  • The Salmon Ponds is located in Plenty, Tasmania, approximately 45km north-west of Hobart and a car journey of approximately 45 minutes.

The Salmon Ponds was established in approximately 1861 on the Plenty River in Tasmania, Australia. The aim was to stock Tasmanian waterways with salmon for a game fishing industry. Unfortunately, the first few attempts to transport salmon and trout eggs from England were unsuccessful. Then, in 1864, after experimenting with transportation techniques to keep the eggs alive, live salmon and trout eggs arrive in Tasmania and were successfully hatched.
However, while trout are primarily non-migratory fish, salmon are migratory. It was expected the released salmon would return to their hatching location; but this did not occur. Fortunately, the trout became established.
A museum on site provides details of the history of the salmon and trout farming in Tasmania.
The Salmon Ponds is a beautiful location and is a popular destination. Ann onsite cafe can become busy, especially during holiday season, and you may experience a short wait. Just go for a stroll through the gardens and feed the fish (fish feed can be purchased from Ann automatic dispenser inside the main gate). The cafe food is tasty and filling.
Nearby, at Westerway, there’s the Westerway Raspberry Farm where you can purchase various berry products (the raspberry farm grows more berries than just raspberries). During the season, you can also pick your own berries.

At Maydena there is also the Railtrack Riders where you can ride (in pedal cars) on the old logging industry rail line. See my other video for the Railtrack Riders experience.

I would recommend doing the railtrack ride in the morning and return to the Salmon Ponds, via Westerway Raspberry Farm, in the afternoon.
This is not a sponsored video. We visited the Railtrack Riders, Westerway Raspberry Farm and Salmon Ponds as paying tourists.
