I think the reason they are doing so well is that they take this seriously - they ride the beat, have really solid delivery - and they said that when they started in 2017 they would aim to keep improving. And whilst their early stuff is still lit, you can see how all the production values have got harder. They also put in the right level of humour (Brits like humour in everything - only have to watch the film Lock Stock.....) The other thing is - they are Cockneys - so Cockney rhyming slang is in their DNA (that started a couple of hundred years ago and was a way of speaking to confuse the police. And don't forget they had opium dens in Victorian times!). So rhyming like this would not have seemed such a giant leap. By the way - the word fag for a cigarette was noted to have been used in 1888 in the UK and "fag end" meaning the remnant of cloth back to the 1600s. When I was a kid in the 70s - the word was always used to mean a cigarette and not for the meaning that is more commonly used in the States - other slang was used in the UK for that. So it is always funny to watch the discomfort of American reactors - and having to explain to avoid upsetting RUclips. The word is not used as a sly reference or dig - for their age group, the UK meaning is the only one meant, with no double meaning. @@bashtvz Yeh wanted to surprise his granddaughter with a rap after she kept changing the radio station to a hip hop one when he picked her up from school. The result was Shut Your Mouth and it went viral cos its basic but no old codgers ever sounded good at rap before it!
