  • Want to know how to hand craft your own Custom hand made miniature (Half-Timbered) medieval house from scratch? Here's the first Vlog update of what I accomplished over the past week. It's a little out of order now as I wasn't expecting to make this as heavily edited as I did, but the first level is soon to come.

First Voice-over I've done so still a learning process and much room for improvement. Going to invest in a new Mic for better sound quality. Overall, hope you didn't mind too much. :P

I hot glue Dollar tree foam RC planes together. Its (a LOT!!) stronger then you think. The joints survives 60mph crashes that rip planes in half.. And a few drops of Isopropyl alcohol removes hot glue from most things. and a lighter removes strings. But! Hot cars can break the joints. lol Also look at "Precision tip applicators" on amazon! I wood glue around a 100 laser cut wood things on Esty a month. The little blunt tip needle, gluing smallish things, is life changing! Used a tooth pick and a glob of glue for a year before I remembered the bottles from my Micro Solder Tech days.. LIFE CHANGING. lol

I'm new to modelling and new to your channel. I love your work; your videos teach me so much.
Interesting fact for you re: medieval Britain. Land taxes were levied according to the surface area of the ground floor, which is why so many medieval buildings have that characteristic overhangs on upper floors. Streets were narrow, and sometimes the overhangs would almost meet across the road, creating dark 'tunnels', which helps explain why rickets was so common!

@@RealTerrainHobbies Medieval nobility would tax everything they could get away with. There was this crazy tax on windows at one time. Even today you can see buildings over here where some of the windows have been bricked up lol

During the Medieval times they *did* have saws, it's just they were *very* expensive and generally not often used for construction, more for high end furniture carpentry.... Mix of it being difficult to make (and correctly harden) the teeth and sharpening them meant that medieval carpenters only used their saws for things that could not be done any other way. Their saw was probably their most expensive tool and was not used for run of the mill jobs!
The tool the used for shaping lumber like that was an adze, sort of like an axe but different, best way to describe it is an arched axe like blade mounted perpendicular to the handle rather than parallel, rather like a gardeners hoe. Kind of like a cross between a plane and an axe! While an axe could do a similar job an adze is far more efficient and controllable.
The model looks awesome though! Learning a lot from this series. I love the way you try to mirror construction techniques as much as possible, I would never have considered actually using real plaster to plaster the walls for example! I have used a similar method to fill in the gaps in stonework as you do, but it never occurred to me to actually plaster the internal walls! I'll stick to painting the wood though, I understand why you use staining, but using paints means if I forget to wear gloves it is no real problem, and you can garuantee I will forget to wear gloves!

The FANTASTIC things that you make will ALWAYS be worth waiting for. Yes, I have alot of your videos to catch up on but even then it's well worth the wait.
My Christmas tree came out well, made of clay, the light bulb is inside & just small plastic coloured bits of plastic that look like little lights on the tips of the branches., with a plastic star on top.
I left one plastic 'bulb' off at the bottom of one side of the three so if you want a small sgin it can slip in there. Then if you want to make personal Christmas cards, you take pictures, changing the sgins, have them developed with the person's name on it, the pic can go on the front of the card, inside, or what have you.😁
Forgot to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

They did have saws and even sawmills powered by waterwheels in the medieval times, although I don't know how common it was to make planks with them. However, buildings like taverns that get a lot of customers would probably have better craftmanship than houses build by peasants. Although, if it's somewhere secluded it would be understandable for the original owner to cut some costs. I imagine this would be especially true in fantasy worlds where many shortcomings of medieval technology can be overcome with magic.
That being said, I don't dislike the look you gave the tavern =)

Streamlining suggestions: don't waste time building, glueing, and staining a wood base that no one will ever see. Use hot glue. Don't plaster your fake house.
