Excellent comparison and review! Ty for this. And I agree, all changes made seemed correct aside from 'poisoning' Theo. I feel if they had the cookies out on a plate, and Alice discovers it had peanut in them by looking at its packaging in a trash can, or something of that vein, would have made It feel more ambiguous..?
Thank you for the comparison! I totally think they could have done more with the material in the book for the movie…or at least change the trailer 😅 I felt like I already knew what was gonna happen after watching the trailer. The book sounds like it’s way more dynamic 😮
As soon as you mentioned the godparent situation, I figured she was going to kill them and take their son lol. I'm not a fan of the ending, I think what happened before it was interesting though. Kind of wish the sorry had explored the idea of how messed up the whole situation was especially if Theo's mom was actually being overly paranoid. This reminds me how I felt when I was watching this one movie where the main guy had visions, and everyone thought he was mentally ill only for the visions to actually be true. I remember thinking, but what if he had been mentally ill, how should a situation like that be handled?
Yeah so many things early on make it clear where the story is going in the book. And yeah, if the twist was that Celine wasn't up to anything at all, that would have been interesting. It seems in the movie, Celine wasn't up to anything until the very end whereas in the book she started scheming very early on. So with the movie maybe in some ways Alice was overreacting to an extent...? I could be misinterpreting the movie though with that idea.
Well in the movie it is said at the beginning when Alice freaks out about her son disappearing with Max and a box of cookies, Celine is like « it’s okay he knows he can’t eat it » and Alice says « Yes but he is also curious and he really wishes he could eat one, he waits for an opportunity to do so ». So i think this kinda makes sense later for Theo eating a cookie and Alice blaming Celine like « You knew he wanted to taste it, i told you he just waited the perfect opportunity/temptation » So for me it worked🤔 Anyway thanks for this video! Just watched the movie, was looking for reviews and i found your video, i was happy to see the differences with the book^^ I agree that the movie sounds better. It really kept misleading you and you’re not sure what will happen. Is Alice crazy? Is Celine really dangerous? Does she want to kill Theo so her friend will lose her son too as a revenge? Or does she just want to take him away and have him as her new son? And omg the ending😟 tho I agree with you, in the end it’s strange for the grandma death. Like… the husband said HE found the box with pills and Alice is like « no I found them I’m not crazy I found them… » it is supposed to mislead you into believing she might be crazy… but in the end she is not… so… this part remains confusing😅 but for the rest it was really good 😊
I watched the 2018 Mothers' Instinct on tubi last summer, so maybe check there every once in a while or you can get notified through justwatch if it comes up on streaming. I haven't read the book but this new film sounds pretty much the same as the Belgian film, from what I can remember. It always makes me curious why a new adaptation takes from the original adaptation rather than more fully adapting the book or doing something different!
I haven’t read the book or watched the movie but it’s good they cast 2 actresses distinct. It’s good they cut the reason the couple met it doesn’t really fit. I think one thing that could have made the allergy accident work would be for Alice to tell Celine when she’s dropping of Theo for babysitting don’t forget Theo is allergic to nuts. Usually if a character has an allergy it’s said as forshadowing before an event happens with an allergy like in Monster in Law lol and this was more of a guilty pleasure movie. It would have gave the viewer more context if Celine knew about the allergy or not
We had the scene early on when Alice is freaking out about her son being near the peanut butter cookies at the start, so that was a bit of foreshadowing.
Alice having been 'sent away' by her husband for PPD played a big role in me thinking maybe Celine was just grieving, not dangerous. I assume Celine killed the MIL so there were no remaining family. I really enjoyed this movie and like that they focussed on the women as Hathaway & Chastain were really able to carry the plot. Psychotic Hathaway was terrifying!
Thanks for commenting! Yeah Chastain and Hathaway are incredible and they make this movie worth watching! If you haven't seen Eileen you should check it out- another somewhat psychotic Hathaway performance!
In both book and movie Alice's parents were dead and the grandma died in the movie, and I guess that was all simon had. The movie has a scene in the end when they are speaking to an attorney and Theo tells the man he wants Celine to adopt him. In the book she was his godmother though so legally she would get him if they and Ernest died

Can’t wait to come back and watch this once I’ve watched the movie!
😊
I was looking forward to this one just from the actresses. Thank you for covering it ✨🌈✨
You're welcome!
Did you like the movie?
at 14:36 and 25:00 I say Alice when I mean Celine

That's so annoying when trailers give away too much!

Yeah that's true about the cookies! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I'm glad you liked my video 😊

Oh thanks for sharing! Yeah that's interesting they didn't bother modifying the script much 🤔

@@WhytheBookWins Was Celine in that scene. Ah kids and peanut butter cookies lol

@@WhytheBookWins Yes, I loved Eileen! She and McKenzie were an amazing team. I didn't realize the range Hathaway had until I saw her in these two.
How did Alice gets custody? Did she forge the will? Theo didn’t have other relatives?

The judge said he had no living family and we know that is why Celine killed the grandmother.
If you don't mind me asking what's your height.
