    Great video Myke. Very healthy discussion about feminism. When I met my girlfriend three years ago she turned me onto feminist theory and it completely changed the way I look at the world. I agree that it's very easy to get caught up in gender politics (at least I think that's what you were getting at with your story about the drummer) and start applying the feminist critique to everything you encounter. I think a healthy approach to feminism is to be critical of not only patriarchal systems but also of yourself and how and when you apply a feminist critique.
    To be honest, I had no idea what your stance on feminism was before watching this video and I was curious how you would approach the topic seeing as you're a hip-hop fan. I have the same issue it seems - I love hip-hop, but there's some instances of misogyny in rap music that is unbearable (good example - almost the entirety of The Chronic 2001. I WISH I could listen to "Xxplosive" and not feel sickened).
    And lastly, big ups on the Slint mention. Spiderland is one of my all-time favorites.

    Loved the Moz shirt and the talk about feminism. As a guy, I usually call myself a feminist by definition, because that's true and it can prove it. Anything more than that would be complicated. I'm not sure what age you stopped calling yourself a feminist, but I'm 17.

    Pissed Jeans have a song that basically focuses on that feminist issue of male mindsets (or even programming?), especially in music. 'Male Gaze', well worth a listen.

      @mykectown  10 лет назад

      I'm not a fan of Pissed Jeans at all, but I did go ahead and listen to (most of) that song. I read all the lyrics though. Pretty good. I definitely get the aspect of how we treat women in music. Judging before they make a sound. Instant dismissal or over exaggerating skill in order to make ourselves feel better about ourselves.

    When I worked for my school newspaper last semester at Allapachian State, I asked my EIC if I could cover Moogfest and he obliged. I already had tickets and was going to attend before I decided to cover it, but I applied for a Press Pass on a whim and I was amazed at how easy it was to get one. All the people at Moogfest asked was that my EIC send them an e-mail detailing that I was not going to scam them for a free ticket, and I had to send them a link to the subsequent articles I wrote that were associated with Moogfest. It is not hard at all. Seeing as your page and DEHH are credible and have a large following, I don't see why you would have trouble getting a pass. They won't cover for travel and board, though. That's the kicker haha

    Myke C-Town definitely agree with your statements on feminism, misogyny, etc. Have you heard about or read about recent statements that we live in a rape culture? That's something that I can't fully agree with. I think it's a bit of an extreme statement, along with statements claiming that "we are all guilty of (fill in the blank)". I don't appreciate my entire gender being lumped in with the negative actions of the few. Just my opinion.

    • @mykectown
      @mykectown  10 лет назад +8

      Yes, I've heard about the idea that we live in a rape culture. I wouldn't call those recent statements. That's been around for years. I also wouldn't say it's all that extreme either. We live in a VERY patriarchal society where rape is often times ignored or excused. I mean, when you break it down into the criteria that it takes to be considered a rape culture, we come very close. Victim blaming is constant. So is the trivialization of rape itself (look at all the rappers who make jokes out of rape).
      You saying how you don't appreciate your entire gender being lumped in with the negative actions of a few is precisely the problem. You need to stop making these situations about you. When a woman describes the issues that affect her, men instantly wanna get defensive. "I don't do that! I've never done that!" etc. That's not the issue. You are one person. The point is this stuff happens. And it happens on a regular basis. Just because you're not racist are you going to say that racism doesn't exist? Even if it's not prevalent in your community are you going to say it's absent in all or even most other communities?
      And if you're going to get up in arms about the male gender being lumped together in a negative way, do you do that when it comes to the female gender? Do you stand up when your friends say "women are whores?"

  • @ShockValue42
    @ShockValue42 10 лет назад +4

    I feel like calling yourself a feminist, whether male or female, is a misnomer unless you actively support the feminist cause, I feel like most people who identify as being a feminist are more of the "feminist sympathizer" types you mentioned (although that really DOES sound negative) who just agree and passively support the feminist movement. Not saying that theres anything wrong with passive support, but passively agreeing with feminism and calling myself a feminist sounds like the equivalent of me passively supporting animal rights and calling myself an animal rights activist. I just think terms like feminist should be reserved for people working hard to be proactive to the cause.

    • @conflict1904
      @conflict1904 10 лет назад +1

      StokeCityFC44 Nope , "ear for melody" is not even something you can point out on Keef..'cause if so , than a lot of people could be rappers , if you present them the beat like Young Chop did to Keef , they can tell which ones bang the most. A rapper/mc isn't evaluated by his "ear for melody" , it's by his vocal ability , lyrical ability. He got nothing oing on.Put him with trinidad james , migos and others on the same spot. Anyway , if you like it..go ahead.

    @Neurozumim 10 лет назад

    I'm feminist to the point where if I'm at some art or music festival, and there's just men artists around, I'm going to think "ok, what's wrong here?". Also, somewhere I think I prefer women voice in vocal music. In hip hop, when Roxanne Shanté came up, it wasn't a question of wrether she was equal to her peers, it was just that I liked the voice. But hip hop is a lot centered about "dude" issues that I don't feel concerned about, so I'm mostly listening to hip hop that's underground or if the music's worth it (I admit I like Tyler The Creator though he can be a goof.. I guess I'm a cliché hipster). I think the new Minaj track is a fine piece of pop. But my no.2 album last year was Kelela's Cut 4 Me tape, and that's R&B, but over hip hop tracks, and I don't find a lot of hip hop with that dark vibe (like the track Enemy). I want stuff like that, where is it?

    • @mykectown
      @mykectown  10 лет назад

      Hey. Out of curiosity are you male or female? Just trying to gauge the voice, here. But I agree about hip hop being centered around male issues. It's always kinda been like that. Especially the machismo aspect of it. It all revolves around men, their issues, their ideas and their perspectives. It's a struggle for women to break into that scene. And when they do, it's almost like they have to discuss these same male issues because when they discuss female issues, men can't connect and they instantly become disinterested.
      Never heard of Kelela. I'll have to look her up.

    • @Neurozumim
      @Neurozumim 10 лет назад

      Myke C-Town Thanks for reading. I'm just yet another dude. Kelela is recently featured on a single/video by Bok Bok that left me cold, so it's rather important the producer when you sing (or rap) over other people's music. Her Cut 4 Me tape was great, but the choice of producers played a big role for me.

    I guess i could be called a feminist, but i really don´t like to consider myself one. It´s not really the extremists that give the movement a bad image, but more so because i am for equal treadment of both women and men. I understand that the term comes from the fact that women have been systematically oppressed, so to reach the goal of equal rights you must fight for the womens right first. But nowadays, there are gender expectations on both sides, i feel even more for men, because the mentality of the emanzipated independent woman is widely accepted, but most man still have the strong identification with the masculine stereotype, and like you said "feminine" or "gay" is an insult, even if most people have nothing against homosexuals, they think it´s insulting to a hetero that he is anything but a masculine testosterone bomb. How about an equalist movement?
