When McDonald's Made a Sitcom: The Rise Of Branded Content

- Today, branded content is fairly homogeneous, but it wasn’t always. The early aughts were the wild west for branded content, and there’s one show that has eluded me for the better part of a year, my White Whale, the McDonald’s Sitcom.

Both the comment and the reply have the same amount of likes... very satisfying!
@@unematrix yeah I just fked that up for you
Just tried to look up this sitcom and I only get the wacky adventures of Ronald mcdonald, a show I do remember. I never heard of this sitcom.
And now I find out that Reese's in Canada is just "Reese"? WHAT MADNESS IS THIS!?!
I know, my brain hurts.
Why? Is Reese the entire thing or just one piece?
@@pedrohenriquesoutogueiros1449 You've created a paradox! What about the Pieces? Are they "Reese's Pieces", "Reese Pieces" or "Reese's Piece". Damnit, how many pieces are Reese's? You've doomed us all!
it sounds awful but at least it doesn't confuse people into pronouncing it "ree-sees"
@@pedrohenriquesoutogueiros1449 Ah nice, One Piece.
It took me more than half the video to realize that I read the title wrong. I thought it said the time to norm macdonald made a sitcom. I was wondering why it was just about company sponsorships...
Welcome back 🙂
thanks!
See you again next year
I dont know why, but I feel.the need for some borax. Where can I get some of this borax? Sounds delicious
Honestly man, please please keep these up, I will watch any ad, I fucking love your stuff so much! This is your longest video by far, and it's an amazing piece!
Love from England!
this was an incredible journey to watch and well worth the wait. Excellent work!
This was super well done! I really enjoy the style of these videos.
I'd love to give you some watchtime *right now* but I don't have the time to watch, so I hope this engagement helps for now
, this was one of those tribute subscriptions for me, glad to see it's worth it
Holy hell this was a journey, I remember that one of your videos about 7 to 8 years ago introduced me to one of my now favorite musicians.
I must state that my own statement was inaccurate, it was This Exists that introduced me to chap hop. This is still a fantastic video though!
Good quality content as always. Much love Dylan.
I love this kind of longer, more in-depth exploration of a topic! I'm sure they take a ton more work and time than the shorter ones, but I don't mind having to wait longer if it means videos that are this good. (Not saying I don't also love your shorter videos, but these are especially cool.)
A world without advertising is possible. Dream this dream with me.
Great to see a vid from you, they're always so interesting. I'm from Canada too, and I didn't even know about a McDonalds's sitcom
i sampled that guy talking about "obscenity" in a song once lol
I’ve discovered a channel before it’s blown up - how does this only have 7k views? Subscribed immediately.
I (as most youth inevitably do) worked for McDonald's and had no idea this was a thing. Awesome video!
I really like your videos, super educational
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy :)
Great video!
Watching this after Scott Cramer's video on super bowl commercials. I think the most obvious kind of branding is stuff like Target bags or a certain car brand appearing.
Giff Gaff's RUclips series about a band getting out of a contract, I still listen to the music from that
I'm so damn hype right now
It's capitalism. People hate capitalism until you mention that it's capitalism.
Wow a truly great video!!! 👍
I'm surprised you didn't mention that just this year there was a TV show that was essentially just an ad for Legos on FOX during primetime.
Lego Masters, hosted by Will Arnett, was a game show competition where people compete to build different structures.
Not just that, but there's also Lego movies which have been massively popular, and Lego based video game franchises - as in plural.
Legos is one of the most integrated product advertisements within popular culture.
You have one of the best channels on YT.
Did you set the amount of ads as part of the experience? if you did, bravo good sir!
Hmm I gotta find a Texaco station.
this feels so dystopian and yet it's real
I'm suddenly remembering those Clive Owen BMV shorts. I had totally forgotten them until literally this video. Also, apparently I missed the extremely blatant product placement in Fringe
When NeN uploads:
It's free -real estate- _quality content_ .
Your white McWhale 😆 loved this!
I hate that people shit on youtubers for doing sponsorships. The best part about sponsorships is that that the creator *already got paid for it* before the video went up, so you don't really have to feel bad about skipping it. In contrast, people who use adblock (I do use it, though I am also a premium subscriber) DO actually harm the bottom line of a creator on youtube because adsense KNOWS when ads aren't being viewed due to adblock.
Amazing video, tho a little light on the mcdonalds stuff for such a title. Regardless, what was that bit at the end? I need to find out the source of that man telling me I have to decide.
He’s back!
I am :)
watching the office max ceo hand over a giant gift card for 60k in arts funding for a public school really gave me that want to watch the world burn feeling
this should have more views
At least with that Boraxo whatever it tried? To tell some history....while that Mcdonalds was a pure Mcnothingburger.
Ah yes, The Colgate Comedy Hour where the famous Roy Donk got his start. Famous for pioneering the Tuk-Tuk sound.
Didn’t he play with Tiny Boop Squig Shorterly?
There’s a second channel?

@@dylandubeau Oh great, another channel that I've never heard of and that looks really interesting.
Soooo many videos to watch....
Please someone show me where I can watch this "Instant Death" tv show it looks to good to be true!
34:17 pog
ah yes, lead paint advertising
Nice
Great video as usual Dylan. 👍
It’s a shame stupid bottle-flip videos make $millions in ad revenue on RUclips but your well researched, insightful, interesting and educating videos can have ad revenue limited.
The Reese movie was hilarious
I'd much rather listen to Chopin than All American Rejects
Gimme dat Chopin!!!
Extinct for 30 yrs? Ever heard of “Sábado Gigante” with “Don Francisco” ?
This is literally the most from ally undersubbed channel ever.
neato
5:43 What the heck is that animal? How can they go from being someone's pet on a TV commercial, to being unknown in less than 75 years.
It’s a kinkajou! Why on earth that girl has one as a pet is beyond me. They were a weird generation.
I'm sorry? A PET KINKAJOU???? IN NINTEEN DICKETY TWO???
Bro, where were you? I nearly gave up on you.
My other channel takes up most of my time these days. Hopefully the next one of these doesn't take a year to make. haha
@@dylandubeau What other channel is that? I'd love to check it out.
_animalogic_
This totally failed for me as I am off to Burger King. :)
I have RUclips Premium
Wow this channel died
🙃
33:05 is where you want. Dunno why he put in all of this useless filler
Keep the social justice out of history bro! In the 50's and 60's it wasn't stay at home parents, soap company's were NOT ADVERTISING TO MEN, soap operas where made for WOMAN at home doing laundry and shit well the MEN WERE OUT WORKING THE JOBS THAT PAID THE BILLS. Cigarettes beer cars these were male advertisements, not soap company's. Also you act like there was tv like there is now, before regular daily soap operas there wasn't regular tv show in day Durning week days. Not enough money in broadcasting to 100 housewives that have no income. It took a long time before there was more then like 5 channels. Seriously stop rewriting history to fit ur fucking narrative.
