The peanut oil myth came about because when demonstrating the engine at a Paris expo someone asked him whether it would run on peanut oil and he basically replied with "idk let's try it" and ended up running it on peanut oil for the entire expo. Rockefeller had no reason to get rid of Diesel. The diesel fuel is basically the waste of crude oil refinement after LPG, petrol and kerosene are distilled out of it. With diesel engines, Rockefeller could actually sell people the waste that he was throwing away before.
I completely agree with your point that Rockefeller didn't really see Diesel as a threat. The Diesel engine in its inception and design was absolutely intended to use mineral oil, but while I agree with your point about him running the engine on peanut oil at the Paris Exposition, I found that afterward he did regularly entertain the idea that there could be alternative fuel mainstays for the engine. His initial ideas are said to lay the framework for future biodiesel innovations. It was more of a happy accident that diesel didn't intend for, and ultimately never took action on, but it does seem that he considered it a real possibility. Now, I don't think Rockefeller ever would have seen this as a threat as, at the time, he was already well established, and, if anything, the diesel engine helped his business. -The development of the High Speed Diesel is normally attributed to Robert Bosch who developed and introduced a production diesel injection pump starting in 1927. Up until then diesel engines used extremely high pressure compressed air. This method made the engine multifuel but also restricted its running speed. Bosch's pump made the high speed diesel possible and allowed it to be used in smaller engines such as that for cars, trucks and eventually aircraft. -I do not believe Perkins had precedence, but I have no doubt he developed the idea independently. -The English developer Herbert Akroyd Stuart developed the "Hot Bulb Engine" about 6 years before Diesels engine. It ran on 5:1 (ie 1/4 the compression ratio of a diesel) so it obtained ignition from spraying the fuel onto a preheated hot bulb in a prechamber. As a result it was popular and cheaper since it did not need a high pressure air compressor though it was only about 55% as efficient. Akroyd began developing his engine by increasing the compression ratio and was experimenting with ratios of 10:1 and even 15:1 so these were on the way to becoming mechanical injection diesels by another route.

Definitely some oddities around this one. You make some great points though. I saw one theory that said a body was never actually recovered. Whoever potentially killed him would have had access to the possessions he had with him, and they could have staged the whole "found his body, took the stuff, then returned it to the ocean" thing.

What makes you believe we have seen the final form of Diesel engines? Diesel technology has been steadily evolving, it still is today. We have yet to see the final form of Diesel's invention. It's light years more efficient today than anyone would have thought possible in Diesel's lifetime!

Good inventions good intentions sadly a long difficult process. Best to sell it and move on at the first bite. One councilor advised. Make something even better with the proceeds. Keep it a secret as long as possible and plan a saturation campaign of product in parallel with the patent process to produce the original in sufficient quantity to out pace any copycats. Going the patent route has serious benefits you just have to have a war chest to stay ahead of the day to day unoriginal.
His original intent was for it to run on coal dust, a dangerous industrial byproduct. He could never perfect the fuel delivery system for this. However, it ran good on seed oils.
I could well be wrong however I seem to recall that the engine explosion that nearly killed Mr Diesel occurred when he was experimenting with pulverized coal as a potential fuel.
Rudolf Diesel was designing an oil lubrication system for a steam engine and found when he shut the steam off the engine kept running on the lubrication oil. That how the Diesel engine was invented. Odd you didn't know that.
The problem he had with smaller versions of his engine was the injector pump which needed to be powerful enough to force the fuel into the cylinder when it was already compressed to around 30 bar. Only a huge pump could do this until (I think) Robert Bosch invented a small reliable pump, lubricated by the fuel about to be burnt, which made his name and fortune.
EVERYONE forgets one of Diesel's brilliant ideas that was a bit ahead of its time. USING CARBON DUST as the fuel. It CAN be done with the right kind of Injection technique. Even Wheat Flour could run a Diesel.
I ran my 1998 C230 SEL on used french fry (canola) oil for 2 years to no harmful effect. Had to filter it and it started slowly in the winter, I hear using a centrifuge works even better if you have the time and juice to spin it down.

It is odd, he was born in Bavaria, studied in Germany and did most of his business with France and Britain, who were at odds with the fatherland. And further to that, with the financial difficulties he was going through, why not simply license his patents out to companies in Germany who needed the power to run factories, ships etc. The Ruhr was a big industrial region that needed such a powerplant. And indeed in the period 1890 to 1914, several German companies were already manufacturing diesel engines for use in trucks and buses to tractors, mining and marine. But by then the patents would have expired and it was free to all. And the German manufacturers excelled in the type and quality of their engines. ☘
We can already use veg oil for engines.. You can go on youtube right now and watch engines running on it. Veg oil + Lye(From hardwood ash) mix, mix slowly to prevent pressure from rising too fast in container, set it in the Sun or warm until sludge goes to bottom, and drain until just Diesel. The oil we are pumping from the ground, we can make the same fuels with it as we can with Algae. Because ITS CAVE ALGAE that got naturally processed. Packard Motor Car company built Diesel engines intended for use in aircraft. I have read that some did fly, but ultimately proved less feasible than gasoline.
Diesel aircraft engines are a thing. Until recently the pilot of a gasoline engine airplane had to continuously adjust the air/fuel ratio as his altitude changed to avoid running lean and over heating the cylinders. Diesel engines don't need that adjustment so they were easier to fly. Around 1990 I worked on a diesel aircraft project for a short while.
There are quite a few diesel aero engines now, they burn jet fuel (kerosene/paraffin) rather than oil. Apparently very efficient and reliable, considerably more so than spark-ignition petrol engines. Check out the Diamond DA42 for example.
Back in the Midwest the farmers run their diesel equipment on heating oil. Sells for a fraction of the diesel price. They put a dye in it to try to go after people doing it.
You are referring to Gas Oil and Road diesel. In the UK there is an underground industry to strip the tax markers out. For those worried about the exchequer losing a few quid in taxes, get real. Banksters, large companies, the City, and wealthy dudes, avoid infinity more taxes, by fair or foul.
As an aside and as someone who has run their diesel on vegetable oil based fuels for many years… there are great benefits to using them in diesel engines, they are both a solvent and a lubricant for example… it’s too bad that Diesel was not able to see this adoption in his lifetime and that it is still relatively uncommon.

It's better to use oil byproduct because it's cheap and nobody used it(as far i remember)and it will be bad if it's just dumped ,so it's a good way to use diesel and better run by diesel fuel not vegetables oils for cost effective in the future

Hi. Diesel's business was in trouble, and he had debts, so the most obvious cause of his death is suicide. He'd previously given a sealed bag to his wife Martha with instructions not to open it for two weeks. It contained a large sum of cash, very likely an "off the business records" gift to tide his wife over any bankruptcy proceedings. Also, his jacket and hat were found neatly folded by the ships' railing, which could not have happened had his death been an accident or murder. His personal effects in his cabin were also neatly arranged, all this being strong circumstantial evidence that Rudolph was in control of events all through, and no other parties were involved. Diesel was hoping to secure a contract with the British, but tensions between Germany and Britain were high and he may have become depressed about his prospects. Cool story, i did not know all the details. Foul play would not surprise me at all. I would love to find an old Lister engine, or build one to run a low rpm generator. The one really interesting vegetable oil as possible fuel or conversion to biodiesel is castor oil, it does not gel nearly as easily in cold temps and has the highest saponification value of all veg oils. Now- what if you run an HHO cell, from a solar panel array, and aspirate veg oil or biodiesel with the gas to feed a simple diesel engine? What generally nit understood unfortunately about true Brown's Gas is the difference between mono -atomic oxygen versus its diatomic state, and the difference between simple DC electrolysis versus capacitative discharge using pulse width modulation. But you need trace hydrocarbons in your fuel to provide carbon lubricant and keep flame temperature moderated. Old school engine tech could serve well with a hybrid fuel concept.
@schinderaepraemeturus2839 Which country are you in? In UK, it's easy to pick up old Listers at the stationary engine shows, off eBay or RealDiesels co. Starting at about £140 for the D series. If you like hybrid fuel arrangements, note that the petrol-paraffin version will run just fine on diesel if you add half a pint of petrol to 5 gals of diesel to bump up the octane, average (bit less in summer, bit more in winter)
I wish some would do some meaningful research. The official name for a _Diesel_ engine is the _compression ignition_ engine. Akroyd Stuart invented the compression ignition engine in England. Look it up.
*LET'S KILL DISINFORMATION* I'm from Germany, I used to build diesel engine injectors and I'm now an engineer. Rudolph Diesel _NEVER_ designed his engines to work on vegetable oil. His FIRST intent was to fuel it with coal dust slurry. That was too powerful, the engines exploded. At that time Germany WAS producing mineral based oil from both wells and coal feedstock (Fischer-Tropsch process.) That is MUCH more efficient than using vegetable oil. At a world expo a bystander asked "Can it run with peanut oil?" Diesel responded "It can." That does NOT MEAN he designed it to run on peanut or other vegetable oils. MY experience with it is vegetable oil causes damage in the long run. Diesel suffered manic depression (called bipolar today) and sometimes manic depressives kill themselves. Sad but true.

I'm no engineer, and while I do try my best to get the science right, it's always helpful to get a discussion going in the comments in case there was something I accidentally misrepresented in the video. Chiefly, I never meant to imply that the diesel engine as we see it today was designed to run on vegetable oil. In my sources (especially the science direct one- it's where I got most of the technical info for the video), which I've linked in the video description, I too came to the conclusion that vegetable oil wasn't only not ideal for the engine, but it could also damage it. But throughout my research, I did come across the fact that after testing peanut oil on the engine, Diesel began to legitimately believe that it was possible to design an engine specifically for vegetable oil, as opposed to mineral oil. Yet, as far as I could tell in my research, this design would never come to fruition in his lifetime, forever staying an unfinished side project that would fuel conspiracies about his death but would also lay some of the groundwork for biodiesel's invention much later. While I'm not an engineer, the last thing I want to do is obfuscate the truth, so I appreciate your comment for clarification. As for his death, I completely agree. I believe he took his own life.
My family and I recently read a book called "The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel" by Douglas Brunt. In it, Brunt proposes the theory that the British government staged Diesel's murder so that he could help them develop their own diesel engines in secret.
In 1910 he chemical company Procter & Gamble discovered that seed oils could be converted to a solid fat. Which then propelled them into society as a viable food source. Prior to that they were not really considered fit for human consumption. Seed oils were considered a waste product of which only a small amount was used for industrial lubrication. Truth is they're not really fit for human consumption and probably responsible for a lot of modern health problems. It would have been so great if all these seed oils would have went into making energy instead of slowly ruining our health.
I saw a report on 60 Minutes Australia a few years ago that revealed that 1 passenger per month on average falls off a cruise ship somewhere in the World. SO the Simplest and Most OBVIOUS explanation here is that Diesel accidentally fell off that ship which would have easy if he had a few drinks and if the ship was swaying with along with the heavy waves. . Believe it or NOT, Coincidences do Happen. 😮

At the time Diesel invented the engine, the oil industry had a huge problem of overproduction of medium-heavy distillate fractions. The only use at that time was as a raw material for gasification for the production of town gas together with coal. Diesel's invention allowed the valorization of a waste product allowing huge profits to the oil industry. Anyone who has dealt with vegetable oils knows that there is no commercial competition with mineral oils because the production costs of vegetable oils are incompressible, while diesel fuel can be sold at the price of a waste without affecting the profitability of the main business.
There is a company in california that goes around to restaurants and vacuums out their used up oil They them purify it or strain it and run their diesel trucks using it as fuel.
I don't believe the suicide story for a moment. He was an inventor who was seeing widespread success and implementation of his ideas. Few things in life are as exhilarating as that. Regardless of any personality flaws, this would have been one of the happiest times of his life.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak intelligently on this topic but one there's one thing I know for sure. Many of those with power and influence would do anything to further their power and influence. Nobody, but since diesel engines have been fine tuned to run on diesel fuel it'll likely be less efficient and cause damage to the engine in the long run so I really wouldn't advise it.
Diesel fuel was much cheaper back then as it didn't have to be refined as much, now it's on a parity with petrol. Why? Would it be profiteering as there are so many diesel vehicles used currently?

Forget electric. I'd like to see investor's support refining the technology of Bio-Diesel Fuel. Seed oils, animal fats, cooking oils are all used in Bio-Diesel. Currently, the fuel has to be protected w/ chemicals that'll prevent algae & growth of micro-organisms. These growths can become large enough to clog the injectors. Over any other energy source not including Nuclear, Bio-Diesel makes more sense for consumers & commercial. I'm not saying it's the 'silver-bullet'; that depends on the application, which could also justify all electric as well. Bio-Diesel has been over looked for to long.

The Diesel engine in its inception and design was absolutely intended to use mineral oil, but while I agree with your point about him running the engine on peanut oil at the Paris Exposition, I found that afterward he did regularly entertain the idea that there could be alternative fuel mainstays for the engine. His initial ideas are said to lay the framework for future biodiesel innovations. It was more of a happy accident that diesel didn't intend for, and ultimately never took action on, but it does seem that he considered it a real possibility.
Now, I don't think Rockefeller ever would have seen this as a threat as, at the time, he was already well established, and, if anything, the diesel engine helped his business. In the video, I only make the Rockefeller point because it's something newspapers of the time jumped on immediately following his disappearance.

-The development of the High Speed Diesel is normally attributed to Robert Bosch who developed and introduced a production diesel injection pump starting in 1927. Up until then diesel engines used extremely high pressure compressed air. This method made the engine multifuel but also restricted its running speed. Bosch's pump made the high speed diesel possible and allowed it to be used in smaller engines such as that for cars, trucks and eventually aircraft.
-I do not believe Perkins had precedence, but I have no doubt he developed the idea independently.
-The English developer Herbert Akroyd Stuart developed the "Hot Bulb Engine" about 6 years before Diesels engine. It ran on 5:1 (ie 1/4 the compression ratio of a diesel) so it obtained ignition from spraying the fuel onto a preheated hot bulb in a prechamber. As a result it was popular and cheaper since it did not need a high pressure air compressor though it was only about 55% as efficient. Akroyd began developing his engine by increasing the compression ratio and was experimenting with ratios of 10:1 and even 15:1 so these were on the way to becoming mechanical injection diesels by another route.

Definitely some oddities around this one. You make some great points though. I saw one theory that said a body was never actually recovered. Whoever potentially killed him would have had access to the possessions he had with him, and they could have staged the whole "found his body, took the stuff, then returned it to the ocean" thing.

Diesel technology has been steadily evolving, it still is today. We have yet to see the final form of Diesel's invention.

Good inventions good intentions sadly a long difficult process. Best to sell it and move on at the first bite. One councilor advised. Make something even better with the proceeds. Keep it a secret as long as possible and plan a saturation campaign of product in parallel with the patent process to produce the original in sufficient quantity to out pace any copycats. Going the patent route has serious benefits you just have to have a war chest to stay ahead of the day to day unoriginal.

His original intent was for it to run on coal dust, a dangerous industrial byproduct. He could never perfect the fuel delivery system for this. However, it ran good on seed oils.
I haven't looked recently, but there used to be a shop near here that would convert diesel cars to run completely on vegetable oil.
I could well be wrong however I seem to recall that the engine explosion that nearly killed Mr Diesel occurred when he was experimenting with pulverized coal as a potential fuel.
I believe you are right, plus he was running too high of compression ratios too, that lead to reliability issues.
Rudolf Diesel was designing an oil lubrication system for a steam engine and found when he shut the steam off the engine kept running on the lubrication oil. That how the Diesel engine was invented. Odd you didn't know that.

That's a popular and enduring myth.
The problem he had with smaller versions of his engine was the injector pump which needed to be powerful enough to force the fuel into the cylinder when it was already compressed to around 30 bar. Only a huge pump could do this until (I think) Robert Bosch invented a small reliable pump, lubricated by the fuel about to be burnt, which made his name and fortune.

I ran my 1998 C230 SEL on used french fry (canola) oil for 2 years to no harmful effect. Had to filter it and it started slowly in the winter, I hear using a centrifuge works even better if you have the time and juice to spin it down.

It is odd, he was born in Bavaria, studied in Germany and did most of his business with France and Britain, who were at odds with the fatherland. And further to that, with the financial difficulties he was going through, why not simply license his patents out to companies in Germany who needed the power to run factories, ships etc. The Ruhr was a big industrial region that needed such a powerplant. And indeed in the period 1890 to 1914, several German companies were already manufacturing diesel engines for use in trucks and buses to tractors, mining and marine. But by then the patents would have expired and it was free to all. And the German manufacturers excelled in the type and quality of their engines. ☘

We can already use veg oil for engines.. You can go on youtube right now and watch engines running on it. Veg oil + Lye(From hardwood ash) mix, mix slowly to prevent pressure from rising too fast in container, set it in the Sun or warm until sludge goes to bottom, and drain until just Diesel. The oil we are pumping from the ground, we can make the same fuels with it as we can with Algae. Because ITS CAVE ALGAE that got naturally processed. There are Algae that require no light to grow and much Algae gets washed into caves that eventually goes down for natural processing.

Packard Motor Car company built Diesel engines intended for use in aircraft. I have read that some did fly, but ultimately proved less feasible than gasoline.
Diesel aircraft engines are a thing. Until recently the pilot of a gasoline engine airplane had to continuously adjust the air/fuel ratio as his altitude changed to avoid running lean and over heating the cylinders. Diesel engines don't need that adjustment so they were easier to fly. Around 1990 I worked on a diesel aircraft project for a short while.
There are quite a few diesel aero engines now, they burn jet fuel (kerosene/paraffin) rather than oil. Apparently very efficient and reliable, considerably more so than spark-ignition petrol engines. Check out the Diamond DA42 for example.
I recently had a flight in a light aircraft fitted with a diesel engine adapted from the one in a Mercedes A Class. Seemed to do the job very well.
Back in the Midwest the farmers run their diesel equipment on heating oil. Sells for a fraction of the diesel price. They put a dye in it to try to go after people doing it.
You are referring to Gas Oil and Road diesel. In the UK there is an underground industry to strip the tax markers out. For those worried about the exchequer losing a few quid in taxes, get real. Banksters, large companies, the City, and wealthy dudes, avoid infinity more taxes, by fair or foul.

As an aside and as someone who has run their diesel on vegetable oil based fuels for many years… there are great benefits to using them in diesel engines, they are both a solvent and a lubricant for example… it’s too bad that Diesel was not able to see this adoption in his lifetime and that it is still relatively uncommon.

It's better to use oil byproduct because it's cheap and nobody used it(as far i remember)and it will be bad if it's just dumped ,so it's a good way to use diesel and better run by diesel fuel not vegetables oils for cost effective in the future

Hi. Diesel's business was in trouble, and he had debts, so the most obvious cause of his death is suicide. He'd previously given a sealed bag to his wife Martha with instructions not to open it for two weeks. It contained a large sum of cash, very likely an "off the business records" gift to tide his wife over any bankruptcy proceedings. Also, his jacket and hat were found neatly folded by the ships' railing, which could not have happened had his death been an accident or murder. His personal effects in his cabin were also neatly arranged, all this being strong circumstantial evidence that Rudolph was in control of events all through, and no other parties were involved. Diesel was hoping to secure a contract with the British, but tensions between Germany and Britain were high and he may have become depressed about his prospects. Cool story, i did not know all the details. Foul play would not surprise me at all. I would love to find an old Lister engine, or build one to run a low rpm generator. The one really interesting vegetable oil as possible fuel or conversion to biodiesel is castor oil, it does not gel nearly as easily in cold temps and has the highest saponification value of all veg oils. Now- what if you run an HHO cell, from a solar panel array, and aspirate veg oil or biodiesel with the gas to feed a simple diesel engine? What generally nit understood unfortunately about true Brown's Gas is the difference between mono -atomic oxygen versus its diatomic state, and the difference between simple DC electrolysis versus capacitative discharge using pulse width modulation. But you need trace hydrocarbons in your fuel to provide carbon lubricant and keep flame temperature moderated. Old school engine tech could serve well with a hybrid fuel concept.

In UK, it's easy to pick up old Listers at the stationary engine shows, off eBay or RealDiesels co. Starting at about £140 for the D series. If you like hybrid fuel arrangements, note that the petrol-paraffin version will run just fine on diesel if you add half a pint of petrol to 5 gals of diesel to bump up the octane, average (bit less in summer, bit more in winter)

I wish some would do some meaningful research. The official name for a _Diesel_ engine is the _compression ignition_ engine. Akroyd Stuart invented the compression ignition engine in England. Look it up.

I'm from Germany, I used to build diesel engine injectors and I'm now an engineer.
Rudolph Diesel _NEVER_ designed his engines to work on vegetable oil. His FIRST intent was to fuel it with coal dust slurry. That was too powerful, the engines exploded. At that time Germany WAS producing mineral based oil from both wells and coal feedstock (Fischer-Tropsch process.) That is MUCH more efficient than using vegetable oil. At a world expo a bystander asked "Can it run with peanut oil?" Diesel responded "It can." That does NOT MEAN he designed it to run on peanut or other vegetable oils. MY experience with it is vegetable oil causes damage in the long run.
Diesel suffered manic depression (called bipolar today) and sometimes manic depressives kill themselves. Sad but true.

Welcome to the channel! Happy to have experts come in and give context on the technical side. I'm no engineer, and while I do try my best to get the science right, it's always helpful to get a discussion going in the comments in case there was something I accidentally misrepresented in the video.
Chiefly, I never meant to imply that the diesel engine as we see it today was designed to run on vegetable oil. In my sources (especially the science direct one- it's where I got most of the technical info for the video), which I've linked in the video description, I too came to the conclusion that vegetable oil wasn't only not ideal for the engine, but it could also damage it. But throughout my research, I did come across the fact that after testing peanut oil on the engine, Diesel began to legitimately believe that it was possible to design an engine specifically for vegetable oil, as opposed to mineral oil. Yet, as far as I could tell in my research, this design would never come to fruition in his lifetime, forever staying an unfinished side project that would fuel conspiracies about his death but would also lay some of the groundwork for biodiesel's invention much later.
While I'm not an engineer, the last thing I want to do is obfuscate the truth, so I appreciate your comment for clarification.
As for his death, I completely agree. I believe he took his own life.

My family and I recently read a book called "The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel" by Douglas Brunt. In it, Brunt proposes the theory that the British government staged Diesel's murder so that he could help them develop their own diesel engines in secret.

In 1910 he chemical company Procter & Gamble discovered that seed oils could be converted to a solid fat. Which then propelled them into society as a viable food source. Prior to that they were not really considered fit for human consumption. Seed oils were considered a waste product of which only a small amount was used for industrial lubrication. Truth is they're not really fit for human consumption and probably responsible for a lot of modern health problems. It would have been so great if all these seed oils would have went into making energy instead of slowly ruining our health.

I saw a report on 60 Minutes Australia a few years ago that revealed that 1 passenger per month on average falls off a cruise ship somewhere in the World. SO the Simplest and Most OBVIOUS explanation here is that Diesel accidentally fell off that ship which would have easy if he had a few drinks and if the ship was swaying with along with the heavy waves.

At the time Diesel invented the engine, the oil industry had a huge problem of overproduction of medium-heavy distillate fractions. The only use at that time was as a raw material for gasification for the production of town gas together with coal. Diesel's invention allowed the valorization of a waste product allowing huge profits to the oil industry. Anyone who has dealt with vegetable oils knows that there is no commercial competition with mineral oils because the production costs of vegetable oils are incompressible, while diesel fuel can be sold at the price of a waste without affecting the profitability of the main business.

I don't believe the suicide story for a moment. He was an inventor who was seeing widespread success and implementation of his ideas. Few things in life are as exhilarating as that. Regardless of any personality flaws, this would have been one of the happiest times of his life.

Many of those with power and influence would do anything to further their power and influence. Nobody, but since diesel engines have been fine tuned to run on diesel fuel it'll likely be less efficient and cause damage to the engine in the long run so I really wouldn't advise it.

Forget electric. I'd like to see investor's support refining the technology of Bio-Diesel Fuel. Seed oils, animal fats, cooking oils are all used in Bio-Diesel. Currently, the fuel has to be protected w/ chemicals that'll prevent algae & growth of micro-organisms. These growths can become large enough to clog the injectors. Over any other energy source not including Nuclear, Bio-Diesel makes more sense for consumers & commercial. I'm not saying it's the 'silver-bullet'; that depends on the application, which could also justify all electric as well. Bio-Diesel has been over looked for to long.

I used to love diesel when diesel fuel was $0.50 a gallon. Now, it’s six in one hand, half a dozen in the other. Unless you own a 3/4+ ton truck and delete all the emissions crap.
I ran my diesel on new vegetable oil when it was 54p a litre.
