The original singer of Song to the Moon was Růžena Maturová, in the Prague world première of Rusalka in 1901. She died before World War II. There is a primitive recording of the finale of the aria with her here on RUclips. Gabriela Beňačková is perfect!
The voice so beautiful, the phrasing so natural and nuanced, the interpretation so sincere and unmannered, one feels she is talking to you and not singing. I've had fifty years of opera going, and when I thought there were no glories to compete with the past, along comes this marvel. I've listened to many other singers do this, but it's this one I keep coming back to.
I've heard this magnificent voice all my life from the movie "Driving Miss Daisy"...such a beautiful God given talent! I'm so glad to see the face behind this beautiful voice!
Very emotional amazing...! Stunning version. No one else has given me the deep emotion that Gabriela is giving me with this interpretation. She is simple the best Rusalka. Brava e grazie Gabriela...!
My most favourite version of this song. I first heard this song in a movie; "Driving Miss Daisy" when I was a teenager. I watched that movie 8 times. Ever since then I have loved this song and Ms Benackova's perfect rendition of it. I think the composer DVORAK would be proud.
Nezhasni! Měsíčku nezhasni!
Superb.... her Janacek recordings are also. Was at her performance of Jenufa in Carnegie Hall with Rysanek and Eve Queller cond. ...still reigns in 2020 as the longest standing ovation in the history of CH performances!!!!!
It was such a joy to hear her in Katia and Jenufa at the Met many years ago. Somehow her glorious soprano didn't seem to translate into the Italian repertory. But she was truly one of the greats.
OHH - THIS RENDITION OF "Song to the Moon" from Dvorak's RUSALKA is said to be definitive, comparable with that of Lucia Popp, Rene Fleming, and other well- known opera stars (Just type "Song to the Moon" in the space above). It helps to run off a copy of the lyrics in one's own language, which makes it a more meaningful experience :)) :) Youngsters like Patricia Janečková and (I think) Amira Willighagen have a good start on it also :)
This comment says what needs to be said. I simply can't believe this singer's affinity for this music. It is beyond just about anything else I have ever heard. Sheer perfection.
I listened to Karita Mattila singing this piece because she criticised the last performer on Cardiff Singer of The World 013 last night, cant remember her name...something Toka i think...she looked like she had only just become a teenager, a very sleight.girl.....but she had a lovely pure voice, a little thin but very, very, good...but her interpretation was far better than this ....and Karita's. just as Maria Chiarra's interpretation of "They call me Mimi" is unsurpassable.
alfred schumacher Geschmacksache.
If this told german man or another not chzech or slovak citizen, then it is automatly stupid coment. I dont heart articulation of chzech ř and chzech words. Because we heart that Fleming is absolutly wrong about chzech words, i mean articulation. We dont understand to her. But if slovak or czech opera singers singing in italy german or french opera, you understand him.
Amazing voice! Original singer of Song of the moon (Rusalka). No one can ever sing this like Gabriela Beňačková. !! ❤ Czech Republic!

Simply the most amazingly beautiful thing I have ever heard. This is simply what perfection sounds like.
Totally agree. Her interpretation is my favourite
Thanks Mrs Gabriela Benackova for singing Rusalka of the great Anton Dvorak
Very emotional amazing...! Stunning version. No one else has given me the deep emotion that Gabriela is giving me with this interpretation. She is simple the best Rusalka. Brava e grazie Gabriela...!
My Wife Julie’s favourite aria ever , and ONLY by Gabriela. No one else comes close.... and I agree with her!
What a sweet, warm lovely voice! thank you. Than you YOU TUBE!

Bozky hlas, prekrasna Rusalka ! Tuto operu milovala moje babicka!!!!!
Creamy voice from top to bottom. Steady, pure, focused! Brava!
Beautiful!
Fantastic! No words to describe. This song performed by her was present in a movie I cannot remember which
Mamma mia che brava!!!!
Damn, I love opera! When it’s a song like this, I get emotional. Love it so much
one of the best rusalkas. especially the high notes sounds so natural and pure. so much better than r.fleming.
Fleming nowherre in her league.
What a glorious voice, sends shivers down my spine!
The Best of The Greatest.
❤ James Levine conducting, from his 25th Anniversary Gala concert at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, 1996. We miss you.
Gabriela Benackova demeure toujours pour moi la meilleure interprète de Song of the moon.
Moved to tears... thank you very much.
I am listening to her recording of the opera now. Sublime.
Love this used in Driving Miss Daisy cemetery scene ❤️

She was also fantastic with Domingo as Magdalena in Andrea Chernier and as Mimi in La Boheme.

Wonderful !
Merci operafreak9
I guess there are no comments here - since this is a miracle and leaves everyone speechless...
This comment says what needs to be said. I simply can't believe this singer's affinity for this music. It is beyond just about anything else I have ever heard. Sheer perfection.
The best!
Benackova owned Rusalka!
Wow, just wow!
That IS how it is done, you're so right Alicia M
Classic,incomparable......
Perfection.
Belissima!
Outstanding..!!
Brava
Exquisite!
Yes,she is still alive she is 66
La mejor interpretaciòn.

As I cry.
Wunderbar!
The powerful performance draw into the impressed depth .Is a person listening to this song a person of what country ? please tell me it .

Nejkrásnější operní zpěvačka Světa.
5:00 glasses, peoples eyes and ears are exploding in 5 km radius
I thought Lucia Popp owned this aria, but I’m afraid she has to accept joint custody, now. Wow-just wow.
nádherný hlas¨
encantado de mais
A marvel. And very little ( almost none) vibrato. Makes you realize how many singers today overdo vibrato.
Still smokes young Cardiff winners
Nadhera!
, 🥰
huh?
My favorite moment?? 3:41 a non slovic would have no purpose to sing that way...

I have to agree with BAYTADARELL529 ....much as i hate to criticise any opera singer .
Short phrasing
toll.toll, aber Renee Flemming ist besser!!!

Too slow: sounds like a dirge. She breathes every two bars. D.O.A.
