Extra Impetus 4 has the lists for Seleucids among many others across the Hellenistic period Wargames Vault have PDF versions. Funnily enough my favourite version of Impetus is the original Basic Impetus. I think this is because it seemed to be envisioned as a larger scale battle than the following full versions (mainly to do with Roman line relief in which I've come to prefer that aspect being abstracted out for the Legions to deal with that themselves). In my quest for rules I have (which I tend to play solo) enjoyed Lost Battles but currently I love the newish set Strength & Honour. I also go back and forth working on homemade rulesets. Have you attempted homebrew rules?
@@TonyEmeryPG20mm to answer your homebrew question, yes my group and I created a modified version of hail Caesar that we played regularly for years but I am trying to branch out and find a new regular ruleset that we can all enjoy that won’t require any extra work on my end 😂
@@mitchsminisyes I get where you're coming from when I've been testing home made ones I then go back to a fully functional published set soon after 😂 I'm pleased with Strength & Honour for the Roman period but I also want to make a simple homemade rulesets that can be pretty much memorized and played off 1 sheet.
I have Revenge, purchased in the 1990's, but can't remember ever playing a game. At the time I plumped for Armati instead. I suspect you will find it dated as rule writing has moved on in the last thirty years. A more recent set called 'Sword and Spear' might interest you. Agree with your remarks on the burden of tradition borne by FoG - so often the wargaming 'establishment' (grognards or other epithets might apply) have acted to stifle innovation. At least Warlord smashed that barrier at the cost of reducing the historical flavour for the sake of playability. Anyway, look forward to your reviews and also would be interested in your take on Napoleonic rules.
@@RalphAstley thank you for the information on Revenge! I saw your sword and spear videos on your channel a year or two ago I will have to look into getting those rules as well. I also saw your video about casualty figures and I agree that they add flavor to the tabletop and sell immersion, I plan on doing some casualty figures when I get the majority of my Seleukids finished
The Revenge ruleset looks interesting. There are a few too many of these antiquity to 1500 AD rules, it also creates a feedback loop in historical gaming that warfare in this entire period was the same throughout just because it was fought with melee weapons, archery, and horses. I have Baroque which is the later Renaissance version of Impetus. It works pretty well once you have it down but the wording can be clunky. Warlord rules don't take the games seriously enough. Yeah, its a game, but a little bit of historical atmosphere in the rules goes a long way and Warlord doesn't deliver that without a lot of house-ruling.

Good discussion, I definitely agree Hail, Caesar! leaves a lot to be desired. The quest for the perfect ruleset is never ending.

@@Corvinuswargaming1444 I agree! When I do post a hail Caesar video I will have to include the house rules we’ve made 🤣
