They started getting repowered in circa 2001-2002.

@@dodge1515 actually believe it or not the repowering process began in late 1998. I had a mechanic who actually repowered them tell me

Looking at a roster I have from April 1999, 8222 was assigned to West Side Depot, not Hudson Pier. It appears this bus was 8232 which was assigned to Hudson Pier at the time. This bus would have been a Lower East Side-bound M14A as the M14A terminated at Chelsea Piers whereas the M14D terminated at Abingdon Square.
