In this brief video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy provides viewers with some recommendations on how to select, care for and use 80 mesh vitreous enamels.
Prof. Ahr has used enamels in both his artwork and jewelry designs for many years. He has taught numerous students how to use both kilns and torches to fire their enamel projects. Always with an eye toward safety, Ahr's instruction encourages students to think like artists.
This video covers important considerations for successful use of this colorful media such as creating a color pallet and test firing your materials. It's important to know what the enamel will look like on your chosen surface and how it will appear against, underneath, and on top of other colors in your design.

Hello I have a question I have a bubbles problem with the enamel can you help me please 🙏
Bubbles in your enamel generally indicate that you have applied a layer(s) of enamel that is too thick. Bubbles can also indicate that the enamel has not been washed and sifted to a uniform grain size. Try applying thinner layers and see if that helps. Good luck with your enameling. 😀
hey John, I am getting started with enameling my jewelry. I have silly question, approximately how much enamel is in those jars? I am trying to get an Idea of my first order and how much I need to get.

Hi Coty, I honestly don't know how much enamel is in each of the jars. But, I can tell you that I filled them from 4 oz bags. I suggest that you purchase some enamel basics like white, clear for copper, and maybe two of your favorite colors and supplement that order with an enamel sampler. That way you can better decide what colors you like. The amount of enamel that you'll need will depend on how you work and how productive you are. Good luck with your enamel projects.

No. Enamel is ground glass. It will not work on non-metal surfaces. You can find out more about enamel materials on the www.thompsonenamels.com website.

Hi John. I tried to use Thompson enamel on silver with 2020 flux, but anyway the enamel darkened and some colores turned black. Why did this happen? Do I need to make more layers of flux?
Hi Cristina, The enamel will always change color when you heat it. Often is will turn black as it comes to the temperature necessary for it to flow. But, as it cools it should regain its color. If you are torch firing your enamel, you may need to experiment with your torch to find the "sweet spot" in the flame where the enamel isn't adversely effected by the flame. Be sure to watch the OJA's videos on how to fire the enamel. Good luck with your creative pursuits.

There is a website called: http//e-namels.com and they sell special paper for printing out laser printer decals. Have you tried using them? And this site also sells copper bowels too.
Hi Kat nip, I have not tried the laser printer decals. They sound interesting I'll have to check them out. I can't imagine how they work on an enameling project. There are a number of enameling sites online that sell a wide variety of products. thompsonenamels.com is the grand daddy of them all.

+Mari Sol This material is glass not paint. So, it is waterproof. It would be redundant to use enamel and resin together since resin mimics what enamel looks like.
