Had my FA20 turbo WRX tuned with basic bolt-ons. We found that changing out the factory airbox to cold air intake didn't really yield any noticeable power increases. I ran with the Process West CAI for about 6 months, but I found the intake sound became tiresome. I put the stock air box back on, had it re-tuned, and the power output was virtually unchanged. Same with the catback exhaust actually. The main components that impacted the tune (in terms of making power) were the intercooler and the J pipe/high flow cat. Over 200kw, there could be more power to be made using an aftermarket intake systems. But under that, I think its mostly for noise and looks.
Talking power...Yes, I totally agree with you. But one major difference I've noticed is throttle response. Coming on and off the throttle is more responsive/aggressive with an aftermarket intake.
@@Silent_ShadowTHIS! I noticed that soon as I put a stock one on. It makes sense because it's a longer distance and smaller diameter with the stock intake, thought I do predict the power delivery will be smoother
great vid man. thanks. i was considering just getting an up pipe and not bothering with the intake but this vid changed my mind. Ill probably get both. you should try doing the same test with the stock intake with a performance panel filter.
Very good information , but I think the stock box works just as well as any other. Main thing is not just getting in cooler air but cleaner as well and with the stock box a good aftermarket filter intake pipe to the turbo changed will do .Once the intake hole to the box is not located in a area that it in pulling in heat good point to the box it is already located at a point where no major heat source is produced. Just my point of view cause I run it with no heat pull problems only if we have a heat wave in the UK .
I agree, the values show a difference yes but more importantly are they statistically significantly different between stock air box and cai? I betcha there is no statistical difference
Great vide thanks for the info. Just bought a 2006 WRX ! car is running like shit from 2 to 3k rpm and shaking and very bad accelaration. Muy Subaru guy said first things first ... Before even looking at your tune to see what it is, revert this back to normal airbox as it just makes more sound and to be honest I think it is a more HOT AIR intake after running OBD check with my friend as the intake temps were much higher than normal baseline. Luckily found used full set and I am waiting for the used parts which I purchase to arrive and we shall see.. K&N Typhoon is the intake btw
I have a 2019 WRX STI and I have a cold air intake injen and I also have a Cobb 3 inch catback exhaust with a Cobb downpipe catted with a process West top mount and a go-fast bits blow off valve with an accessport stage 293 and I haven't had any problems the injen cold air intake is the first intake that does not require a tune
Hey I have the same question but for the 2010 2.5i impreza. Can you modify the intake at all, and would it need a tune? Without a standalone ecu or piggyback?
G'day guys , 2021 wrx sti , I have spent the last 3 months researching on how I want to go about upping the power , was looking at the iag complete engine builds , cosworth , deshele and the list goes on , I have around 25k to spend and was wondering what kind of whp I could get and what road I could go down to achieve that , once this build is finished I'm going to sit on it for a couple of years and eventually I want to build a 800 whp beast with a sequential gear box , I am not far from Ballarat so you guys aren't far away.... your help would be greatly appreciated
Somebody please help!! Lol do I need a tube connected to the air cleaner element on my 99 Subaru Impreza outback sport 2.2 l? Because at first I thought my air element cleaner was missing, but it's not. The black part to the left of the air cleaner, where the tube should be connected to it with the black box. Well, that is missing, and I swear ever since that has not been there my car has been acting funny. but the dealership where I bought the car at said it's not necessary to have and it should not mess up. However, some kid told me that these cars have two filters inside of the, not the oil filter but it has to do with the air element. And I'm trying to Google it and find out the name of that tube that connects to the air cleaner element but I cannot find it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. That tube piece that he shows! Is that necessary to have? And what does it connect to
It sounds like youre discribing a resonator, its usually a bit of pipework designed to stop the engines intake becoming loud at certian rpm, it isnt hugely important to the cars functioning though.
This is the best data analysis ive ever seen on STI, cheers

Excellent information video. Thanks.
Great video, do you think its worth changing the intake on a mildly modified 2012 WRX, ie are they really any good gains to be had?
What's about air temp?
I apologize what is that tube called?
What year and model is that factory filter box off of? 2.0 or 2.5? Thanks!
His application there says 2011 WRX, so 2.0
2011 rex is a 2.5

Did you ever do a build? I'm curious what you chose to do.
can i combat this using a fpr and a wide band sensor instead of a tune though?
I believe that is possible. Not 100 percent sure
Yes you definitely can
I've got an issue my check engine light came on and it says I have too much air how should I fix this?
You need more fuel ..
Go back to stock

@@wefwefwef. ok, thank you for responding, I really appreciate it.
I fell asleep 12 times watching this
Do you think makes a difference when installing on a naturally aspirated Subaru motor? Such as the newer 2.0i motors??
Don't bother with a NA Subaru just leave it stock.
