Agree that OP’s friend did exaggerate the issue, but I also feel like OP could have done a better job at handling the situation. Instead of going for the girl first and then having the friend find out about it, he could’ve had a discussion with his friend before he continued talking to the girl and hopefully come to a mutual understanding first.

your mindset towards finance is really important, especially when you're living in a practical society. if not, in future there may be arguments about how you two would like to spend money, on your kids, paying bills and all that. and perhaps op's love language is receiving gifts. it really depends on how you see things.
