At the 4:35 mark you're passing the business where my son was working. Just minutes later the bus barn took damage right next door. Thankfully, he as his co-workers were fine.
This tornado eerily reminds me of the El Reno EF3. The multivortex making it difficult to see the full size of the tornado and that you had to flee it multiple times. Very cool though.
Nice job! I was over watching the long-track at Jewell either as this was going down or right after. My car later caught fire and was totaled for reasons still under investigation - a wild day for me! Glad to see you guys made it out OK from this; it looked like it caught up to you fast.
I cannot escape the feeling of pursuit in this video. Obviously, you positioned yourself strategically; but it had the constant vibe of a chase scene throughout.
Captured one at work 50 feet away in Waterloo. The supercell positive Cg's were unreal, just like Denison supercell. It was an unreal moment to watch a 25 yard wide tornado with power flashes churning 50 feet away
Those guys get ridiculously close, although the one guy that died in 2013 was a 35 year veteran and always emphasized safety, but the worlds largest recorded tornado took him and his son out. So safety is a very relative term when rolling the dice with Mother Nature.
That was the El Reno storm, Julie, and that one broke all the rules of tornado behavior, as well as being the widest storm ever recorded. The team that died was the one of the most experienced, and had a long record of safe, careful storm research, dropping recording probes in front of twisters.
I can see how my comment might be miscontrued. I meant to say YOUR rear GoPro shots are better than many other chasers front window videos. Melanie, you are one of the best storm videographer and still shot photographers around. I have been subscribed for awhile and am always happy to see your latest work. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
I have to wonder if it was EF-3 because that's actually the max the winds were or because it only left EF-3 damage indicators due to the limited number of structures. This thing looked like it could have done EF4+.
I was watching the conditions during the day, perfect setup for supercells. Cape was ranging from 3000 J/kg to 5000 in southern and central Iowa that afternoon. Dew points were in the low 70s, and lifted index ranged from -6 to -10 in some places. If I recall correctly helicity exceeded 150 and was 200 in some parts of central Iowa, and wind shear was of decent strength too.
I had a feeling when I got up that morning that it would be a rough day. The sky had that gray-green cast to it, & we had a hellacious thunderstorm around 7 a.m. Puts you on edge all day long. Sure glad we have these folks letting us know what's going on!
@@sweetcheeks73 Interesting, sometimes those morning thunderstorms leave behind excess energy in the atmosphere for later afternoon thunderstorm to eat up and intensify.
@@codydody when the car is stopped, i like the whistling wind of the tornados. Thats not what i mean. I mean the sound of the car as it drives. Like how you stick your hand out of your car window and it feels like wind when youre outside? When the car is in motion the wind sound is the car driving
Storm chasing is where the storm chases Melanie! Stay safe! Glad there were no reports of injuries. @24:10 i thought the house was badly damaged, until i realised it was a tree snapped and come down.
Storms here are blizzards, white outs minus 50ºC wind-chill or colder. So you can't see anything. These storms are so wild to watch! As visually stunning as they are dangerous. I would like to see one. Odds are that I will not. The arctic rarely gets such weather. The wind, we know but this twisting wind is phenomenal.
I'm not a fan of the words 'wind chill'! The last couple of years in Iowa, we have had -50°, and -54°. Needless to say, I didn't venture out. I was very happy to be retired!
Hey hey hey. Hank has been on the frontlines too. Mel, Hank & Skip are all well respected & knowledgeable chasers. Three people I would trust to mentor me on chasing these things any day of the week.

Last count was 28 tornados in Iowa out of that storm system. You were on the biggest one. The record is 35 in one day.
As it first began to form?
It was looking for you guys, "You cannot hide, I will find you...."
Great coverage Mel ...

Great work Melanie! From Texas, you a great storm chaser, and quite skilled at the art of front-row cinema!
We'll keep watching, so keep it up!
This tornado eerily reminds me of the El Reno EF3. The multivortex making it difficult to see the full size of the tornado and that you had to flee it multiple times. Very cool though.
Melanie should have many more subscribers!!! She is one of the better storm chasers and has been for a long time. Fantastic footage Melanie, thanks.

Seems like the storm was doing all the chasing, making this more of a storm-flee video... :^} Neat stuff!
Remember Tim Samaras…
Wow,that was amazing ,congratulations on a Great job, i really enjoying watching the footage. Thank you and stay safe!
Those clouds are moving fast !
One of the best chase videos I’ve ever seen. Thanks
What a huge area of rotation starting at 7:15.
Storm Chasing Melanie Metz. 😄 The multiple visible vortices were wild. I’m very pleased to see you’re working safely and not taking stupid chances.
Whew! What a storm! Great job Melanie!
I love you🌹🌹❤❤❤🇮🇳🇮🇳👍
Man, I hate that when those things get wrapped in rain.
Me too. Even worse is when you have a nighttime tornado that heavily rain wrapped. Which was the case of the 1970 Lubbock, Texas tornado.
Good vid Mel. Really like the superwide GoPro segments showing how high up the RFD occlusion reached.
That roar!!!!!!! That thing was chasing you all not the other way around.
I cannot escape the feeling of pursuit in this video. Obviously, you positioned yourself strategically; but it had the constant vibe of a chase scene throughout.
Just for accuracy's sake, 175 is a state highway, not a county road.
Wow! Couldn't help but notice the ground speed on those suction vortices around the 3 minute mark....incredibly fast moving!
Expand the area those vortices are moving around in by about 3x and it's easy to see how chasers got overtaken by the El Reno monster from 2013.
That rotation is massive! The whole wall cloud was the tornado, it seems! Pretty awesomely scary stuff right there!
The whole SHELF was circulating 😨 you captured some spooky stuff!!
As always - excellent work!
I've watched your videos for a long time. My first post. Great Job!!
I recognized him, it's a bouncing tornado like in the Twister movie
Oh man this is incredible footage ,hope everyone was safe , but dang the wind noise is brutal, other than that really good video

I admire your courage but I have heard of a couple of famous tornado chasers that have died doing this. You’re braver than I for sure.

Good thing it was already outside of town and stayed rural when it became a fully-formed wedge
Best footage of the Lake city craziness I've seen yet
Lake City is my home town. Was born there.I live in Boone, Iowa now.
Was it just me or did the entire mesocyclone touch down at around 12:10?
Excellent video…you really caught the spirit of whole storm…
The 🌪 seemed dialed in on you.
Great video. If I could recommend something. Put music when showing video from on top of the car so people don't hear a constant whistle sound.
This was some incredible footage. I think your video from your rear view Go-Pro is better than many videos shot from the front of the car

great work Mel
Amazing filming!
You can see the tail feeding into the rotation. Just WOW!
Love to hear the excitement in the chasers!
Great footage. Only problem is the high pitched whistling of the roof cam when you're driving. Maybe can you mute the roof cam when you're driving?
Personally I prefer to listen to the natural whistling then those chasers that are contiuously sceaming

wow those suction vortices were wild
you didn't chase it ? hmm looks like you ran from it
Awesome footage!
Multi vortex tornadoes are always fun to watch albeit dangerous. More so than regular tornadoes.
What would you do if you had a flat tire? Or car trouble?
Hitch a ride with one of the dozens of other chasers out there with her and get the heck outta there. 😁 Come back later to change the tire.
Dang!.. Pecos who? you got come cajones. Great footage!

Looks like Lake City really dodged a bullet, hey?
I won't be driving into that tornado .
This was one giant rotating monster just dying to destroy some town!
You’re breathing like a scary movie
64 years ago to the day, I was born in Lake City
Be safe out there...
Awesome video
Didn't get close enough to see it really good. For an F-3 didn't seem like much damage, but then I'm not a meteorologist either.
WOW !
Very exciting video. Thanks for sharing.
15:32 The 🐦 chirping is always a sign that the worst has passed.
First of all what are these tornadoes even doing here. I've heard that setting off a few atomic bombs in their Center will completely destroy them.
Definitely not a scalable solution.
What do tornadoes smell like?
Being made of air, tornadoes themselves are odorless. The smells they create depend on what they hit - from what I've heard, it can be anything from freshly cut grass, to a gas leak, to "death".
I found it ominous at the 9:30 mark when you drove passed the turkey barns that would be destroyed minutes later!!
Clarification. Those were not the turkey barns that were destroyed. The ones destroyed were a little further east and north of those.
Pretty intense photos
Them clouds look bad.
