    i personally believe the top tier BIM coordinators / drafter are the ones who have the hands on field experience with their drafting trade. i am a plumbing mechanical pipe drafter. i worked out in the field as a journeyman plumber for 10 years before advancing into the office. Once i learned the modeling software it was a wrap, knowing the trade already gives me a huge advantage over others and in coordination meetings. i didn't go to school at all other then my trade school for plumbing

    Cool, the advise i would give to young people still in school/uni is, learn programming, our profession benefits a lot from good programmers making tools and things more easy for us technicians.

  • @pintopunteruksmallford1035

    I had a similar career path although I concentrated on the technically and construction side of drawing/drafting. We weren't exposed to CAD or BIM until years into our careers. I was self taught on AutoCAD and only now, 30 years later starting to use Revit and BIM. Its fun learning something new (for me) but my skills and experience are so broad as a draftsman you can't always have the time to actually sit down and focus on one role. I've worked in design, on site, with clients and with building companies....Not so much with Architects as their job is not where I found my skills were suited. If I was to give advice to anyone starting out in this career? Just try as many roles within this field of work as possible to find where you fit it.....And it helps being mechanically minded as well.

    I'm finding my Bachelor of Architectural Design course to be less about job-ready skills, that will help in the real world, and more about indoctrination and artsy fartsy bullshit.. It's really quite frustrating.. There's very minimal taught on drafting, CAD, and especially anything to do with designing structures that can actually be built.. I'm actually looking to transfer to a drafting course, and revit courses..

    • @kylesinko
      @kylesinko  2 года назад +2

      I found that the case too, especially for the first year. Though I think it does get into more practical skills, it’s a slow journey to get there, mainly doing more practical stuff in the final years.

    • @robertneale7326
      @robertneale7326 2 года назад +4

      @@kylesinko I've actually had the opposite experience.. The first year seemed to be much more fundamental information, and I felt like I was learning the trade, but since moving onto the studios, I've found them to be ridiculously removed from reality.. I'm thinking of changing my studies to a drafting course, and doing some revit courses.. Will get me into the workplace, I believe..
