- How to add refrigerant to a home air conditioner system. In this video I show how to add refrigerant to a unit that is low on charge. This one also happened to be frozen over so before I could add any refrigerant I had to thaw out the system first.

Jay, I worked as a security Guard at a dead end job for years. I watched your videos on my night shifts so I can learn as much as I could. I felt so confident in what you taught me, I quit my job and went to hvac school in the year 2020. I did so well. P.s. they actually used a lot of your videos for training, especially how to use a multimeter. I have since graduated hvac school, received my epa universal certification, and I am currently working a union hvac job as a service tech. I really hope you get to read this, and I hope you know how much you have changed my life. Please never stop doing what you are doing!! You are and will forever be a role model for me! Same here. Hated my previous job and now I also want to get into hvac. If you don't mind sharing, how much were you making at the beginning? I am in FL, so hvac is always needed here.
@@00_UU my job before hvac was in about 27,000$ a year range. After going through school I started out as an hvac service tech around 35,000$ a year.

I watched this video to educate my self... a tech came over and said he does not carry R22 in his van, it is special order, and for the most part he said he would recommend a system flush and replace it with R410 .. a 3 thousand dollar minimum... I got a second opinion, and it was so different, the guy cleaned my coils and topped off a little bit of R22, and Voila, cool as a cucumber... great video, thanks
R22 is really old and the EPA has been phasing it out for years now. Their no longer making it anymore. Once whatever stock is gone its gone. Thats it no more R22.
Mechanics, HVACR technicians and plumbers are never to be trusted, unless you know them properly. Since they're the only ones who understand their craft they tend to be doing the devils work by making pay a ton of money for something so simple.
@@JoshSmith-wo7zw The system was later replaced with a new one running R410, the old system was recycled and I was told yes, it will be no more, but there is plenty of R22 to refill old systems that need it not for new systems being installed.
The same could be said about Doctors and scientist, with their bio weapons and fake vaxxes….
Hard to get the truth. As I see it, techs will say what the company wants them to say to get the profit they want which doesn’t mean they won’t do a good job but everything is at their convenience and of maximum charge to you.
Thankfully, I have an honest tech that didn’t tell me I needed a new system but suggested filling it and see how long it lasts. I’ve had to add refrigerant every two years. It’s been 10. Filled it today.
Jay, thanks to you I am able to charge my 1994 Trane unit that no one around here wants to service anymore. Everyone wants to quote me a whole new A/C system for my house. Your video makes it so easy to understand that I felt comfortable doing it myself. Now my unit is working like a charm!
38 years is a long time and unless you get free electricity in a hot summer day; you'll go broke pretty soon. Recharging your own unit is a crime. So don't try been a wise guy!

Exactly what I was looking for DIY, basic straight instruction that works. My r22 AC was not cooling and when I checked the psi. Mine was at 90 so following your video fixed it. Most other videos are hard to follow or understand for my level of experience.

@unseenone1152 yes, but it is still readily available for not expensive, $30/pound if you buy a 30lb tank. These people are installing ne r22 systems, they just need a top off to maybe get a little more life out instead of dropping 10k-15k+ It's absurd when the system still functions mostly.

I've fixed/recharged about 40 units over the past 2 weeks here in addition to my other maintenance duties. I've had to cut a few evaps out, replace them and/or change drain pans and in weeks prior, I retrofitted 2 new systems (evap and condensing units) to existing linesets/ductwork. I still have quite a few things lined up here at the apartment complex I work at. Old units. Lots of overtime. Thanks for the vids!

@@isabellagrisales5722 I haven't purchased any refrigerant yet. Nor have I done any maintenance yet. I'm still in the process of learning how to maintain it. Fortunately I have a family member that knows a lot about it. I will probably start this spring.

Hi Jay, as today’s Sunday Jun. 16 th, 2024 and the Father day and back about 3 weeks ago I’ve called A/C teachnician he charged 3 lbs of R-22 and costed me $320 dollars. Thus this Father day My house are cooling enough What I operated on Thermal stat. In my third month of schooling and just started our AC and Refrigeration theory. This video helped a lot!
You only need to study another 15 or twenty years to be proficient. It's a great trade but you need to get licenses and certifications along the way; too many new refrigerants are developed all the time and you have to learn the proper use and applications!

The HVAC guys at our shop gave me similar advice about adding R-22 to my Sweetheart's system. You are spot on with your advice! No more frozen A-Coil! Comfy in the hot summer weather!
If you are certified to handle refrigerants, you can use R407C as a replacement for R22 and a whole lot cheaper. The R22 around is mostly recycled anyway as its manufacture stopped about 10 years ago!

@@ssfouryou Sorry, I'm retired; it may be a generic replacement for R22 or R410A. check w/Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Association.
@@ssfouryou Yes and from what I read, it helps compressors to run at lower temperatures which will prolong the life of the compressor as it works a lower temperatures; it will probably same money with your electric bills; or so I hope!

ahh, the good ole days lugging up that 22 can on a rope along with the recharge machine and vac. Pump up to the phoenix roofs on a 120 degree day with the tar roofs feeling like 200 degrees and also brazing refrigerant lines. You literally had to take a soaking wet towel with you so you didn't get heat stroke on the roof. Eveything burned lol especially when kneeling down to work. Sucked. But good job showing this vid man. It takes me back.
My man I don’t care what nobody says this video was the best one I’ve seen on RUclips you kept it simple and easy and Laymans term so one who knows nothing could understand because it work for me and I was able to get my AC charged up and running on that video all the other ones I watch And I watched a lot of them, but this was the one thank you man and don’t worry about what nobody says cause you to man🥵

Thank you - i watched a number of similar video's & this one is by far the most helpful. Just achieved success at my house! Got an extra -8 degrees at the vent! Also - when i removed the protective cap on the red side of the condenser's valve it hissed - there was pressure between the valve & cap - so i bet that's the cause of the leak. This fall / winter i'll vacuume out the refregerant & replace the valve. Thanks a tonne! FYI - i knew there was a leak already because i'd had a pro out 2 years ago & they identified the issue as a leak using all the tools. So in my case, I think it was reasonable for me to use this simpler method. Also, for anyone going to try this after attending RUclips-Uni - it was very helpful for me to write down a list of instructions, things to check and potentially stop / quit ect - instead of trying to go and do it from memory.
They also sell a valve core removal tool that can be used to tighten or replace the valve core while the unit is still under pressure. That way, you won't lose your refrigerant charge.

Before you remove the refrigerant charge, check access points; evaporator and condenser coils as well as all copper connections. Look for signs of oil.
@@johnnyriser8519 True, they work if you have enough room where the service valves are located. That core remover is great but it will cost at least $ 100.-

what do you mean it's not allowed? All these DIY videos have saved me 1000's of dollars over the yrs. F anyone who has a problem with that. Anyone that tells you or leads to believe it's not allowed F them. It's my house my unit I do what I want.
Only handling refrigerant is not allowed. You have to be licensed. Everything else like changing out parts or electrical trouble shooting is allowed for DIY.
@@FunDuude EPA certification required when working on r22 or purchasing. You can however charge a 410a system non certified.

Very informative video, the tech put the refrigerant last July and this year I have the same problem I’m assumed there is a leak somewhere
Make sure anyone who comes to "fix" it doesn't just recharges the system. They must find and repair the leak before adding gas.

Not if you do it the way portrayed in this video. This guy stated how it just to basically help the system along until it could be replaced. If you were to add refrigerant your own home system (and want it to actually operate for any length of time) then there is more to it than what this guy has done. If a system is low then there is a reason and that reason (i.e a leak) needs to be addressed. Furthermore an AC system is pretty picky about it's charge level which is why we use certain numbers like superheat and/or subcooling to make certain that we have the correct charge in a system. Just adding until the suction gauge shows above freezing is asking for problems especially if there is already a known leak. If you overcharge and start slugging that compressor than it's going to cost you big time.
Learned a ton of new stuff watching this. Very good. I usually grab some food and just watch you do your thing. Learning a lot.

Nice vids straight to the point but would have been nice to teach others also how to charge by ambient 80° outdoor plus 30, your high side was right at 110° and your low side 40° spot on for a quick temporary charge up. Great work and awesome videos man!!!

I'm an HVAC student about to help with my first install. I've been binging your videos covering the basics for a while now. I'd really like to see the proper way to charge a unit using superheat and subcool. At school they taught us the "add 30 degrees to ambient temp" trick and it works well, but I want to know the more professional way as well.

17:02 I always like to wrap a rag around the valve when i crack it so that never happens. but good call on the low loss fittings. I hated getting frostbite before I got my own pair
Adjust the depressor on your hose so that it’s even or a little below the washer you will never get frost bite again.
Also change the washers every 90 days if you are using your gauges every time you do a call.

Hey. My name's Dylon. And I was wondering if you could sharing some advice with a guy that's down on his luck. I actually graduated school about two years back. Found out that I want to go back into this trade or try to get into this trade. Iv got to re new my apprenticeship.. I don't have my EPA. I'm trying to do a online course to get a refresher (ironically I learn more from your videos then the actual online course so I really appreciate your content) I'm at a loss here. Should I keep doing with what I doing and study,study,study and eventually study for my EPA? Or should I see if I can see if a journeymen or contractor would take me under his/her wing? Plz and thank you.
Is connecting the high side optional if you are just charging through the low side? I have no TXV and only care about the low side / superheat it seems? Thanks your videos are helpful
Yes, it's ok. Some units only have 1 service valve on low side. A measure on the high side is just "nice to know" it's not way off the clock

Great vid as usual!! Please thank your dear wife for being the best camera person in the world. She probably reads your comments and tells u the ones that should maybe get more than a heart. As u were adding gas instead of liquid your tank pressure was dropping and towards the end of charging hardly anything was going across. I would have done little shits of liquid
Hi Bill! Thank you for the comment! My wife is indeed really awesome! :) And I agree, I actually often add R22 in liquid too even though the preferred way is vapor, for the reason that you mentioned. That was my mistake not to show an example of throttling in liquid refrigerant. Maybe in a future video..
Friendly advice; drill hole in wall of coil big enough to stick a cheap scope camera. Works to see if dirty coil plus.

IMPORTANT... limit drill depth so as not to accidentally destroy the evap coil!!! That being said, he does not own the system so (technically) drilling ANY unnecessary holes would be destroying another persons property.
@@jotu173 No it wold not. The evap being inside the plenum is an all too common problem. The best course of action during the repair would be to cut an access panel in that plenum not only for your immediate use but also for future maintenance. This is a necessity and well within the scope of work required for the repair that you were HIRED to do.
