Young Justice follows a band of former sidekicks(Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Miss Martian, Superboy, and Artemis), as they perform covert ops missions for the Justice League. After being cancelled in its second season, massive fan appeal brought Young Justice back for a season 3 in Young Justice Outsiders. But what made Young Justice such a fan favorite? What made it special?

One thing I would like to point out that may or may not be relevant, is that Dick Grayson, more specifically Nightwing, is seriously nerfed in almost every tv show or movie iteration of him, when in the comics he’s WAY more badass. He is canonically the most agile and acrobatic person in the world, the fans voted him as the sexiest male DC character, hell even hisbutt cheeks got individual names (Joe and Juan btw in case you were wondering)! Young Justice is the first show I’ve seen where he’s taken seriously, and is actually allowed to show off his skills. Meanwhile in the DCAU movies he gets beaten fairly easily, and is mostly sidelined for other characters to grab the spotlight. For this, a lot of people seriously underestimate how cool Dick Grayson is

    • @yiklongtay6029
      @yiklongtay6029 2 года назад +332

I genuinely do not understand why they always want Nightwing to be beaten by everybody in the DC extended universe. I think the only battle where I was sufficiently impressed with was with the Talons. He even got beaten by energy-blast-reliant Starfire in a martial-art-only fight. Pathetic. He even got beaten by Damien.... despite having a successful comic run as Batman with Damien as his Robin.

It got physical, Damien pushed him down and Dick hit his head on a rock, killing him. So I’m pretty sure it was less of Dick being nerfed to make Damien seem better, and more of a squabble leading to a tragic accident. Which, in my mind, it makes sense why Damien took up the mantle of Nightwing. Sort of to carry on Dick’s legacy. But idk, I’m pretty fuzzy on the details

Young Justice to me has one of the best written lines when it comes to why Batman has Robins but more specifically why he took in Dick Grayson. It's when Wonder Woman questions Batman's decision to train Robin at such an early age.

Watching Young Justice doesn’t just feel like watching a show, it feels like watching an entire universe.
It’s sometimes incredible to believe that it’s only 3 seasons. There are 10+ season shows and entire novel series that don’t feel quite as jam-packed as this show is. Having them being a reflection of their mentors, but different... growing and finding themselves while having some identifiying trait of their mentors. Most become a "better versions" of their mentors... idk, having that adult figure to inspire to be to an extent, struggle, become better... Also having the mentors pound in life altering lessons that, if done right, will change the sidekicks for the better... become even greater heroes than them. Failing and succeeding, but trying... I loved YJ and had a blast watching it. It was focused on the characters, the sidekicks that are usually put aside, and it was amazing. The villains felt kinda weak (most of them being one dimensional obstacles for the heroes to overcome) and I didn't love the whole huge villain team up idea. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think the Timmverse had better villains and stronger plots. However, YJ still stands as a great show, maybe even the best when it comes to a sidekick show.

Young Justice is my favorite animated show. This show is basically “come for the superhero action, stay for the top tier characters and dialogue”. Seriously, I don’t know how but YJ has some of the best dialogue I’ve ever seen in a fictional property. There’s so much attention to detail and authenticity it’s nuts.
You’ll have a character like Impulse come from the future and thus has his own set of slang like “Feel the Mode” or “Crash”, and over time that slang will be adopted into the whole group and by the time you’re in season 3 basically the entire cast of young heroes are just casually saying those things because it’s been naturally assimilated into their vernacular. Same thing with Robin how he would dissect words like arguing that people are always “overwhelmed” but why isn’t anybody ever just “whelmed”. And whaddya know, the characters start saying stuff like “I’m feeling pretty whelmed right now”. Or how Miss Martian can create a telepathic link so that those connected can speak freely but privately psychically even at a distance, and so overtime it becomes so natural that they’ll have “group chats” in front of the main heroes which even gets called out. And later down the line in season 3 M’egan and Connor just naturally speak psychically in their house because of course if you live with a psychic and you can just speak through your mind without needing to talk that would just become your primary means of communication. There’s just so much depth and nuance to the dialogue in this show it’s insane.
And that’s just talking about how good the writing is in a dialogue basis, it holds this quality to ALL of the writing.
Like in season 1 they have an episode where the characters are in a psychic simulation by Miss Martian to train for a no-win scenario against an unbeatable alien invasion that immediately kills the Justice League, but early on when one of the team’s members die it causes a mental shock that then makes them all forget they are in a simulation and locks them in, so they go through this world ending event where all the heroes are dead and they each die one by one genuinely believing it’s all real.
At the end they get out, but you know how normally “simulation episodes” are just one and done things that are forgotten by the next episode in most media? Yeah, no. These were kids, teenagers, who went through the trauma of genuinely believing the world was ending, their mentors died, their friends died, and even they themselves died. So the entire next episode is dedicated to them going through therapy with Black Canary, each having a distinct way of processing their experience. Robin learns he doesn’t have that drive batman does to complete the mission at any cost (planting the seeds of what Dick Grayson eventually does in any DC content where he diverges from Batman and forges his own identity later as Nightwing). M’egan deals with the guilt of causing so much trauma for her friends. Aqualad feels he failed in his duty as leader during the crisis but also is faced with the realization it’s his burden to bear because nobody else on the team is capable of handling that position yet. Wally is just in total denial and masks his feelings with attitude. And Superboy, holy shit is Superboy’s thing so amazing. Basically Connor is especially angry and standoffish throughout the episode, and towards the end he’s had enough time to process his thoughts so he comes to Black Canary and confesses that for his short life he’s always looked up and idealized Superman (being his clone and all). So when Superman was gone, Connor got to fill that role and feel what it was like to be Superman for once, and it made him happy. The world ending, his friends dying, and he couldn’t help but feel happy that for once he could feel what it was like to be THE Superman and fill the role he was literally made to fill. And the shame of that was eating him to the core, he doesn’t know how to live with that. And Black Canary doesn’t just give him a magic way of fixing the problem, she acknowledges straight up there’s no easy answer to that and that admitting this to himself is a first step but only a step. Like holy shit right? That’s like the most interesting “dealing with trauma” thing I’ve ever seen in a superhero media, and it’s based in a simulation episode for gods sake.
I just cannot gush enough about how absurdly good the writing in this show is. And it’s even more amazing knowing this is coming from, of all things, a “kids” (quotes cause it’s the same way The Clone Wars is only technically a kids show) superhero sidekick cartoon. When they revealed season 3 was coming I deadass almost cried because, much like when TCW was revealed to be coming back at the SAME event (you can imagine it was a hype af day for me) nobody thought it would actually happen.
And even though every season has its issues, they all still retain very strong writing, and Season 4 is shaping up to do the same. Young Justice is a show perfect for both people with little not much depth of familiarity with the DC universe and want to be introduced to its vast stories and characters without needing to watch other media, and for people who do have strong familiar with the DC universe and want to see the characters collectively explored in more depth than they ever have been before.

Teen Titans was about behind a hero despite being teens. They showed they could stand on their own and that they could not only form their own league, but that they could thrive on a scale the Justice league had forgotten. They had their niche, helping people. Not just stopping world ending catastrophes, but finding disenfranchised individuals and unifying them in ways that teens truly need. They ended isolation, and were truly human, something the JL really can't say. Young Justice was about sidekicks. They are the YOUNG justice. Teen is just the age group, but here we are reminded constantly that they exist in a shadow, and that was played into. It was absolutely deliberate that the Teen Titans never interacted with "major" heroes, it would have disrupted the dynamic of them being recognized as full heroes, and that was something they could never do. The only reason that I believe they even made the single batman reference was because of the specific situation, designed to call into question Robin's allegiances and values. Questioning inherently, "is Robin a hero?". But its hardly even a question, of course he is, he is the moral stoicism of batman as well as his own hero

Everybody from the original team is now either an asshole or getting betrayed by everybody around them and Wally West had become nothing more than an emotional device to make me keep coming back. (dog sleeping with Wally West doll as end credits, Best Boy and Robin hallucinating him, Zatanna creates fake Wally to make Artemis move on etc)
And now I'm hearing that season 4 would focus on that jumbled mess that was the Motherbox storyline. I'm sorry but this is where I get off the train for this show. I will always cherish seasons 1 & 2 but other than that, I'm done.

You didn't mention this in your video, but I always found it interesting how the new characters in season 3 (Geo-Force, Halo, Forager, and Cyborg) are "outsiders" to the sidekicks theme. You could argue Artemis served as a mentor to Halo (and Terra) and Geo-Force had a close connection to Superboy, but they otherwise break away from that. Even the new members of the Team (Spoiler, Thirteen, Arrowette, etc.) still followed it, but not those first four.

Yeah I mean, when the show keeps having twists, regularly, constantly, I couldn’t help but be desensitized to them as the show progressed. I also got tired of how much the characters disagreed with one another, how many compromises were made, how bleak the show was.

My favourite type of superhero story is one were they were teens(MHA is my favourite show period)
    because
1.teens always make more severe mistakes
2.Im a teen so I can directly relate
3.The stakes in fights are always higher. My favourite fight in young justice is the brief moment of super boy and robinn fighting a mind controled batman and superman.Because something about children fighting adults is terrifying to me.Also why I love the deku vs muscular fight in MHA
