      that actually was not a correct statement when I was in college (1990-1994). I lived in Illinois and I could not afford the five state schools (Northern ILL, Western ILL, Eastern ILL and Southern ILL) and didn't have the grades to get into U of I. I ended up going to an out-of-state school and it cost me LESS as an out-of-state student than it did as an in-state student. Plus I only had to pay one year of out-of-state tuition before I was considered an in-state student and my costs went down even more. I literally don't understand these outrageous costs in colleges today.

Obama is truly the reason this got out of hand by allowing such easy access for students to take out insane amounts of money which in turn allows universities to charge much more.

    Go to trade school people!!!!!! College has become less and less worth it financially to attend. Even if one is majoring in a STEM. There is nothing wrong with going to a trade school to become electricians, plumbers, auto and diesel mechanics, AC technicians, etc. These are real world in demand skills that pay well and they do not take 4-8 years of your time to get working. Many of those who do go into the trades can end up working for themselves if they are enterprising enough.

      uncle paid $15,000 to learn to be a crane operator. Making $70,000 a year now. Dang straight people should go to a trade school. So many trades pay 50k+ a year and it costs less than many people pay for an associates degree lol.

      Isaac Spencer - I would have given you and your uncle 10 thumbs up if RUclips would have let me.
      Way to go uncle! For the price I paid for a brand new 2010 Toyota Yaris, your uncle went and learned a valuable marketable skill in only a fraction of the time and cost a typical college student would take to get a bachelors. He gets paid more than many professors who teach college.
      I have a nephew who is just starting his sophomore year in high school. Me and his mother (my sister) are trying to steer him in the direction of going to trade school. It was my sister and her husband that initially wanted my nephew to go to college, but seeing how God awful outrageous the cost of college has gotten, they have both became quite receptive to my trade school suggestions.
      I tell my sister that while many of my nephew's little friends are going to college and racking up student loan debt, he can be out in the real world after a year in trade school and earning good money. The main problem with college regardless of the price tag is that one isn't earning and producing anything while in school learning. My nephew could be making $50-70k per year before he is old enough to legally drink.

They will take 8.2 years to clear their debt if they lived in a hypothetical world where interest payments didn't exist. Let's say that their total student debt is sitting at a 5% interest rate, they will pay $16,800 this year just in interest. I think that Dave is being optimistic when he says they could clear the debt in 4-6 years.

Maybe 50k some in comparison to some, but that would be the worse cost of living comparison. Cars, food, gas, going on trips, insurances, they are not much different nationwide. Only major difference usually is housing prices. But even if you compare a 200k house on east coast to a 400k one in CA. The difference in mortgage may only be around 1k a month or 12k a year more.

    No college and I make over 100k a year. Why does everyone think college is just the way. Don't get me wrong I'm all for education but I know so many people with degrees that don't even use them

    This is nuts if they cant pay it back , they cant pay it back. The issue is the cost of education and the cost to live and salaries made. This is terrible.

    This is sad, I have no student loan debt with no degree and bring in 86,000$ a year as a courier net, shows a lot of these degrees are scams.

    I'll say it again, we need to make student loans dischargable in bankruptcy like any other debt. That will bring prices under control .

    • @psychoof78
      @psychoof78 7 лет назад +25

      jcrowley1985, as long as their degree is wiped from the records as well, I'm all for it.
      I would prefer seeing loans like this banned from being written in the first place. That would bring prices down.

    • @jcrowley1985
      @jcrowley1985 7 лет назад +5

      Sure, that would be no problem. The whole point of making them dischargeable is to lower the possibility of a borrower getting that far in the hole in the first place. Lower tuition rates due to less guaranteed loans will help people pay them off easier and not getting to default in the first place.

    • @2themaster
      @2themaster 7 лет назад +25

      The government needs to stop cosigning for these loans!!

    • @jcrowley1985
      @jcrowley1985 7 лет назад

      The only reason the government cosigns them in the first place is because they are non-dischargable. So that would just be a side benefit of allowing them do be discharged.

    • @4acrehome168
      @4acrehome168 7 лет назад +8

      I'lll go one further, no more government loans. you either go private, or pay for yourself, thats what ballooned the prices so much in the first place.

    Baffling how people spend so much on a degree that gets you a $50k / year job. $160k for a graphic arts degree.?!

    Kids are expensive all things considered! It would not be a good idea for these pple to pop out kids. Dave is not honest about the costs of having kids-probably because his wife never worked anyways. These pple can't tackle 350k in student loan debt while they pay daycare or the dad stays home,etc. and they now have a 50-100k income.

    • @Theraceagainstmyhealth

      We just had our first and have $24k in wife's student loans and it feels like we have just enough money to meet our obligations and pay extra on debt. Couldn't imagine having an amount that huge and less income.

    Kids ARE expensive! I hate that he doesn't understand that. And I wouldn't recommend bringing a life into this world while you are struggling. Bring kids into the world when you are best suited to give it the best quality life!

    why does Dave never factor in interest when calculating repayment time? 60k a year will not pay off 300k in 5 years ffs

  • @alex5308

    Master's level counselors in North Carolina can count on six-figures? Really?
    Sounds more like the pay scale of doctoral level professionals. Hope she vets those numbers before banking on a jump to $100k+ per year.

    Wife quit her doc program in psychology halfway through her doc program after she got her masters. We realized she would make more money workin in private industry than as a psychologist. That was a great decision and now we are snow balling towards her $227k loans. Should be debt free calling Dave with the scream in 3.5 years :)

    I am still having to do the math for everyone that asks why I quit going to school to get my degree for marriage and family therapy. I make more doing medical billing than I would with a degree and at no point was I expected to do free labor. I can help people in other ways

    I’m planning on taking out $320k loans for medical school and doing PAYE over 22 years. I will eventually pay about $440k, which is equivalent to 3.7% interest rate. I can probably see myself calling in in for years.
