  • The 13 July Uprising of 1941 in Montenegro was a significant anti-Axis rebellion during World War II. This uprising marked the first large-scale revolt against Axis forces in Europe, occurring in the Italian-occupied territory of Montenegro. The rebellion erupted on July 13, 1941, spurred by local resistance against the harsh occupation policies and inspired by the Soviet Union's fight against Nazi Germany. Organized primarily by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, the uprising mobilized a wide spectrum of Montenegrin society, including communists, nationalists, and former royalists. The insurgents rapidly gained control over numerous towns and villages, disrupting Italian communications and capturing weaponry and supplies. Within a short time, large areas of Montenegro were temporarily liberated from Italian control. However, the Italian forces responded swiftly and brutally. By the end of July, with reinforcements from Albania and aerial support, they launched a severe counter-offensive. The repression involved mass executions, village burnings, and widespread arrests, leading to significant casualties among the rebels and civilians. Despite being quashed, the 13 July Uprising had a lasting impact. It symbolized the deep-seated resistance to fascism in Montenegro, providing a crucial morale boost and operational experience for the Yugoslav Partisans, who continued to resist Axis forces throughout the war.

this is something a lot of Balkan historians do not want to talk about when it comes to Chetniks. It was NOT a single organization. Instead it was a traditional form of self organization among Montenegrians and Serbs. (and there was even one formed on the island of Krk)
AS such they acted differently. Those in Ravna Gora turned to collaborations, those in Bosnia did not and later joined the Partizans

@HistoryHustle I don't know if it was large enough to be considered "major", but the first uprising against the occupiers on the territory of Yugoslavia took place on the night of June 5-6, 1941 in Eastern Herzegovina. The first liberated territory that no longer fell into the hands of the occupiers until end of the war and the first liberated municipal center in Yugoslavia.
The uprising was a reaction to mass Ustasha crimes in Herzegovina, and the direct cause was one of the most heinous crimes of the entire war, in the village of Korita. The leader of the uprising was the Orthodox priest Radojica Perišić, who later became a Chetnik commander, which is why the uprising itself, in communist Yugoslavia, was neglected in favor of The 13 July Uprising in Montenegro as the first in Yugoslavia.

An excellent video. Thanks for your great work in describing what happened in Montenegro and other parts of Yugoslavia in WW2. Much of this history is not well known, like other countries in Europe at the same time where there is much information. After 1945 Tito imposed total Communist rule, and his biased version of what happened became the official version, with very little information and historical research permitted into the other sides of the story. Very few histories in English and other languages have been written about this since 1945. Balkan history is extremely complex, violent, and tragic on many levels, and only the most serious historians are able to uncover what really happened. Thanks to historians like you, the story is becoming better known, but there is still much more to be told nearly 100 years later.

History is not written by the victors, but written by those with the most consistent and compelling arguments based on the evidence, backed by a healthy dose of rational logic and passion for debate. The key is not to apologize for any side but to take a firm stand for what's right and what's wrong.
Or a quote of Max Miller: “They say 'history is written by the victors,' but in my experience, history is written by those who write stuff down."

The rest under arms were occupiers or terrorists. If it were not for the English and their betrayal and the Red Army (USSR), the communists would not have won. The cooperation of the Serbs with the Italians (in some areas) was a necessary evil in order to save civilians from the Ustaše and the Germans. The first liberated cities in Europe were by the Chetniks. You can't compare the fight between the Chetniks and the partisans, the repression against the Serbs was terrible for a wounded German, 50 civilians, and for a dead 100, no army can handle that, the partisans didn't mind.

@@HistoryHustle serbs that live in crna gora. I call them criminals and cowards mainly because of the 300 cows they stole and herded back to crna gora, on their retreat, fleeing the Croatian army. Looting and burning down most houses on their way. They showed their true worth as a military force Then again they showed themselves in Krajina, Vukovar, Škrabinje and off course Srebrenica. 🤮
