I dunno when I was presented why not, whoever was in charge said "its too obvious" I kinda agreed and understood it, it wasn't a political thing it was the man's artistic choice not to, I think back then I had respect for the series and the narrative it wanted to tell. now? eehhhhhhh.....

It's a game too it's obviously not going to be 100 percent realistic, sure yusake might not be correct in this game but they used him and some things as "inspiration"
They did exactly what the Japanese were asking for. Most of them don’t care that Yasuke was in the game, it’s not a big issue. What made them mad, was that they mistakenly believed ac was historically accurate for some reason. All they wanted was for Ubisoft to say it wasn’t historically accurate, which they did.
@@ApsmneShsbshu Exactly its not 100 percent accurate they just used some bits and pieces of some inspiration to give there game that little bit of flare
They never messed up. Well not for the game. Have you ever played an AC before? Before you start there is always the comment "everything is fictional". For the last 20 years. I mean, if you believe an AC is real, not their fault I think And people are spreading more fakes than anything else: "Assassin's Creed Shadows debate somehow reaches Japanese government ministries, who reportedly remind everyone that historical fiction isn't really their concern at all". I mean... I understand creator have to make money somehow but fake news?
@Slic4Not that's such bullshit, AC has always had tried to be historically accurate when it comes to real people, and they were never playable and your playable characters have the race that makes sense in context to the region and history, but they went out of their way to get the one black guy in Japanese history they could in some way claim was a samurai and make him playable too. It's so blatantly woke. It's purposeful and you're doing exactly what they want; damage control.
@@Sancsteq so what about Ezio in the turkish/ottman empire? (He wasn't turkish and Muslim, right?) And idk why playable or not playable makes a difference but what about the Borgias in AC2? What about Pope Rodrigo Borgia in AC2 who fought Ezio? What about Makaveli and Blackbeard? Robespierre? Jack the Ripper? Non of them were accurate. I'm not making anything, you are making more about it then it is. I mean, we are talking about a game what clearly says in every single GAME everything is fiction, characters, events etc. That doesn't mean they never existed but that's a fictional story. It's like you're complaining about almost every war shooters because there were certain characters and events, but in the end it didn't have to happened that way. LA Noir, for example, in the game there were events that really existed, but they were adapted to the game and in the end we got a fictional story with events that did happen maybe like that. The same with Eternal Sonata, where even the protagonist really existed, Town of Light etc. This happens relatively often in games, even in books and so on... The only point I understand is playing a black samurai in Japan. I understand not every person likes that but everything else was finest cherry picking.
@@Slic4Notthey did they used “it was never fact” as a way to cover up they obliterated the game putting a black guy as a main character in Japan and a 🌈 person as the second character. Both are not accepted or the prime example of people in Japan so it’s considered disrespectful. It would be equivalent of a white guy being the main character in a game taking place in Kenya.
@@Ultimategc13 You misunderstood something. Not the female character is homosexual , both are everything and it's up to you. Like the same with Cassandra, same with Eivor, same with Bayek, yep the same with every AC Rpg. It's up to you, what you want. And btw it's not even a secret that many many samurais were gay or had *** with other men. Idk what you mean with "was never a fact" I mean, it was never a fact. They said he "you are going to play a deadly shinobi and a legendary samurai in AC Shadows", the important part is "in Assassin's Creed Shadows", they never said that Yazuke was the same in real life as he is in the game, that was Lockley who said he was definitely a samurai. The same with the interview where was said that you will meet historical figures, for example Oda Nobunaga. And what's wrong with that? You meet historical characters, whether they are portrayed accurately or not. The point about the accurate was about the world building from the world director Stephanie-Anne and people a mixing now stuff together. The full interview is still online, check it up. The biggest problem was the translation into Japanese, which is what people are so upset about. It says that events will be played true to the original. In english it says you will play events from that time(X box twitter page). Nothing about true to the original. The problem was the translation and their japanese translator. And to your last point, like I said before. We had Ezio (Italian) in Ottoman empire, definitely not whitish country. A Norwegian in England, an English(?) in the Caribbean. And yes, we already had games where a white dude played the main in an african country, Far Cry 2 for example. And no, it's not the same as Cleopatra. There they took a character and changed her skin color. That was deeply disrespectful
I think this is the first time they have made a playable protagonist in an AC game an existing historical person. They always kept historical people as people you meet in the game. It would have been best that they keep the samurai character as just a character you met in the game. If they really wanted to have a black character as the protagonist then make a fictional person for the role.
Would have been almost impossible for this game. Cause a black man would stand out to much in ancient japan. The only man it could be is Yasuke...but he was never a samurai, he was a baggage carrier.
This. I keep telling this to make people realize that Ubisoft chose to have Yasuke as a playable character for virtual signaling purpose but people keep dismissing it as discrimination. Every AC protagonist has always been fictional character native to the setting most of the time, but there has been no Asian male protagonist. We already have a female Asian assaasin in AC Chronicles China.
core of all this mess with Ubisoft game boils down to Thomas Lockley's fabricated fake HISTORICAL book as long as game based closely on Lockley's book this just keep going on forever, never stop.
I am Japanese. Since Yasuke's master was Oda Nobunaga, whether Yasuke was a samurai or not is a trivial issue for Japanese people. Japanese people are angry at the act of disrespecting the history of UBI, infringing on cultural properties and copyrights, and are angry at the lack of a concrete apology. Freedom of expression should be protected, but we must also take responsibility for what happens.
Consulted historians like the discredited Thomas Lockley? Can relate to the frustration japanese have about appropriation, because my culture has also been milked for entertainment. And everytime someone has pointed out it's harmful to depict my people or our history a certain (inaccurate) way, they tout "respect" and "admiration", or "we just wanted to celebrate your culture, you should really be thanking us for bringing in more interest!" This Ubisoft response is the basic appropriation response 101.
They said their intention was never to make a historically accurate game. Same as ac1, through ac shadows. They made this very clear. It wasn’t even an apology, it was telling people that they were wrong. They thought ac was supposed to be historically accurate, when it never has been.
@@ApsmneShsbshu Then why did they said before that they hired a "Japanese history consultant" to get a good accurate representation of Japan and then it turns out that their man who helped them make the game was a book writer who made a fan fiction and changed Wikipedia text of Yasuke since 2015... And let's not forget that every single Assassin's Creed before Shadows had a mad up not real historian figure as their main protagonist but Assassin's Creed Shadows is the FIRST game in the series that breaks that rule, I wonder why...
@@ApsmneShsbshu Also no hate man, I do agree with you when it comes to the older Assassin's Creed games. They never claimed it was historical accurate at all but even back than they put way, way more effort and research in these cultures be it Italian, France... History. I will give you an example, they even messed up some buildings in the game and made them look more Chinese than Japanese, that's how little effort they put in their research. While for example Ghost of Tsushima got only praise even from Japan itself from the place Tsushima itself! Ubisoft clearly couldn't make a mad up new characters in Sengoku Era Japan and make him black, so they choose Yasuke and tokenized him into that role.
@@LalaDepala_00 Its like..... say some Asian movie maker wanted to replace Rosa Parks with a white man modeled after Trump, and rewrote the entire movement from that centered around whites and Asians, and acted all "This is the true history of the black rights movement, okay maybe not I dunno lmao"

I think other parties should be able to voice their opinions too. I'm Chinese, and I'm very concerned by the state of Assassin Creed Shadow. Because I know they have an upcoming plan setting in China, I fear so much how they're going to butcher that one, seeing what they're doing to this Japanese version.
I think the problem with this game is it was already deep into development before Ubisosft had a major policy shift a couple of years ago. Now they are trying to make games which cater to very specific player bases rather than trying to make games which appeal to as wide a demographic as possible, ie trying to please everyone, which end up kind of pleasing no one.

As a Japanese person, I always enjoy the quirky depictions of Japan in fiction, but I don't appreciate it when they are used for political agendas. I'm not boycotting, but I'm simply not interested in Ubisoft open world games anymore. They are at least 10 years too late for this.
I'm gonna be honest with you, as a western I don't care about this social justice warrior dramma some people unleashed, I just want to see more gameplay of the game because it looks promising and I want to play it
Never have I ever thought I would see a game dev company has to apologize to an entire government. The last closest thing this type of stuff happened was like when the Mexican government got in trouble with the Japanese government (completely coincidently this involves Japan as well) because of a big fight in DragonBall Super so the Mexican Government hosted a big get-together event to watch the anime fight on a giant screen.
I think that the biggest deal was that some guy was editing some info about the history of the real Yasuke person. They were changing it to match what they were showing in the game. The Japanese government was starting a petition to get the game fully stopped over this misinformation. Also, Japanese people are very traditional, respectful/respectable people. It was an insult to them to have some rando from Ubi trying to change their history.
Ubisoft are a bunch of clowns. They couldn't just give us an AC game set in Feudal Japan. People have been asking for a AC Japan for years, it would've been a slam dunk if they had just played it straight. But they just could not help themselves with this Yasuke nonsense. They knew people would have an issue with it, particularly people in Japan. It just boggles my mind.
Is it "their win" no, but this is one of the ONLY ways to shut this crap down. Not diversity in games, but forced diversity with no consideration for the fans, the actual history, OR for caring about telling a good story FIRST and foremost, stuff like this has to happen. This stuff has to happen, and bad sales has to happen, otherwise these kinds of people will run wild(brother) on games the same way they have on Hollywood and turned it into mostly boring slop it's been lately.
Regardless of how people feel about the two playable characters I just want to see Ubisoft stay ten toes down with their decision, since that’s their vision and let the market show how much they really care about this move. If anything I just feel like Ubisoft is playing with people by using the post to continue making the game’s name relevant. Some people sure love to talk about it whenever they get a chance
Imagine a jester in medieval times... Thats Yasuke in that time and age and this is not an insult this is how Nobunaga saw him... he liked to show him around towns, put him on spot for people to see him, it was like an attraction, not like a zoo, but more like "look at this guy that i acquired" just so people can talk about Nobunaga, he went against the grain always, giving stipends, promotions etc left and right to the people nobody knew nor were deserving of it... i mean why do you think he got betrayed at the end....americans are uneducated about their own country let alone about HISTORY of other CONTINENTS...you have only been around for like 200 years...xd
Yup not sure what Ubisoft was thinking.. Yasuke was a servant to a jesuit. Nobunaga asked for an introduction because he had never seen a black person before. Nobunaga paraded him around like a curiosity and after Nobunaga died Yasuke was carted back off to the jesuits. That is about the extent that's even known about him. They couldn't find any inspiration from the hundreds of Japanese rhonin? The Japanese would have reacted better if they had used even William Adams.
I saw some Japanese RUclipsrs in English about AC Shadows. The biggest complaint they have is in the presentation of AC Shadows as a historically correct game while it's like all other AC games just fiction with historical elements. It's the first time AC took as a main character a person that existed. If they took a random black dude and let him be a warrior I believe the Japanese would see this as fiction. But no take a real person, portray him as a samurai and hope that Japan keeps quite. 😅
Since you invited especially Japanese commentators, I'd be glad to offer this perspective: Historical accuracy isn't the issue for us. Their apology is therefore still missing the point. We know it's a work of fiction, so our beef is NOT that. The issue is just simply the lack of a Japanese male protagonist in, yes, your work of fiction set in Japan. We Japanese gamers (and many others around the world) wanted a Japanese male protagonist, regardless of it being fiction or non-fiction. That's all! As long they got that part right, all the other problems of inaccuracy can be dealt with with more leniency and understanding. Therefore, the only thing that can fix this whole mess now is nothing less than a Japanese male protagonist, together with Naoe. Make Yasuke's arc into a DLC. Everyone will be happy with that outcome, and the game will sell much better in Japan than it would otherwise. Be smart and do it, Ubisoft.
Sadly, even if they did do that, *someone* would likely just sue them for "false advertising" due to the fact that they advertised Yasuke as a main character. Basically, that whole ship basically sailed the moment they promoted Yasuke as a main character.
GoT exists. Because GoT copied almost all of its mechanics from assassins creed, Ubisoft needed something to differentiate themselves from the competition. And Yasuke just has a cool story.
I completely agree with your opinions. I can’t help but think of the movie “The Last Samurai” with good old Tom Cruise. I’m glad that the Japanese spoke up to Ubisoft. Ubisoft good luck.
Your Harlem example is spot on. I’m American my parent’s Moroccan. Takes me out sooo much when I saw black/asians & native looking ppl in Valhalla. I almost stopped playing it. It doesn’t make sense & these ppl know it doesn’t
Hmmm, Interesting take. Nice content. I'm an American whose been living in Japan for 20 plus years. I've been speaking, reading and writing Japanese for more than half my life. Meh, the folks I've talked to aren't too worked up about this. That's my take on it. Peace
The Japanese people have spoken they said they don’t want this game and they’re trying to ban it. I don’t blame them. Movie off is trash. I was excited for outlaws and then they had to go back in there and diddly DEI and what not.
Been living in Japan for almost 12 years now, my wife is Japanese and I have a 5 year old son who is mixed. Japan as a nation is very proud of “being Japanese” deep down. I showed a few of my Japanese friends the trailer and they were all like “that doesn’t make sense.” Or they laughed. For me personally I don’t care but I can understand why Japanese audiences are getting pissed. It comes across xenophobic but after living here so long I think it’s just a miss understanding outside Japan. You hear comments like “did you know Japan has 4 seasons?” Or “when are you going home” or “oh your son is half” Comments that used to annoy me but I think it’s just ignorance.
the only thing that could save that mess is ubisoft delaying and completely rewriting the game and have an actual japanese samurai main character instead of yasuke. they can still have him in the game as a side character who serves his master if they want him in the game.
The fact that they replaced an Asian man as the protagonist and there are people act like normal and even defending it just proved the normalization of discrimination against Asian men in Western media. The Japanese government literally had to step in.
I live in Tokyo and there are several local RUclipsrs making videos about it. They are doing them in the best English they can speak, which tells you how big of a deal it is.
Japanese history has been kept accurately for thousands of years historians would be on the battlefield untouched just a record the event so getting the history for Japanese culture is actually extremely easy. That’s probably why they have such an issue but at the end of the day it’s a goddamn game And that’s the game they’re willing to make don’t buy it
You can't please them no matter what you do. They freaked out about a "white guy" going on a black people "killing spree" in Africa. Then when Capcom changed it by adding Sheva and a bunch of white dude zombies to the mix and balance things out, they then proceeded to complain about there being white people in Africa... the whole thing is a joke.
@@-Down-D-Stairs- They would still find a way to get offended and triggered by the game just as they did with Hogwarts Legacy and are now doing with AC Shadows. They would try to "cancel" (whatever that means) RE5 as well.
It's funny, because had they stick to their main formula of not using an actual historical figure as a playable main character, this wouldn't have happened. Had the only main character is Naoe, they wouldn't have to deal with all this bullshit and lose so many players.
They look for one person in history to justify their decision. If you set game in feudal Japan don't be surprised when I think your non-Japanese character is anything other than trying to check a box.
I want ubisoft to change so that they can make banger games like prince of persia the lost crown was instead of the bs we see from them now while no one loses their jobs as well. I get the hate but wishing companies to go bankrupt is not it.
The difference is they didn't use Yasuke as his name and didn't make him a main character but a side character. Ubisoft should'v make Yasuke a side character, too.
This is such a stupid situation. Who cares about the historical correctness of an assassins creed game? We never cared this much before. Just feels like for some odd reason we REALLY care right now. When similar historically incorrect oddities existed in the other assassins creeds before this.
In Japan this is a very niche controversy, is no main stream or anything, Ubisoft games aren't that popular, the gaming tastes are a bit different, and I wonder if this is the reason why this "apology" has been released in English as if is for someone else, I guess what rubs some people in Japan the wrong way is the westernization, embellishment, historical liberties, and copyright infringement.
It all just seems so unnecessary. Whose brilliant idea was it to make an Assassin's Creed game focused around a character not representative of the culture in which the game is based? First time they've done this to my knowledge. I think it's completely fair for Japanese players to feel slighted. It would have been just as baffling a decision to have made AC Origins about a Japanese immigrant. They could've avoided this whole thing. Ubisoft has really been dropping the ball these past few years.
AC is toast! Majority are tired of this woke insanity. Fire the entire team! This game could have been massive and they destroyed it! Ubisoft is in big trouble..
We all know they are just gonna put a disclaimer at the beginning about the resemblance of historical figures and how the game is a work of fiction. I will be surprised if they change anything. Besides if you take a stroll through the Nintendo eShop you'll find a bunch of games that use Japanese culture however they want but they aren't big like Ubisoft so nobody cares.
Yasuke was a real person who was over a foot taller than the average samurai, he described as being as strong as 10 men. He is the star of several anime and manga. Not mention he was already in several video games released by Japanese developers bit odd that people have a problem in assassin creed of all games
You seemed to have missed the main point of the controversy, which is that Yasuke was never a samurai. He was really just a servant/slave. The book written about him, by a white guy, which is where his entire "story" comes from, was almost entirely fabricated. That author just recently deleted all his social media and is being completely discredited by the Japanese university where he worked.
Remember, Japan loves Ghost of Tsushima and western media kept hating on the game. AC: Shadows has been rejected by Japan and western media is trying to defend it.
Sony: gets praised for ghost of tsushima and actually does things right and gets the thumb up from the Japanese. Ubisoft: yo, check out Yaskue mix tape.

I'm also a white guy, living in America. I think Japanese history and culture is extremely fascinating and I am very much into it. In my humble opinion, whether someone who is criticizing this game is actually Japanese doesn't matter. Anyone with proper knowledge and respect for world history should be able to criticize the historical inaccuracies and have those criticisms be valued and respected. From what I understand, there is very little to almost zero evidence to suggest that Yasuke was a legitimate Samurai. Yes, the Assassin's Creed games have never been 100% historically accurate, but Ubisoft is taking this situation to an absolutely retarded and unnecessary level of ridiculousness. All they had to do was make an Assassin's Creed game that was set in Japan and starred Japanese characters. If they wanted Yasuke to be in there, then have him make a cameo or be a side character to have a little interaction with, not one of the two main protagonists.
Why can't he be the one of the main characters? It's not like Japanese samurai games don't already exist. And they already explained why they chose him. And also there IS a Japanese lead. I just don't un the problem

They said they looked into historical figures as inspiration for a fantasy story, yet later they say they want to be authentic to the culture? Which is it? You can't be both, you're either fantasy or you're authentic.
You can absolutely do both. You can set a story up in the Sengoku era and have it be a fantasy story. Have you heard of Onimusha? Sengoku Basara/Devil Kings? Date Masamune did not handle 3 swords in each hand like an ancient Japanese Wolverine let me tell you. You can set up a story going along the lines of the unification of Japan in the real Sengoku era but have fantasy elements, absolutely. If you're talking Steampunk Sengoku era, that could be done too, but then historical accuracy absolutely goes out the window.
@@tubguinace You can still be authentic to history because of the little details that involved the culture during that period in time. Just because historical figures did something different or it featured fantasy people who did or didn't do something to what was recorded, that doesn't mean the fantasy still wasn't rooted in the different elements that defined the era of the time. The architecture, the mannerisms and customs of people at that time, the food they ate and the drinks they drank, their clothing, etc. can still be historically accurate of that time period but a fantasy story happened within that setting. That's kind of the point with "historical fiction". So to your initial point wanting to be "authentic to the culture" and having historical figures be inspiration for a fantasy story, you can absolutely do both. I'll give you another case in point - "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe.
@@SleepyNightOwl That would just be fiction inspired by history, not authentic, authentic means EVERYTHING about it is true to the source, if anything fantastical happens then it's no longer that. Historical Fantasy, is just fantasy in a historical setting or featuring a historical character, you can be authentic to the small details as you said but as a whole it is no longer authentic.
@@tubguinace I was answering your initial point in your first post but I see that you are continually moving the goalposts so as not to concede any ground. What you're talking about is historical accuracy but I won't waste any more of your or my time. Nothing more to say here, have a good day.
If ubisoft were to completely make a new character to replace yasuke would people play it then like they try to take out most of the historical inspiration and make it a game from complete scratch

"Assassin's Creed Shadows debate somehow reaches Japanese government ministries, who reportedly remind everyone that historical fiction isn't really their concern at all".
We already have a female Asian assaasin in AC Chronicles China.
core of all this mess with Ubisoft game boils down to Thomas Lockley's fabricated fake HISTORICAL book
as long as game based closely on Lockley's book this just keep going on forever, never stop.
And everytime someone has pointed out it's harmful to depict my people or our history a certain (inaccurate) way, they tout "respect" and "admiration", or "we just wanted to celebrate your culture, you should really be thanking us for bringing in more interest!"
This Ubisoft response is the basic appropriation response 101.

The last closest thing this type of stuff happened was like when the Mexican government got in trouble with the Japanese government (completely coincidently this involves Japan as well) because of a big fight in DragonBall Super so the Mexican Government hosted a big get-together event to watch the anime fight on a giant screen.
I remember when Ghost Recon Wildlands came out the Bolivian government filed a formal complaint with France about it.
@ENDERWS if legal action was taken, thats another example lol
Great vid RGT -As an Asian American, I appreciate your views and understanding as to why folks are upset.

Nobunaga was also a boy lover, as were many samurai in that time. The game doesn’t need to be that accurate
Why didnt they include a male Japanese samurai? I hate modern video game companies.

Also, the unapologetic official remarks about all this towards the Japanese public. Yikes, what a piece of work the CEO 😄 🤣 😂
All of this is for entertainment purposes. Ubisoft is just embellishing some details for that purpose. It's just like movies and TV shows that use the term "Based on True Events" Some details are blown up for the entertainment of the audience. Obviously, you're always gonna offend someone.
I'm think you're incorrect about the evidence for Yasuke.
Why can't he be the one of the main characters? It's not like Japanese samurai games don't already exist. And they already explained why they chose him. And also there IS a Japanese lead. I just don't un the problem

Feel bad for asian bros that wanted to play as an asian samurai :/
The game is "inspired" by historical events and also its a game, if its enjoyable im going to play it. And it being a game how many put there are 100% realistic
imagine if you see an asian dude do you salute to him always?
it was weird to see a NPC bowing to Yasuke in the trailer.
Yasuke should have been a supporting character or a DLC story character.
i'm japanese and i might buy the game to see how ubisoft is gonna tell about japan.
but not for a full price.🤔

Missed opportunity to not introduce the black Samurai with Tokyo Drift
What are you talking about. This affects Americans. DEI is an American phenomenon. Every fucking corporation has this. It was there to appease black people not for people who aren't asian to get a win for criticizing it.
It's not an apology. It's more like a ... sorry, not sorry type of thing! 🙂
Why no one gets mad at movies like Dragonball Evolution., The Last Samurai, Stuck 2007, Gods of Egypt, 2010 film "Prince of Persia, there's hundreds of films that had White people play Asians, African Americans etc.. but it gets swept under the table, and what kills me, is some of the people complaining will still play the game, they just want tell you that they won't because they feel like they have to be apart of a conversation,. If the dude was a different race no one would have a problem just like the movies, i can see Asians being mad , but others kill me with the history of doing the exact same
People were upset about DragonBall and the Last Samurai. What are you talking about? And no this has nothing to do with Yasuke being black but the way they did this altogether was really bad
Yep. They only care because he's black.
Was thinking the same thing
@@MrFree2BeMe1 Because selective outrage as usual.
Assassin's creed 2 was used to teach history at my high school.
The Japanese government is starting to probe the issue.
From what I saw online, the amount of negative criticism for this game has been MASSIVE, all across the board. Not just from Japanese people. But anyone who has a good, working knowledge of Japanese history, culture, and just some good, old-fashioned, deductive reasoning.
Whose brilliant idea was behind the idea of a game set in Japan with the main character not being Japanese. Just make the character Japanese.
I thought the main character was the Japanese kunoichi? Are we forgetting she exists?
This is just bad politics at play. They knew exactly what they were doing and what kind of uproar they would kick up. That's exactly why they did it. Now they want to start calling everybody, including the Japanese themselves, bigots for not liking the game.
They're not apologizing and they never will.
wow people really hate black, nobody would have cared if he was pale we would of played it like we played nioh we watched tom cruise be the last samurai glad wesley snipes didnt get that role yall would of really went insane
As a wesley snipes fan i would happily watch a last samurai film with him as lead role 👊
Damn, its a game. Game's are like comedians. There fun and you cant take them seriously. Eaither you like it or you don't. No need to look to deep into it.
God forbid they put a black dude in a game. Samura Shamploo is one of the greatest anime's ever.
@@SleepyNightOwl If something is set in the Sengoku era and it's a fantasy story then by definition it is no longer authentic to history.

How are you supposed to be stealth if you're the only black guy Japan? Not even a racist joke but an actual question
I think Ubisoft made the female MC the stealth character because of that. Yasuke is more combat oriented.
stealth is to not be seen I’m confused are you slow 😂😂😂
