers weren't in place as they should have been. It turned out that fires weren't uncommon from flicked cigarettes - and a fire extinguisher soon enough might easily have prevented the fire from spreading. It only took seconds for it to rip right around once it reached the top - and footage that shows this is absolutely incredible to see. They did go on to the next town and the circus survived another few more years, but with all of the profits going to the families of the dead and injured. It eventually closed down. To this day it remains one of the deadliest fires in US HISTORY! Just Google Hartford Circus Fire .. and look it up on RUclips too! Hey Rhett, update, just heard them say this flood is a one in a thousand year event. Apparently everyone was taken by surprise as the water came hard and fast. I’m watching live right now, 3 people up on the roof of their house. They rang for help at 8.00 am yesterday, they are isolated out on a farm, surrounded by bush. Lucky they didn’t fall off the roof while they were waiting. As they may have been up there all night. The army is there in the helicopter 🚁 they took the lady first, coming back for the 2 blokes. The next one they took up they had to lower back down as they got tangled. Just got him, one to go. This place is 9 hours from where I am. Just got the last guy, all safe. I have never in 53 years seen anything here but we will see, they say it is slowly moving down the coast. So far here, just normal rain back off and on all day. This is a disaster, they say there will be more deaths, when the waters receded and they can get into the homes.

Rhetty, Different time, different world. Can you imagine a show like that today, I can't. Rally great old footage. The old west is fenced or citified so no more giant herds of Buffaloes, but in my mind I see giant hills of .Buffalo bones Unfortunately, like the Passenger Pidgeon they can no longer wander the plains, but at least they weren't hunted to extinction. Hi Rhett, Just viewed this video and noticed that the part where the “Devlin Zouave “ drill part was copied by Buster Keaton in his film “The Play House” from 1921. Of course the original drill was precise the Buster Keaton drill is just so funny. I never knew where this came from but now I see. Mr. Keaton must have seen a performance somewhere during his youth. Yes he was a show man and Annie Oakley was a show girl at the western shows.
Now I really feel old. I have known since the early 70s who these folks are. But I have always had an interest in the Wild West.
I have too but there are some who have gotten them mixed or some that are out of the country and just don't know who he was.
You cant truly know old west history and not know Buffalo Bill ...

Bill was 6ft tall which is actually tall for his day. Now it seems closer to average. You're definitely seeing him here in his older age. He was about 63 in this and died when he was 70. Thank you for watching!

This is grrrrreat, Rhetty! I had to watch it a few times as I noticed more and more each time. But I had a good chuckle at horses playing 'football' - especially Cowboys Vs Indians - and shooting standing on your head! Buffalo Bill himself and Annie Oakley were real treats, to say the least!
Seeing the spactators under tents reminded me of a documentary I saw recently after Lamont at Large took us to the memorial site of the Hartford Circus Big Top fire of 1944 where 168 people died.. I found out some more information on Google about it, as it was particularly disturbing. I've ordered a book about it, and I wondered if you've ever heard about that? Truly horrible.

Just the sheer scale of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show would have been something special to see! And he kept it up for 30 years - now that is something it itself! Just getting the show from one town to another wouldn''t have been easy. Like the circuses of the day, they probably had to transport everything by train? So they followed the towns with railroad routes? We might think some of the acts were a bit cheesy by modern standards - but taking the Wild West into the city like that would have been the highlight of the audience's ENTIRE YEAR! Circuses of the day were a bit cheesy too - but the audience loved it back then. People would flock to see the exotic animals every bit as much as they wanted to see the flying trapeze artists - especially those who 'flew' without a net! They wanted to see anything at all that took their minds off the stresses of mundane, ordinary life. Anyone with a pronounced physical anomaly could find a home within a circus .. for a quarter you could see the fat bearded lady, or the siamese twins - whereas these days we only have to Google it. I've even heard of a little-known outlaw who had been embalmed after they hanged him - and he turned into a Mummy - and they displayed his mummified body as a side-attraction for travelling shows and circuses. Then when the circus went broke, the mummy ended up in a warehouse and, not knowing who he really was or that he wasn't just a 'prop', he ended up being purchased for exactly that - a prop for a ghost train ride at some permanent fair - maybe Luna Park or something like that. And one day he was noticed by a mortician, who examined the 'prop' and he was discovered to be a genuine human mummy, and was later identified as the hanged two-bit outlaw (sorry, I've forgotten his name) and he was finally given a decent burial. But that's the kind of thing people would pay to go and see, LOL ... Oh, great - a mummified dead body, LOL!! Or the car wreck that Jane Mansfield died in!
And the Hartford (Connecticut) Circus wasn't much different in 1944. You really should Google it, Rhetty - it's a huge story, and I found LOTS of information about it including actual film-footage of it as it burned on RUclips, and there are documentaries about it on RUclips as well - plus a seminar with the man who wrote the book that I've ordered, who knows more about the history of the fire than anyone. Lamont at Large channel took us to the circus ground where it happened, which is where the memorial is to those who died. The Big Top had been waterproofed using parafin wax dissolved in diesel ... waterproof, yes - fire-proof - hardly!! Someone must have flicked a lit cigarette - no one knows exactly how it started - but a band member saw it start low down behind the bleachers - and within seconds it raced to the top. Many of the dead were trampled to death - and being 1944, most of the men were off at war - so it was mostly women and children. The parafin melted into globs and rained down on people, burning them horribly, and when the big top collapsed it came down on those still trying to get out - but 2 of the exits had been blocked to allow the Tigers and other animals to get into the big top safely to perform their act, which had only just finished. between 7 and 9 thousand people escaped - but 167 people did not, and many were burned beyond all recognition. So Lamont at Large showed us the burial site of the 6 people who were never identified or claimed. The 168th 'person' was actually a collection of unclaimed and unidentified body parts, which was buried as one person, although it wasn't really - the official figure is 168. The video footage is truly horrific ... in just 8 minutes the largest big top in the entire world was reduced to ash. Chaos reigned as families tried to find their missing loved ones ... hundreds of people had also been horribly injured in myriad ways - from jumping from the upper bleachers, to being trampled, to being actually burned. The bodies caught in the entrances when the 19 ton big top came flaming down on them were 3 deep in places - and two young children were actually pulled out from underneath the adults who had trampled them - alive! But far from unharmed. One boy interviewed spent 6 months in hospital and still has scars to this day. And then in the aftermath, people seem to have claimed the wrong bodies. One little girl has lain unidentified for 70+ years because of a mix up. The woman who was missing her 6yo child said it wasn't her daughter, while another family must have claimed her 6yo as their own 9yo daughter. So now the 6yo is very likely in the wrong grave now. It was such a story that I was researching it for two whole days - and I then I ordered the book. I think you would also find it fascinating, Rhetty! It was a real 3-ring circus - but it ended in this tragedy. Several circus members were charged and imprisoned - it turned out that they were late getting into town due to railway delays, and the fire extinguishers weren't in place as they should have been. It turned out that fires weren't uncommon from flicked cigarettes - and a fire extinguisher soon enough might easily have prevented the fire from spreading. It only took seconds for it to rip right around once it reached the top - and footage that shows this is absolutely incredible to see. They did go on to the next town and the circus survived another few more years, but with all of the profits going to the families of the dead and injured. It eventually closed down. To this day it remains one of the deadliest fires in US HISTORY! Just Google Hartford Circus Fire .. and look it up on RUclips too!

Hey Rhett, update, just heard them say this flood is a one in a thousand year event.
Apparently everyone was taken by surprise as the water came hard and fast.
I’m watching live right now, 3 people up on the roof of their house. They rang for help at 8.00 am yesterday, they are isolated out on a farm, surrounded by bush. Lucky they didn’t fall off the roof while they were waiting. As they may have been up there all night.
The army is there in the helicopter 🚁 they took the lady first, coming back for the 2 blokes. The next one they took up they had to lower back down as they got tangled. Just got him, one to go. This place is 9 hours from where I am. Just got the last guy, all safe.
I have never in 53 years seen anything here but we will see, they say it is slowly moving down the coast.
So far here, just normal rain back off and on all day. This is a disaster, they say there will be more deaths, when the waters receded and they can get into the homes.

He would have been about 67 in the sign language part. Chief Iron Tail died in 2016 and then Bill was the next year.

Buffalo Bill Wild West Show toured the UK too. My Grandfather saw them perform and watched all the performers parade through the streets beforehand.

Of course the original drill was precise the Buster Keaton drill is just so funny. I never knew where this came from but now I see. Mr. Keaton must have seen a performance somewhere during his youth.
