Could you imagine that there was a time when everyone was running home as the sun went down and the first street lights turned on? Come along with us on a trip back to the 1970s; a time so divergent from today that, for modern children, it may seem as unusual as an alien country. In this video, we are looking into everything that made childhood in the 1970s unique, from the simplicity of outdoor play to the excitement of Saturday morning cartoons, which were the ‘70s versions of SpongeBob or The Simpsons.
We will explore how, as a result, the so-called “simple” activities of that generation gave rise to a generation of people who loved independence, imagination, and a wild spirit that, in many ways, seems to be somewhat lost in today’s digital world. We will nostalgically look back at the great times of sticker exchanges, the thrill of biking without an end destination, and the shared experience of having only a few TV channels.

Did you grow up in the 70's? What's your favorite memory?
We rode bikes, played hide-and-seek, swam, etc., until the street lights came on and/or Mom whistled and she had a delicious 5-course-meal ready ❤❤❤

Another thing about the 1970's, there used to be public swimming pools. There used to be a pool, or several of them, in every small city. But then the waterslide parks came along and kids became spoiled and didn't want to go to boring old swimming pools anymore. Then inflation with high and ever-increasing maintenance and especially insurance costs, finally killed them off. I miss those childhood and teenage days, when we all used to go to the pool every summer
Wow, I never really thought of it but you're right! There were public pools everywhere. Right now all I see are indoor pools in gyms. Maybe easier to maintain and keep clean I presume. 🤷♀😊
The idea of not knowing *exactly* where your child is, for even 30 seconds, is completely foreign to most parents (including myself!) today
And with good reason too! Have you seen those videos where kidnappers take only seconds to take your child while you are not looking? So scary!

I grew up in the 1970's. The first part I was a kid but by the mid part of the 1970's I was a teenager and going to highschool. Ah, the memories. I miss those days and that decade. Love from Marysville California

I grew up in the 70’s and my dad loved 8 track tapes and had quite a few of the tapes. He had one for the car and house. I got a stereo and recorded music on cassettes from the stereo. It was fun.
Ya my older brother had 8 track tapes, I had no idea what they were as a kid. Now I do of course. 😄
In the 70s we had touch tone phones.
Oh wow! Really?? I remember our first touch tone phone was in the 90's I think. Were you guys more well off than the average person or was this a normal thing where you live?
Only a minor thing this but ring reinforcements for A4 lever arch files were big at my school. Not sure if you can even buy them anymore. Basically you wrote down your notes on A4 paper which had two punch holes in the margin which you clipped into your A4 ringbinder. The problem was that over time and wear and tear the pages would come loose. The solution was ring reinforcements made from paper and linen, self adhesive or lick on which you attached to every hole of every page of your ringbinder to reinforce the pages. A very time consuming and tedious process but it ensured no page came loose from your ring binder of notes. They had the appearance of paper Polo mints, sold in reels which you could affix to every page.

The Walkman was the 1980s
The REASON for 8-track tapes was that the sound qiuality had not evolved to Walkman levels yet.
I had to google that. LOL. The first ever Walkman was made in 1979, so yes more Walkmans around in the 80's, you're right. :)

This is more for "teenagers of the 1970s" than it is for kids growing up in the 1970s... I grew up in the 70s and never had nor knew anyone who had a Pet Rock, never went to a disco (I was 9 in 1980), never had an 8 track or 8 track player, never had a mood ring, never had a waterbed, and never went to the drive-in -- though I did play Pong, but Atari usurped that pretty quickly.
My brother grew up in the 70's, I grew up in the 80's, so he is the one that told me all those things. However, I remember the mood rings in the 90's! LOL! I think it was invented in the 70's.
And also, I think it all depends what Country you grew up in. 🤷♀

Also there were VCRs, big clunky things that bore little resemblance to the sleek slim ones of the 90s most people think of today. They were kind of a rich people thing (remember that episode of Columbo where the guy was caught because he wanted to show off his VCR?). For me, the music of the 70s is soul music and soft rock, disco is more end of the 70s/very early 80s (contrary to popular belief, it didn't evaporate in 1979 with Disco Demolition Night, it was still popular until 1981, just not as popular in 1980 as it was in 1977-1979). It's kind of funny though how the simplest of activities like playing outside until the street lights came on, bicycling everywhere, using our imaginations is seen as a wonder to today's generation, it wasn't even thought of back then because our parents' generation also played outside similarly back in the 50s, so did our grandparents in the 20s. I remember laughing when seeing a kid asking how we survived stuck in the house all day with no internet back then, the kid couldn't imagine just leaving the house to be with friends and being trapped inside all day (only time we were stuck inside is when it rained, sometimes even that didn't stop us). Another memory, rooftop antennas, it was fun being able to watch TV channels from 100 miles away. I remember my parents telling me how lucky my generation was to have such a powerful antenna and not have to stand and hold the rabbit ears just to watch a little TV.
@AltoonaYourPiano - Oh you are so right! My son is turning 13 and he is obsessed with video games, RUclips, anything on the internet, he cannot LIVE without internet LOL!! I keep telling him, Do you know how lucky you are? There was no internet when I was a kid, we didn't have cell phones or anything close to what we have today. He is so spoiled, but I think a lot of kids are because they really don't know how lucky they truly are. 😂😂😂
@@nostalgicmemories797 I remember the early days of the internet, you had to go to the library to use it and it was mostly just corporate websites and newsgroups, then AOL chatrooms came into being. I got the internet in 1994 or 1995. I also remember the first time I used a computer, it was an Apple II (pre-Commodore 64), it was just a basic math game with a caterpillar and green monochrome screen but I didn't care, I WAS USING A REAL ACTUAL COMPUTER.
I'm kind of glad my city is a little behind the times, kids sometimes play outside in the summer. Not like our generation did, but as annoying as it can be to hear kids shouting when you're trying to sleep on the weekends, it also makes me happy because they're still being kids. My oldest niece's kids are all college age now and I was pleased to see they had somewhat normal childhoods of playing outside and stuff (my oldest niece is 42, her kids range from 18 to 23 years old)
Mood rings weree actually hot not cool.
In fact they turned black when you walked outdoors in the winter.
We had BOTH vinyl and 8-track tapes.
Omg yes! You're right! I remember now... I wore them in high school! It was the temperature! But I remember they sold them saying it had to do with your mood. 😆
Yep, btdt. But we didn't have nearly enough streetlights. When it became dusk, you had dinner at your friend's house. You'd call home, since it was almost always a local call. Yeah, if you had a girlfriend who was a long-distance call, that made things expensive. 🤣
I agree with the street lights. There weren't as many back then compared to now. And yes long distance calls.... I don't miss those! 😂
I'm not in a huge hurry, but I hope the first or second thing I run power to off my lil' wind turbine is a watered, when I'm crossing that bridge as I come to it

By the 1970s Drive-in movies weree already in decline. The multi-screen theatre was just starting to come to the fore. the theatre at that time was a single screen that rotated movies in and out frequently.'
We got our first "touch tone" phone in 1970 the White House phone system was converted from rotary dial to touch-tone early in the Carter Administration
it was the Clinton Adminstration that the White House got voice mail, call parking, Auto re-dial and all the other featurees that were normal in business at the time
I miss Drive in theaters! They were the best!
I am sad the drive in theaters don't exist today. I think it was so nice and comfy to be able to watch a movie in the comfort of your own car. Maybe it was too expensive to maintain? Not sure why they all closed.
Drive-in theaters were still big in my era until the 1980s and their peak was in the 1960s, amazingly there's still two that survived (probably living in a rural area helps, going to either one is like stepping back in time to childhood).
