PRS Torero SE - The Shredder Guitar PRS Wants You To Forget They Made!

  • In this video I showcase, review and demo my PRS Torero that has Mark Holcomb Alpha Omega (after market pickups) installed. The PRS Torero SE was a shredder guitar manufactured from 2010-2015 and I can't help but believe that PRS wants this guitar buried and forgotten. It doesn't really fit the mold for the PRS lineup, especially since it came with active EMG 81/85 pickups. This model also has an ebony fretboard, Floyd Rose 1000 installed. Totally different concept beyond the typical PRS design. This guitar competes with and blows away most modern shredder guitars manufactured today. Perhaps that's just not the market PRS is going for? Maybe the shredders our there just aren't looking for a PRS? Either way, if you can find a good deal on one of these used, I would highly recommend picking one up. They are very reasonably priced on the used market. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

    About 15 years ago, THe Grizzly wood working company sold "guitar kits." The owner of Grizzly and PRS are best buddies. The General Manager in the grizzly told me that the kits were "slighly modified prs Torero guitars," obviously unassembled. They came with cheaper but great hardware and the build quality was amazing. The kits went together like a dream.
    I wound up with 20 plus of these kits. I sold several (all with upgraded pickups and the standard hardware that they came with) and kept 6. These are daily players for me.

      How interesting. I wonder if that is a kit I purchased a few months ago. ??

      @@Ranch5150SkinWalker the Floyd Rose kit Grizzly did was quickly discontinued as it was the single biggest qty of returns for customer dissatisfaction. That is why I wound up with so many of them. Guys would take one look at a floyd rose setup video and bail on the project.. I bought them for pennies on the dollar. I know that at one point the kits were subcontract made by the same company that makes the firefly guitars now. The kits that Grizzly did without the Floyd's sold like hotcakes. The Floyd caused all the issues. I suspect when the Floyd guitars came back to Grizzly with complaints they abandoned the deal with PRS.

    I love my Torero. Tracked it down a little over a year ago. Found a doctor that bought her brand new and played it twice, decided he's not a Floyd guy and put her back in the gigbag. 10 years later I saved her from that stuffy bag.
    She now lives on my wall and currently on my lap. Funny, I never expected you too review one of these and while sitting here playing mine you finally post a review 🤣.

      @@Ranch5150SkinWalker interesting tidbit I had to figure out on my own. When they cancelled the Torero they introduced the Custom 24 Floyd Rose.
      Instead of having the standard 10" radius of PRS it has a 14" radius and the PRS \m/ pickups. Well in the core model, the SE's still come with the cheaper Korean made pickups in the rest of the SE line.

    Great video Marty! Makes me want ot hunt one of these PRS SE's down for sure. To answer the no bridge ground, EMG does not recommend connecting the bridge ground and use their 25k pots. That blob of solder would have been already on the claw at the factory during production. That said, then the passive pups were installed, a ground should have been installed. Be curious if the previous owner swapped the pots as well. Wonder what the Ω is on what's there now. But if you're not getting noise and happy with the tone, why mess with it. Nice axe!

    Great looking and sounding PRS. Kinda like a Jackson Soloist, with harder edges! The no fret markers is a deal breaker for me though, I look at those markers for reference all the time! Interesting that it has a black string bar, and chrome Floyd. Also, PRS moved the SE line from Korea to Indonesia, to save $ I guess? Quality is kinda hit or miss now - unheard of for PRS in the past. PS - Wonder how Dimarzio didn't sue Duncan for the double allen pole pieces and matte colored plastic?!

    • @Ranch5150SkinWalker
      @Ranch5150SkinWalker  Год назад +1

      I understand. String changes are easy for me. I'm so used to it. But it is tricky when changing tunings and gages. They key to string changes for me is either do one at a time or just tune all the string up to close pitch or close. Then you have to start tuning each string sharp a step or two because it lowers the bar tension. Eventually it will finally stop moving. And it will be in tune. I love the fact that they are so stable. And fine tuners are awesome.

    Have you ever tried the DW CE 24? That seems like it would be the closest to shred sound from PRS and it has Mojotone pickups Dusty Waring worked with to produce. Between the Buried and Me might not be a “shred” band but the type of progressive metal they do is probably the closest thing to a shred sound any PRS band currently has.

    Do you have any trouble with fret buzz on the low E,A,D? I have had my Torero for about 5 years. It started off great and is now buzzing bad on the low strings - pick a fret - all over. The neck relief is spot on PRS specs along with the action - 1.5mm on low E - which is high to me. This guitar should be capable of 1mm action with very little fret buzz.
