  • In this video I will show you how you can upgrade your hard drive based Sony camcorder. Its very simple and takes only 10 minutes.
In the video, I am upgrading my Sony HDR-SR10 camcorder that has a 40GB hard drive, which is about 5 hours of video on highest quality setting. I am swapping out the drive for a 80GB drive (About 10 hours of recording!)
All you need to purchase is a Toshiba ZIF type hard drive (The same drives they use in iPod Classic).

Perfect instructions! Saved me a ton of money. Anyone who is the least bit handy with computers can accomplish this in about ten minutes. Only difficulty was my unfamiliarity with ZIF drives, but the mechanism is similar to other ZIF clips. Take your time, use a light touch, and you can't go wrong.

Brilliant- worked a charm on my SR10... couldn't have done it without your clip especially the ZIF clip part. Bought the identical Toshiba 80GB HD on Aliexpress only about USD22- took 2 weeks to arrive. Thank you.

Works great on DCR-SR300 for upgrade to SSD. I used a MSATA to IDE ZIF adapter from Micro Sata Cables #BC67546 and 120 GB Kingston SSD #SMS200S3/120G. Had to add tape under the ZIF cable as socket is for thicker cable. There is a bit of extra room that was filled with PCB bubble wrap. Camera says 1789 minutes left in 9M high quality mode .

Awesome! Back in 2008 I was contemplating the idea on my ex-camcorder Sony SR7, but was hesitant to screw something up. Searching for "hacking hdd camcorders" back then didn't yield any results. I knew it could be done because all electronics are becoming nowadays like little computers with storage. I applaud to your determination and success on this hack.

For those who are facing HDD problems and have any Sony camera with memory stick slot , try this:
    1- Place the memory stick
2- Go to "Home" -> "Manage Media" (or something like that) -> And select the option to change to the memory stick, instead of HD.
3- Go to "Manage Media" again, then to "Format Media", so choose to format the HDD! - Now that you are running the camera from memory stick, you'll not have any problem to format the HD.
At least worked with me! I think it worths the try!

For those who tried to use Toshiba MK1231GAL ZIF disk with Sony HDR-SR11 or HDR-SR12, quick warning: it will not work.
Problem is probably the interface of the disk. Original disk in the camera supports everything up to ATA-7, while MK1231GAL ends career at ATA-4, according to Toshiba's specification.
Somebody commented that his camera seems to write to the disk, but won't read back. Yes, it writes something, but when I checked the data is utterly corrupted.
Must be some incompatibility somewhere and the first suspect is ATA protocol. So make sure and buy a disk that is modern enough.

Do you know anything about the ATA on the Sony SR82 HDD? I want to upgrade to a SSD for write speed. The Drive I found is ATA-7, 40pin.
I know it's an old comment, I'm a little behind the times.

Thanks for the video! I upgraded to a 160gb Toshiba MK1634GAL from an iPod classic. Not sure if it works fully yet, will test further, but for now: 1174 min recording time!!!
Update: It records fine, I can play back the recorded files on my computer. I can however not play back the files on the camera, it says "data error". I will probably re-install the 40GB and try another ZIF disk later.

I have this exact camera which I purchased second hand and snapped a bunch of videos. Then when I pushed the "Easy" button everything went blank and now the monitor will no longer open nor will the shutter open. The resulting effect is that I can no longer retrieve or view any of the videos on the internal hard drive. With your video, maybe this will allow me an alternative method to Possibly retrieve these very valuable "lost" vids.
Is this camera of yours still reliable for you..that mine might be worth repairing? I was also thinking that perhaps if I just replaced the monitor, everything might get rebooted(?) But I believe the problem is deeper than that(?) Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Hi, I make some questions, you made the attempt to turn the camcorder without the hard drive? is possible according to common sense to use this camcorder no hard drive and memory card only? I have interest to film more than the recommended height by Sony and the problem is the hard drive, which will happen if I get disconnected directly when I film in height and just leave the memory card? operate the camcorder?

Went through the whole process of possibly getting Sony to help me. My camera is one month past warranty and Sony wants to charge me $421.00 to repair it. Luckily for me it is stuck open, unlike many that have tha half stuck problem. I would have thought there would be a recall as there are so many with the same problem. Needless to say, after a life time of purchasing Sony products, this will be my last one.

MK8009 are listed as 80GB. and you get 585 minutes....
Is it working smooth with no flaws?

I just did my hdr-sr11 with a 128GB ssd. 931 minutes now. Format said it would take 23 seconds and it took < 10. So speed is better, which I can imagine is useful for taking photos quickly. Anything spinning with a head in a camcorder is a risk IMHO. the SR11 has 4 screws..very ez, but you need tiny fingers to do the ZIF connector. I have meathooks

Mine is sony HDR-XR160E. Hard disk is gone bad with error E:31:00 constantly flashing. Tried reset, format multiple times. The recording and playing on the SD card is working fine. Planning to replace the hdd with another HDD or SSD. Could you pls let me know or send a link to the product for HDD as well as SSD. Pls also share your experience if camcorder is working fine after replacement.

Where did you find that the max hdd a Sony camcorder from that time could accept was 120gb?
