Were you diagnosed with fibromyalgia and CFS? I have fibromyalgia; my sister has CFS. From our undertanding and research and my education, they are the same ailment on a spectrum. One is at one end of the spectrum, the other is at the opposite end. Perhaps if you were diagnosed with both, you are on the middle of this spectrum? I’m sorry you struggle with it; I’m not challenging you. I’m just confused how you ended up with both diagnoses.

My mother, who became a widow at 28 with two children, always said you should not eat your money, so she was so careful about our meals, which were nutritious but never fancy. Lots of vegetables, pasta (italian grandmother) meat twice a week and we had chickens, so eggs were always available. She was so wise. When I watch those supermarket hauls that american families post in RUclips, I drop off my chair, unbelievable all they eat. So much butter, bacon, cream, sausages, good grief, their arteries must be so clogged, that is why they cannot think straight!!!😜😂🍽

I only use the coupons when the item is on sale and almost free after coupon. I buy name brand toothpaste for free or 25 cents after sale and coupon etc. Kroger also gives coupons for produce sometimes so I use those too.

You are so right about portion control PLUS exercise. It will not only help with the grocery bill PLUS it will help your weight and health. My paternal grandmother lived to be 102 years old. She was still working in the garden in her 80's. Canned the vegetables, grew peach trees, and quilted. Her parents - my great grandmother lived to be 95 and my great grandfather lived to be 96.

I moved to Denmark,EU about 11 years ago and brought my Tightwad Gazette with me. I apply the same principles here that I did in America and my in-laws just worry themselves sick over their son not eating properly because we save so much on food. We eat healthier here because we garden, raise some of our own meat and buy good Jersey cow milk from the farm down the road. We drink about 6-7 liters of milk because dh LOVES it and he's the most active. We do drink mostly well water but milk in coffee and tea is yummy. Btw the food waste here is horrible. I love your videos and want your books but still saving pennies for them. Tfs

I buy carrots, onions, peppers, and spinach in bulk. Then I dice/shred them and store them in the freezer. I do it more for convenience while cooking. I have kids, I homeschool, I own a house cleaning business, and I am busy. So I spend a bit of time at once prepping that food, and it makes me breath easier that I don’t have cutting to do when I’m tired

You can find vaccum sealers for bags for under $30 on amazon! I got a pretty nice one last year works just as good as the $200 jobs in my opinion. Grandma used to save the ham bone from Christmas dinner and she made pinto beans with it gives it excellent flavor and you can freeze the bone of you dont want to use it right away. I eat out once a week at the most and I often have a coupon for that. I also always get it to go so I dont have to get an overpriced drink or tip. Keep in mind a few places now will charge a tip automatically if you get a to go order waffle house is just one place that does this so I just quit going. I also read somewhere that all aldi brand foods are made with out gmo's!

When I get a new recipe, or new recipe book, I review it page by page. Any recipe I think looks like something I will make in the future, I immediately make notes in the book on either halving the recipe, or sometimes doubling it. I usually use red ink, so it's easy to see my notes. I can do the conversations easily, correctly, when not rushed.

I live in a country where there is no Costco, Aldi, etc., so my solution is to buy small, I live with my daughter, just the two of us, and if I buy a lot, it goes bad. So my solution is to keep a medium size plastic container n my refrigerator, with a fresh piece of kitchen towel and I keep half vegetables, like a half an onion, a half of a zuchini, etc. that way it keeps fresh. I never buy in bulk either, I just try to look for good prices, although they are never as inexpensive as in the USA.

When you are single/cooking for one, I find that sometimes you save money by going against what we were taught growing up-by buying individually packaged food item because it lasts longer and I don't have the waste. For example, I buy the mega variety pack of chips which costs $7 or $8 for 18-20 servings. When I buy 3-4 bags of chips a month at $2-$4 a pop, I'm spending $7-$16 and throwing out 1/2 bags of stale chips, but when I buy the variety packs it lasts me a month and a half and they stay fresh until they are eaten.

Costco does have good prices on dry goods, which is mostly what I buy there. But, I do a lot of cooking from scratch and I have a family to feed. They do generally have a higher quality of product and unique things, so it's not always comparing apples to apples. I may not save anymore by buying flour at Costco, but I like the flour better there than the store brand flour.

It really depends on what I'm buying if I buy in bulk or not, I'm not fortunate enough to have a local Kroger's or Wegmans that many people do to get great buys. My local shop consists between Aldi, Walmart, Target, and Sam's Club. I always praise check before I walk out the door to do my shopping, the only store I can't get prices for is Aldi so that's always my first stop to see if it's he better by there.

Tawra, check Walmart for the brand "Pyure" baking stevia (it comes in a bag). I find it doesn't have such a strong aftertaste...because I, too, don't care for stevia.

Sherry Minkler soda was a treat for us as kids. We had it when we would go out or if pizza was delivered. We didn’t have it in the house all the time. My dad always made sure we had healthy lunches and our dinners were simple was delicious, granted as a a adult it took me a long time to enjoy top Ramon again 😁

Kids sure don't eat like we used to.
I heard a story about a woman who was visiting a friend and she took her young son with her.
Their hostess offered to make some popcorn for the boy, who was enthusiastic, of course....until he saw her pop it in a pot on the stove.
The only popcorn he knew was microwave junk and he wouldn't go near the popcorn made on the stove.🙄
      It's really sad. 🍿

One bulk place I go to is the bulk store for spices here ,it's called Bulk Barn. No idea if there is an equivalent in USA. I buy the spice containers ONCE. I will buy a nice container, glass if I can find it and then just refill at the bulk store. I just got dried parsley for 10 cents, and filled up my spice jars. I dehydrate my own as well, but if I ran out, that's what I do.Don't pay for containers over and over.

I underestimated my family's needs for parsley. I grow my own for years, but we ran out (never ask them what they want, they seldom have a clue). I will know for next year. We have a bulk store here in Ontario with very good prices. Kinda like the Trader Joe spot for bulk, but a lot bigger.

I used to be a Health Visitor ( a type of community nurse that works with families up to the age of 5 in the U.K.) one thing I found it hard to get through to parents was that milk allowance isn't just the milk you drink. Some children would never drink milk from a glass , but if they are having enough cheese , yoghurt , milk puffins etc then your child can still easily get their calcium. I've noticed that American families generally seem to allow their kids to drink loads of milk then complain at the cost ( from the various forums I'm on.) my kids have always drunk mostly water and they all have perfect teeth and no weight issues .

    • @Herschel1738
      @Herschel1738 5 лет назад +5

Dairy products aren't the only source for calcium - greens (collards, spinach), broccoli & beans are good sources. Where do you think cows get the calcium that is in their milk? From the grass they eat!
Same with vitamin C. Good sources are broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, peppers, leafy greens, sweet and white potatoes, tomatoes and winter squash.
Do some research & think outside the box.

Do not believe in grassfed beef or chicken or pasture raised eggs.
First, they are most of the time not local. They are from other States, other countries. They are not fresh when they get to our store. I have seen packages of chicken purple color instead of pink flesh.
When i eat pasture raised eggs, i have stomachache.
When i drink grassfed milk, it smells. I want to vomit.
When i eat organic or grassfed chicken , i feel tired, not well.
But most of all, when i eat grassfed beef, i have mucus at my throat at night when i sleep, i get choked, cannot breathe. This proves that there is lot of toxin in grassfed beef.
Bu the way, is it 100% grass fed animals from birth to death or only finish grassfed which means that the animals were only grassfed the lastt month of their life.?
Do not believe in media, in health providers that promote grassfed meat is healthy. And it is so expensive also.
I live in colorado. Red bird chicken is local, fresh and taste very good.
Do not waste your money on grassfed beef and organic chicken and pasture raised eggs.
      I like Organic valley eggs.

We're a family of 6 in Columbus Ohio and at our Costco, for certain things like shredded cheese, quality ground beef, some canned goods, eggo waffles, frozen breakfast sausages, organic frozen vegetables, and others - especially their brand of toilet paper, paper towels(great quality) their prices - are in fact cheaper than Aldi. I have compared prices ounce vs ounce in a spread sheet, so it IS worth looking. Their coupon savings (that you don't need actual coupons for) each month are really good deals normally. But I do Aldi for produce, milk, eggs, bread and things I don't need as much of..Just my opinion! :)

For my husband and I, I try to make three meals worth per recipe (6 servings). We eat one freshly cooked, we store one meal's worth in the refrig and 1 meal's worth in the freezer in 3 cup storage container. On the top of the freezer container I use painter/masking tape and tear off a 3inch strip and write the contents and the date with a marker. This is great. By the second time of having something we are starting to get tired of it. But it is great to be able to pull that frozen meal out of the freezer and day ahead and let it defrost in the refrig. We love those meals as they are super convenient. We use the freezer meals within 6 months.

Stupid Q- If you cook hamburger ahead of time, freeze small portions, then defrost them, how do you prefer heating it back up to go in spaghetti, chilli, etc? Do you microwave the cooked hamburger to put it in the spaghetti or reheat/recook it in a pan?

I agree on the bulk stores, most items are not that great, but I discovered if you are a member(50$) you get coupons, those items were a good price if you normally buy them. I got Heinz ketchup at a fair price with an extra $2, bucks off the 3 pk . Not worth the membership but I went with a friend who was one. As far as remembering what is a great price, people should know its the "UNIT PRICE" that matters, and how to figure that out.
Q: Jill do you find the vacuum sealer prevents freezer burn on meat? and for how long ? because you mentioned hamburger for a year. I can never get it to stay fresh for a year.

This video has a lot of the same comments as another one where people were saying that US prices were a lot cheaper, its not . If you look at our minimum wage compared to yours or the US exchange rate to the GBPound. The standard of living might be the same its the currency. Also Cheese for 2$ a pound? Mead Co., but never in NY. Aldis is my number #1 store as well. Cheapest cheese is 2.99lb, non Aldis cheapest is 4.lb and that is basic cheese like Cheddar, Not Brie, Blue or Stilton which Ive paid 12-25$ a lb for.

As someone who has lived and worked in Ireland, the UK and America I can definitely say we were much better off in the U.S. cheaper food, cheaper housing, less tax all beat having to pay for health insurance, less pay etc. Currently in Ireland, 1kg of chicken fillets is €9 (2.2lbs $11) and that's buying a big pack, chicken thighs are actually more expensive than fillets and chicken breasts with bone are more expensive again. Thankfully we can still get drumsticks cheap. Just an example.

It’s just hubby and I. I have a bunch of smaller foil takeout pans (about 5x7”). I can usually get 3-4 of those small pan’s worth of food (perfect for two) from one 9x13 casserole. I just label and freeze the extra pans. Cook once, eat 4xs and you don’t have to eat the same thing for days on end.

I was curious to see how much my drink added up to for a year. I was spending over 2000 a year on my coffee drinks,That was 14 years ago. Lol I decided to work for them, I loved it! Now today I will go in once a week as a treat.

Janice Sosh sounds crazy but it can add up - 50 a meal for dinner 20 for lunch, 10 more for Starbucks-That’s 80 a day
20 workdays a month equals 1600 per month - then add a few fancier meals a month, kids in the picture and $2000 a month isn’t hard to hit.
