This was a lifesaver. I had 3 days to learn this song to play an acoustic version at a friends Birthday. All the other videos out there used a straight E chord rather than the modal E you use. Also, your instruction on getting this picking pattern down was better than any other. Thanks. I'll post the version I finally come up with once I'm done.
Always found the feel in this song elusive. Came across this video whilst trying to figure out how he did it myself. Great lesson, but I actually think it's fingerpicked, not flat picked. I was also having issues trying to sing and flat picking the part, then it got easy when I dropped the pick and started finger picking the figure. Without trying, palm muted fingerpicking also yielded just the right amount of "accidental" ringing notes (typically on the higher strings), and especially on a telecaster due to the shape of the bridge hardware (and of course Springsteen plays a tele). You just angle your hand a bit so every now and again a sneaky high note rings a bit. As for the tone, I believe that "chorus" effect you were trying to figure out was actually just the tone of a small wood room underneath. Small rooms generally lend a bit of chorus effect. Then I think there's some spring reverb from his amp and a studio plate on top of it. Once I dialed all that in, it sounded spot on fingerpicking, but not quite the feel with a pick.
You can play this with a standard E, but using an E5 allows you to pick the top 4 strings and then just move that pattern down one string for the rest of the chords (with standard E, you have to skip to the open B string). He mentions the E5 fretting at 6:54, 0224xx. I find the fingering he uses to be the easiest; this is shown at the beginning of the video as index (1st) finger holding down the 2 strings on the 2nd fret (as a mini-bar) and the ring (3rd) finger holding down the 4.
I really don't think that this is "very simple" - as it needs to be quite precise over the whole song. Sometimes really the easy looking things are the most challenging ones, at least for me. Well done, Justin!
Just caught this great lesson. Been playing this in D since for ever. Never played with the track D just suited my voice. Keep it up Justin. Great teacher
I like your combination of proper technique/accuracy and playing with feel / training your ear. Playing by ear is so much more fun, but technique is what brings your playing to the next level....at least for me. Thanks for the great tutorials!...........................You need to have that bad C#m looked at before it becomes serious!
Thanks, Justin! You nailed. Perhaps more of a distinctive sound you're looking for comes from Tele ;) Springsteen songs are finally piling up on your channel/website. Keep them coming! I know I might be boring with following comment, but please consider Thunder Road as your next one :))
The best turorial I've seen of this song. Spectacular. Thank you for your effort. I've seen this version of this song Mumford & Sons - 'I'm On Fire' (Cover) | 3FM Mega Exclusive | 3FM Live. It would be great if you could give us the chords you use! Thanks again!
Unless I missed something, you showed a standard E major in the initial instruction when the actual chord is an E5 with the little finger fretting the 4th. fret of the 3rd. string? The picking pattern doesn't work unless you form the chord as you did during the performance intro. Didn't trip me up, but beginners might get confused.
hrjw Nothing wrong with this guitarsound from a strat ! Besides that he has a tele but it is giving hum- noise problems in his studio (electro static. interference)

You never did a break down on that alternate voicing you were doing on E chord. You used a straight cowboy position on the strumming but were not using that on the picking. It looked like a variation of an E power chord but obviously there were additional notes in there. I couldn't quite pick them up visually, I kept waiting for you to 'splain it but it never happened. Other than that, great video as you always do. You captured the heart of that tune for sure.
Great cover and lesson. Tell me why an amazing guitarist and vocalist like you just do covers of everyone else's work. I'm guessing it takes a special talent to write a great song and I'm not saying you haven't that kind of talent or have you? If so, post your song who knows it might turn out a hit.
Kind words ... Justin has writen / co-written many songs. One was the B-side of a big hit single for Katie Melua. Justin released a solo album of all original material. He has also released several albums with 'band' We Came As Strangers. Hi Maybe its just me ..but there was no info on the chord shape where the picking starts ..not the regular E but the other chord you use ...great lessons by the way
Does it really matter if I don't use the D-D-U-D-U-D-U when I find D-D-D-U-U-D-U easier? I have a hell of a time resisting going back to the A string for the fourth note after the 'Up' on the D.
Hi guys. He sets it out around 7.00 as an E5 chord played 0,2,2,4, so low E string open, A string fret 2, D string fret 2, G string fret 4 (the B you mention). "The thinnest 4 strings" is a slip of the tongue I think, it's clearly the thickest 4. Hope that helps.
Great lesson Justin, but why this kind of Songs there are so manny lessons on this.. exact same way.. Do a turorial on a song like: Jon-Allen- In your light, :-) please.

You've got the right voice for this song! Great singing, indeed!

Really a fantastic lesson. It shows you exactly what you need to know and matches the original song perfectly.
I've been waiting for this song. Thank you Justin!
Cheers!
Play the whole song Justin. I'd live to see that.
Finally, a spot on cover and lesson! Well done mate…awesome!!!!
I really don't think that this is "very simple" - as it needs to be quite precise over the whole song. Sometimes really the easy looking things are the most challenging ones, at least for me. Well done, Justin!
There's a big difference between "simple" and "easy", isn't there? Simple things can be very difficult to do.
Jarda, that’s a great point!! Simple doesn’t always mean easy.
Loop pedal
Thank you Justin, you take all the misery out of it - how can I not subscribe??
A great song, perfect for driving at night or early morn' on some American Hwys somewhere out West (or just at home with a beer!) :D
It's got a driving thing about it eh!
Thanks for providing all this awesome knowledge Justin. Been a follower of yours for quite a few years.
Just caught this great lesson. Been playing this in D since for ever. Never played with the track D just suited my voice.
Keep it up Justin. Great teacher
Michael you mean tuned down to D ? I play this song tuned a whole step down, I actually think original tuned whole step down also ...
My favourite Springsteen song.

no regrets to follow Justin... Springsteen The Boss!!! thanks for tutorial :)
I’ve been doing this in a muted Travis style finger picking on acoustic guitar. The Break was where I was having problems with the timing.... thanks.

Deceptively challenging to play this correctly , it is cool. It probably is an echoplex it wobbles like one
Nice work! Hou have a striking resemblance to Norm Macdonald! Cheers
Awesome lesson! Like always 👍

Hi Justin. Love your lessons. Thanks. Sure you have been asked many times, but why do you have the strap around the nut?

nice voice
What pedal are you using?
Telecaster: neck pickup, palm mute and a delay sounds very close
When you’re picking the first in pattern I’m hearing the note ‘b’ . Where is it coming from?
Justin, what is a good strumming pattern for a song like Up The Junction by Squeeze? Thanks.
U r awesome

hi Justin, can you do heaven and hell by black Sabbath?
loved it as always. thx mate. if you're interested I don't think there's many tutorials of 'This Hardland' out there ;-)
Does it really matter if I don't use the D-D-U-D-U-D-U when I find D-D-D-U-U-D-U easier? I have a hell of a time resisting going back to the A string for the fourth note after the 'Up' on the D.
I believe he tunes the guitar down an entire step.
As usual, well done, sir.
I got a great voice ;-)
Why does the note on the g string sounds like b when you play the e chord.
Yeah, during the E chord, it sounds like he's playing a B on the 4th string with his pinky. But he never addresses this in the tutorial...
Hi - it would be so much easier if you showed the tab as you were playing . Thank you .
You are Norm Macdonalds doppelgänger! Crazy resemblance!
Great lesson Justin, but why this kind of Songs there are so manny lessons on this.. exact same way.. Do a turorial on a song like: Jon-Allen- In your light, :-) please.
"I got a bad C sharp minor" ... " I can take you C sharp minor" 😂
"I'm on E", the rave version
Justin, your tutorials are brilliant!
