You could use peanut butter just as easily. If you want to trap a lot of squirrels the trap is the most important consideration. I've disposed of 223 squirrels since June 2014 but most of them were caught when I switched to a new type of trap.
The best solution to a squirrel problem is the Havahart #1083 "Easy Set One-Door Cage Trap for Squirrels and Small Rabbits" I used to use the Havahart 1030 but I have upgraded to the 1083 and now have 3 of them. It only has 1 door which makes it much shorter and I thus need a much smaller tropical fish tank to drown them in.
This is the most humane way I have found to dispose of grey squirrels and I try and keep the water reasonably clean. The smaller tank uses less water. But most importantly 1-door traps are not only MUCH easier to set but they are also much easier to bait because the squirrel can only enter from 1 direction so the bait only needs to be behind the walk-on platform. You don’t have to “balance” the mechanism the bait sits on, thus the 1083 is also a much faster trap to bait.
The other great thing about this trap is that I never have any "set off" by birds. Every time this trap closes, there is a squirrel inside. The 1030 trap was frequently catching small birds, which was a huge waste of time. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed all day with a bird inside. Use cheap peanut butter for bait. And lure them into the trap with a few shelled peanuts. I then consistently take the carcass to the exact same place in a nearby woods for predators to find. I like to think this causes predators/scavengers to hunt rabbits and other small game much less frequently.
At night, I place mouse traps inside the closed 1083 so that only mice can get into them. (this keeps small birds out of the traps) I was surprised to discover a mouse infestation, that I was completely unaware of. The first 8 days I did this, I caught 14 mice behind our garage.

I have many years experience and you don't have to spend money buying multiple products. THE LAST THING you want to do is bring in squirrels from a distance to your trap! All that accomplishes is more work for you. The bait I use is just plain peanut butter on a small piece of bread, (cracker) or just whole peanuts in the shell. You place a small sample outside of the trap just outside the entrance to the trap. On the inside of the trap I place the bait inside a plastic cup. I cut the cup near the bottom about one inch and use it to place the bait in. It keeps it dry and ant free. I then place small bricks around the outside of the trap to keep it stable after you catch your pest and also to keep it from trying to get at the bait without going in. Some will try the steal the bait instead of going in the trap. Make sure to keep any brick away from the steal rod thats attached to the actuator plate so its doesn't trip it by accident. This works! Keep the bird seed for the birds. Its too expensive to waste on squirrels.

And would wear gloves when handling squirrel's trap and bait. Squirrels have very sensitive nose and smart not to go near the traps when it smells human's sweat or smell. I had 2 super smart squirrels eating my fruits and playing on my roof, I put traps out for weeks, all I got were rats and mice. After I put up a video camera, then I realized the squirrels had no interest to get near the trap, they came snipping around and took off. Then I put on gloves, they came closer but would not go inside the traps, took all the baits outside but not inside the traps. I then camouflaged outside the traps, covered it with my fruits leaves, just careful to avoid the metal trigger pin. Voila! Got them both the next few days. I relocated them 20 miles away, but I know there are other squirrels will be moving in :-) oh well! I can share the fruits, no problem, but getting on my roofs are annoying because they make it sounds like someone walking on your roof day time. LOL

Just use the same thing as the squirrel eats in nature ,
    Hickory Nuts
    Walnuts
    Corn
And anything else that squirrels eat , smash it with a hammer and add a little peanut butter to make it stay put , add trap or 22 long rifle ,
    Skin and gut squirrel ,
    Boil for about 20 minutes
Roll in Bisquick and fry in skillet for about 20 minutes ,
Add A-1 steak sauce and enjoy

How to deter a squirrel from climbing onto my roof? First crawled on the porch railing, jumped onto the awning and onto the roof. Placed a contraption on the railing. Now the squirrel climbs up the porch side of the house (vinyl siding) - onto the awning and onto the roof. Put globs of Vaseline on the part of the side o the house. It still climbed on that-heard it slipping around on the vinyl awning but still made it to the roof. I've heard about Rodent Tap with Capsaicin on it-suppose to deter the squirrel with the spicy scent??? It's a long story but I think this squirrel is tying to get back to a place where there once was a hole chewed through the vinyl (since boarded up w/galvanized steel which has since been removed as wall needed to be re-vinyled). Thanks

In your experience do red squirrels follow grey squirrels or vise versa? We are in a newly developed area and after 14 years the new trees are getting very well developed and of course the squirrels are becoming a problem. Red squirrels are very damaging to structures (sheds, barns and houses) We are Purple Martin people and control English Sparrows using a sparrow trap. We don't want the squirrels to gain a foot hold in the neighborhood.

    • @WildlifeCommandCenter
      @WildlifeCommandCenter  4 года назад

Red squirrels tend to be a little more bold in exploring, the greys tend to be more brash around humans, both are problematic and need attention
