PRS Torero SE - The Shredder Guitar PRS Wants You To Forget They Made!

- In this video I showcase, review and demo my PRS Torero that has Mark Holcomb Alpha Omega (after market pickups) installed. The PRS Torero SE was a shredder guitar manufactured from 2010-2015 and I can't help but believe that PRS wants this guitar buried and forgotten. It doesn't really fit the mold for the PRS lineup, especially since it came with active EMG 81/85 pickups. This model also has an ebony fretboard, Floyd Rose 1000 installed. Totally different concept beyond the typical PRS design. This guitar competes with and blows away most modern shredder guitars manufactured today. Perhaps that's just not the market PRS is going for? Maybe the shredders our there just aren't looking for a PRS? Either way, if you can find a good deal on one of these used, I would highly recommend picking one up. They are very reasonably priced on the used market. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!
About 15 years ago, THe Grizzly wood working company sold "guitar kits." The owner of Grizzly and PRS are best buddies. The General Manager in the grizzly told me that the kits were "slighly modified prs Torero guitars," obviously unassembled. They came with cheaper but great hardware and the build quality was amazing. The kits went together like a dream.
I wound up with 20 plus of these kits. I sold several (all with upgraded pickups and the standard hardware that they came with) and kept 6. These are daily players for me.
How interesting. I wonder if that is a kit I purchased a few months ago. ??
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker the Floyd Rose kit Grizzly did was quickly discontinued as it was the single biggest qty of returns for customer dissatisfaction. That is why I wound up with so many of them. Guys would take one look at a floyd rose setup video and bail on the project.. I bought them for pennies on the dollar. I know that at one point the kits were subcontract made by the same company that makes the firefly guitars now. The kits that Grizzly did without the Floyd's sold like hotcakes. The Floyd caused all the issues. I suspect when the Floyd guitars came back to Grizzly with complaints they abandoned the deal with PRS.
I love this guitar! It’s been my main ax for years!
Sweet guitar Marty…when you think PRS, you don’t usually think shedder guitar…btw…I just picked up a 2011 MIJ wolfgang…excellent condition, still has the plastic film on the back covers…the shop wouldn’t budge on the price…I paid $1000…but I couldn’t pass on it…you know how it is bro….rock on my man 😎
Yeh PRS really don't do this sort of thing. It's super solid. Awesome man! I totally understand .... glad you got one you truly love and will play the heck out of. 😎🤟🏻
I love my Torero. Tracked it down a little over a year ago. Found a doctor that bought her brand new and played it twice, decided he's not a Floyd guy and put her back in the gigbag. 10 years later I saved her from that stuffy bag.
She now lives on my wall and currently on my lap. Funny, I never expected you too review one of these and while sitting here playing mine you finally post a review 🤣.
That white is pretty sick lookin. Mine's the dark cherry burst. Seriously beautiful and great playing guitars! Glad you dig it man!!!
That's cool man! Glad you got it out and saved it. Cool story for sure. Love the guitar. It's a great guitar for anyone IMO.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker interesting tidbit I had to figure out on my own. When they cancelled the Torero they introduced the Custom 24 Floyd Rose.
Instead of having the standard 10" radius of PRS it has a 14" radius and the PRS \m/ pickups. Well in the core model, the SE's still come with the cheaper Korean made pickups in the rest of the SE line.
@@MainPrism I remember those! Good tidbit of info man. 😎🤟🏻
Sweet pickups, Mark Holcomb once played my Peavey Wolfgang at a guitar center after he finished a demo of his axe/fx II.
Cool story man! I really like these pickups ... they have a very strong mid and clarity to them. And split they carry well.
It is a cool PRS. Remember they tried to make Eddie a striped series in the 90’s? It’s funny looking
I don't recall that! I'd love to see that
Great video Marty! Makes me want ot hunt one of these PRS SE's down for sure. To answer the no bridge ground, EMG does not recommend connecting the bridge ground and use their 25k pots. That blob of solder would have been already on the claw at the factory during production. That said, then the passive pups were installed, a ground should have been installed. Be curious if the previous owner swapped the pots as well. Wonder what the Ω is on what's there now. But if you're not getting noise and happy with the tone, why mess with it. Nice axe!
They're worth it man! I tracked down my Torero a year ago and haven't regretted it for a second. I'm a PRS fanboy admittedly but these things just play so easily it's almost not fair to other guitars!
@@MainPrism Thanks dude! I'm definitely going to search one out. I'm a bit of a PRS fanboy as well. Rock on!
Good info man. I totally forgot about that with active pickups! I do notice a slight buzz from having no ground. I am gonna run a ground wire to it. I am just happy they did nice work when replacing the pickups!
I saw one on eBay a few months ago and didn't think it was real because of the Floyd Rose. So I looked it up and saw that PRS really did make it. The Buy It Now price was under $400.
You should have played some White Lion. The guitar almost looks like Vito's Steinberger.
That's a good price man! Oh yeh I see that... totally Vito Steinberger!!!
Tap coil? Coil tap. You say Po-tay-toe, I say Po-tah-toe. The Torero is a sweet guitar. PRSs answer to the Jackson Soloist...
Was the first Prs I got and still love it to this day, however I wasn’t a fan of the Floyd so I installed a tremol no system so its set to locked so it acts like a fixed bridge now 😁
Amazing tone and playing..those pickups are over the top ! I had a PRS SE Floyd from the same era and liked everything but the stock pickups. I tried 3 different sets and finally gave up and sold it. Wish I would have known to try that Duncan set as they sound awesome, even split coil..😎🎸
Cool video. I’m not a big PRS fan, but that model would be fun to check out. My favorite part of the video is VH’s Run Around and Best of Both Worlds. 👍🏼😁
Thanks for watching man! I'm the same way. I'm not disappointed in this model at all. Ohhh and I had to throw some VH in there of course!! 😎🤟🏻
Great looking and sounding PRS. Kinda like a Jackson Soloist, with harder edges! The no fret markers is a deal breaker for me though, I look at those markers for reference all the time! Interesting that it has a black string bar, and chrome Floyd. Also, PRS moved the SE line from Korea to Indonesia, to save $ I guess? Quality is kinda hit or miss now - unheard of for PRS in the past. PS - Wonder how Dimarzio didn't sue Duncan for the double allen pole pieces and matte colored plastic?!
Yeh it's hard to play man! I need my readers lol!!! Kit is very much like a soloist. I was thinking that the other day!
I have a white torrero and love it. Neck thru.
This has got to be the most awesome PRS guitar! 🎸 🔥
As I'm watching this video I'm looking at a red one on reverb for $400! It's mine!
They're awesome guitars!
Dude I love your intro its awesome. Best music intro ever.
Thanks! Maybe I should do a lesson on it 😁🎵
I'm with you Marty I really don't like active pickups either they just sound dead to me no offense to those who dig em their just not for me
To me they just aren't dynamic enough. A bit compressed. They record great though. Cleans .... kinda sound sterile to me.
Hey! Congrats on 11K BTW!
Dude! Thanks man. I'm pumped!
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Just clickin em' off!
Nice guitar, sounds great. Excellent playing as always.
Thanks Barry! I never know what I'm gonna do or play when I shoot these videos. I appreciate ya man!!! 😁
I have one in metallic blue. My first (and last) Floyd Rose. A real hassle to change strings or to use alternate tunings.
I understand. String changes are easy for me. I'm so used to it. But it is tricky when changing tunings and gages. They key to string changes for me is either do one at a time or just tune all the string up to close pitch or close. Then you have to start tuning each string sharp a step or two because it lowers the bar tension. Eventually it will finally stop moving. And it will be in tune. I love the fact that they are so stable. And fine tuners are awesome.
I've only sampled a PRS SE and was like I want one of these unfortunately the numbers today on second hand ones are out of my realm sweet axe
Things have gotten a bit pricey. I just keep looking and looking. Eventually you find the one for the right price. It's the quest that I like the most sometimes. 😂
Great find, thanks for sharing, 🤘🤘🤘
No prob Ron! Thanks for viewing man!!!
Beautiful PRS
Thanks so much man!
Great looking guitar. Sounds awesome too! I'd never heard of it but I'm no PRS expert. Iike them though.
Thanks! It's kind of an odd bird. PRS didn't seem to promote it much. Maybe the sales were low?? It sort of goes against the PRS vibe. But I love it for that reason haha.
Hate active pickups as well really don’t understand why people like them.
Yeh they're kinda sterile IMO!
I like high output pickups and if you setup active emgs with 24v it helps with its tone and headroom for the better.
Awesome review ❤
Thank you 😎
Have you ever tried the DW CE 24? That seems like it would be the closest to shred sound from PRS and it has Mojotone pickups Dusty Waring worked with to produce. Between the Buried and Me might not be a “shred” band but the type of progressive metal they do is probably the closest thing to a shred sound any PRS band currently has.
Not yet but I'll check it out !
Nice! But.... no rock neck holder? Lol 🤣 rock....🤣🤣🤣 I know, cork! Thanks, marty!
Hahaha! Gotta keep the comments down man! Lol
Man, I‘m so with you with the EMGs, I can’t stand’em…
With great pickups this seems to be a killer guitar and that’s why I’m going to buy one and put Amber PAFs and a PushPull into it.
Thx for this very nice video!
So I finally got it, sounds awesome with the boutique pickups… thx for the test!
Same here, never liked that PRS sound (muddy to me) but you got the "sharp, crisp" tone I like out of that thing somehow. Same here 2, have the same problem with my Wolfgang roasted neck (need to stand outside in the Fl. sun) to see the brown dots so I ordered those stick-on jobs, I'll let you know if they work.
Aftermarket pickups (Duncan's) help a lot man. Thanks for the comment! Glad to know I'm not the only one who struggles with the fret dot issue!
I have two other prs SE’s with alpha omegas. They rip. I don’t care about cleans but they can do that too.
Nice man! Yeh, the are sweet with cleans. 😎
A real shredding PRS wouldt be great :)
Do you have any trouble with fret buzz on the low E,A,D? I have had my Torero for about 5 years. It started off great and is now buzzing bad on the low strings - pick a fret - all over. The neck relief is spot on PRS specs along with the action - 1.5mm on low E - which is high to me. This guitar should be capable of 1mm action with very little fret buzz.
Not yet man. So far so good. Perhaps raise the Floyd on that side a little? If not you may have to replace the nut I'm thinking. Maybe the slots are too low. ???
I had a red one of these, never should have sold it.
Awe man! That stinks! No bet that red looked great!
Includes a locking tone-nut, and a Floyd ToneRose tremolo, with knurled metal tone-knobs, and a high-gloss coat of tonepaint.
It's a good thing they omitted the fret marker inlays, those always hurt sustain for shredding.....
/sarcasm
Haha! Also includes two hamburgers and is awesome for jamming the Pentecostal scale. 😂
Funny hardly anybody admits it’s harder to play. No dots. My friend makes. One piece guitars. From Brazilian rosewood. All one piece but no fret marker he has crazy cool looking inlays. But I get lost playing it. (They are beautiful and sound great )
True! I am not ashamed to admit it. Lol 😂
I guess I am just biased .... nothing beats a Wolfgang or Ernie Ball for me...and you have the coolest collection....I dream about the Blondie you have. My new hero....Marty. You are an inspiration my friend. Love all of the content.
Wolfgang and EBMM are awesome for sure man! I was lucky to snag my red one in 1992 and my natural one about 8 years ago off eBay quite reasonably. Thanks so much for the kind words and support man!
Yes.....the best of both worlds... righteous....it's really cool. Not a music man.but great tone thanks buddy
Thanks again! It gets the job done 😎🤟🏻
Idk if they want you to forget they have a se Floyd model that's very similar
Thru body neck too?
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker set neck but it's still very similar and plays great. Im trading an Ibanez xiphos for one of these tomorrow and I'm thinking of putting in a set of dirty fingers
