    I use a garden leaf blower to dry the engine and under cowl after washing. This drives out all the water and helps the dressing work and protect better.

    Great video! Thanks for purchasing our product for the video! Just for reference, the GUNK Shine Product is designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use than many other competitor products out there.

      GUNK Official - here is just a suggestion from a consumer who does not have your level of understanding about your product and who is here looking for education and practical techniques. I have absolutely no idea what this part of your comment means; "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use". The GREATEST thing about Born Again Boating's channel is that he is an accomplished, knowledgeable, master marine technician and he has the ability to take the complex and make it simple to understand. I am looking at the notes I took while watching this video and I had GUNK degreaser/cleaner and GUNK protector/shine on my shopping list. Somebody else commented that white vinegar is superior in dissolving salt. So as somebody who will never have Aaron's level of skill, or your in depth knowledge of GUNK'S product line, but who is determined not to stay completely ignorant either, since I have no idea what "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use" means I'm not sure whether to buy the GUNK products or just white vinegar? The marginal cost difference between the purchases is not significant to me, I want the "better" product to protect my 20+ year old small outboard. This video of Born Again Boating SOLD me on your GUNK products, now another commenter has me questioning that decision, and I am unable to use your comment to help me decide. Knowing me I'll probably buy, and use, all of the above just to make sure I get the best result.

    Automotive engine de-greaser does NOT dissolve salt. White vinegar or CLR Cleaner will dissolve calcium and salt deposits from engine and internal cooling parts, both harmless to plastics, rubber and metal parts - not to mention, white vinegar is very economical !

    • @thecentralscrutinizerr
      @thecentralscrutinizerr 3 года назад +2

      You can also combine equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar to remove efflorescence.

    Bought a new Yamaha 150 just over 3 years ago that sprayed all over its metal surfaces w/ CRC Corrosion Inhibitor (2 coats over a 24hr period). After 960 hours on that thing, I have no rust and the salt just comes right off with a hose. Hose the inside once a month and then a little Boeshield T-9 after, and the engine looks like its never been turned over!

    Probably a good idea to note that if you’re cleaning an older, carbureted outboard you’d need to be careful not to spray water around the carbs. You don’t want to get water in there or in any part of the fuel system.

    Now I’m going to sound daft!
    Cleaning is part of the pride of ownership. You’ve worked hard, spent a lot of money and have something to show for it. If you look after it you get a better connection with what is essentially an inanimate object. The big but, for all the naysayers, is that when you go to sell it yours will sell quicker and for more cash than the unloved heap of junk that’s also up for sale in the boatyard. If that’s not a good enough reason to look after and clean your boat, bike or car I don’t know what is.
    Great series of videos and I may be in a cooler part of the world but the water is still salty over here. Stay safe!

    Most of the newer engines have a garden hose port where you can attach a garden hose and no mouse ears. Will it flush the same way or do you have to still put on the mouse ears to flush through the thermostat and lower unit? Thanks

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +6

      Hello, nope, the flush port runs through the whole engine. No need for ear muffs, unless you plan on running the engine at RPM's higher than 1,000. Then you should put some muffs on it. Otherwise you can flush the engine all you want and even run it at idle without damaging anything :) Thank you!

It is worth mentioning that telltale has water when boat is in water and also when flushing with the muffs although boat motor has to be trimmed out a bit.
      Seems fine but wonder why I overheat when using flush port. All salt water so I flush after every trip

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 года назад +1

      Freshwater is nice :) A lot of times the cowling has a dampening foam on it and it usually doesn't get the build up like the engine does. So unless it's really bad, then a quick wipe down will clean out the cowling.

    I would really like to know how and why all that salt is in there. Like where is the water getting in from? Never seen that before except from a Honda I once had. That Honda was terrible for water leaking I the cowling

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +2

      A lot of times the water gets forced in depending on how the spray comes off the hull and the trim tabs. Even a transducer can cause a lot of spray up towards the cowlings. Plus, these two-part cowlings, aren't the most watertight cowlings. Don't get me wrong, I love these cowlings compared to the one-piece, extremely heavy cowlings. That's probably beacuse they are light and easy to mess with :) but then also whenever the seas are rough and you're fighting fish, just the wave action on the back of the boat can force water into the cowlings and then it just creates a salty engine lol

      No, it's a Wiggins and it's actually really nice. The tires don't seem to be holding up as well as you would think, but it's been pretty good for the most part.

      I wouldn’t. We don’t use them on our dirt bikes either. The pressure tends to get into connectors and is hard on gaskets ect.

      I have a 1987 2288 Cuddy Walk Around with a 4.3 L OMC Cobra sterndrive! It has been docked in salt water all summer every summer since I bought it in 1995! I did a re-power in 1998! I flush my engine and wash the engine apartment after every use! My engine looks just as good today as it did back then! The one piece OMC exhaust manifolds lasted me 10 years which then I replaced them with Direct replacement 1 piece stainless steel headers that have sacrificial Anodes! I will never have to replace them, They are just as good today as when I installed them in 08! Those headers were the best thing I have ever installed on an engine! Less heat, A lot lighter, More room in the engine compartment and better fuel economy! As well as an extremely long service life! I have been a mechanic for over 20 years! Due to my parents working I got to spend every summer with my grandparents at their Beachhouse! When my grandfather passed away in 1985 he left me his 1964 Thompson Chris Craft that had a all natural mahogany deck! I had to wash that boat down after every use and install a canvas cover that went from bow light to the transom and then over the engine cover! That is where I learned the importance of keeping your boat clean when boating in salt water! When I sold that boat in 1995 it shined just as good as it did in 1964! If anyone doubts my story shoot me your email and I will provide pictures covering a time span of over 40 years growing up on the water! Thank you Pop Pop and Grams for blessing me with the best 42 years a boy could ask for! RIP UNTIL WE FISH AGAIN! 🛥

      Hahah that's funny, I think most people have that same reaction :) They do get a little salty in there and that's a good idea. It's best to try and do it where it can sit and dry out for a day. I think up North it won't dry out as quick as it does down here lol

    • @BornAgainBoating

      Thank you! The blue grease is Johnson Evinrude Triple Guard Marine Grease ( Here's a link for it on Amazon: amzn.to/328IvD9 ) This is pretty good stuff, I like Mercury's High-Performance Grease too though: ( High Performance Grease: amzn.to/303EE8h Then their 2-4-C is good too: amzn.to/2LthKDc ) The only thing about Mercury's grease is that I don't think you can get it in a tube like you can the Evinrude stuff. Depends on how it's used. If used a lot, we've got clients that will put on 6K hours in about 8 years and then repower. So, for normal recreational use though, I'd say 20-30 years or 3-4K hours

    hi brother i was wondering which outboard mechanic school your Recommend im 21 and wanting to become a marine mechanic

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  5 лет назад +6

      Hello! Well that depends. I went to MMI and it was a pretty good school, but it cost $35,000! So, if you don't have the money, I don't really recommend you going into $40K in debt. Instead, you can go a different route, which is the route that I took to get into my first real shop.
      What you want to do is look around your area at all the marina's and dealerships that are close to you. Then go in 10-15 minutes before they open on Monday and see if they could use some help. Some of them will probably say no because you don't have any experience, but you just do that to all of them and do it each week until one of them gives you a job. Then once you get into one of the shops. Try and make friends with the oldest Technician there and just listen to everything they say! Try and do what they say too, make sure you are teachable and willing to work, listening to the way they tell you to do the job. Fast forward a couple years and you'll be a great Marine Technician making good money, going to school and getting manufacture certified!
