    That Samsung sound bar the Client has mounted is mounted with the speakers facing downwards at the floor not outwards. Samsung has threaded inserts on the bottom of their sound bars that use an L bracket to mount to a wall, you can see the threaded insert was used to mount it to that pull down mantle mount, therefore having the bottom mounted to the mount and the speakers aimed at the floor.

    All the mass and bulk of that mantle and whatever is placed on the mantle is held to the brick chimney with (2) 3/8ths threaded shafts. Don't overload! Very nice work.

    • @satyajitO3Wall
      @satyajitO3Wall 8 месяцев назад

      Tensile strength of typical mild steel threaded rod is 60k psi, which gives a shear strength of 60k/1.73 = 34.7k psi.
      Now, a 3/8" coarse pitch threaded rod has a Tensile Stress Area of 0.0775 sq-in, which would mean the ultimate shear load for a single rod would be ~2689lbs. With 2 rods the shear load would be ~5378lbs.
      Home Depot rates their 3/8" threaded rod for 1900lbs (it is derated from ultimate values, for a nice safety factor).
      As you approach these loads, the failure point would actually be the wood studs or the metal bracing used for clamping the rod to the studs.

      @Candisa 3 года назад

      Drill 2 small holes on the back of the least seen side (top/bottom) where the pins are, into the pins, and use long enough screws to go through the wood and into the pin.

    • @geongeo
      @geongeo 2 года назад

      @@Candisa I was thinking the very same thing. I saw how easy it was to slide the mantle on, and my mind went straight to seeing a toddler climbing up to get something shiny and having it pull off the pins and and get crushed.
      I think your set-screw idea is spot on. A long, Allen head screw would be perfect, while keeping the hole size to a minimum.

    Is that fireplace a gas one or just a modern version of a wood burning fireplace? The reason I ask is because looking at the chimney when you were in the attic it seems like only the brick part was where the wall was on the other side of the wall and inside there was metal venting instead of a large brick chimney.

    • @StudPack

    Does the wood not attach to the metal bracket in any way?

    • @StudPack
      @StudPack  3 года назад +4

      There is no provision for this Justin; however, we mentioned to the owner that if he would like the mantel secured to the bracket, we could put a screw(s) through the mantel into the 1" diameter pipes on the bracket. He's going to let us know in a week or so.

    Did I miss something ? How does the mantel stay tight against the brick ? Do you use an adhesive ?

    • @StudPack
      @StudPack  3 года назад +2

      It's just a friction fit Don. Pretty hard to pull off. We told the homeowner we'd come back and put some screws thru the bottom of the mantel that bear against the pipes... like a set screw on a pulley. So far so good 👍 IIRC the instructions said to put silicon on the pipes to adhere it but I like the option of having it removable.
